    Thanks for watching. Please let us know what you think about the pace and style of the video. E.g. music, yes or no, length of the video, areas where we have tripled the speed, and if you prefer us to start the video from a raw cleft or a handled/pressed cleft as we've done previously.
    Also, contact your local cricket store and ask them to stock Fantail. We’re on the lookout for new stockists around the world.

    Nice video explaining the bat making. The pace is good, but if you could the dimensions of the cleft (like 3ft long x4 inches wide x 2inches thick etc.,) before the start and how much is taken off at the end it will be great. Best wishes from Canada

    Awesome video mate very therapeutic. Great to see you back as well. Agree with some of the comments, just a few descriptions of tools used at certain parts, how and why you use them ect, what you look for in a cleft before you start and how you grade them. Only like 4-5 quick chats sprinkled in. It's really great as is though!

    Awesome video, thank you so much for showing your bat making process in such detail! I have a couple of questions about the oiling you showed if you don’t mind me asking.
    When you oiled the face before putting the bat on your knocking in machine - how long did you leave the oil to dry/ cure… or did you knock it in whilst the oil was fresh? And the same goes for before adding the scuff sheet... How much curing time do you allow there please? Many thanks, Phil

    • @FantailCricket
      @FantailCricket  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bats are oiled overnight before knocking. After knocking and a light sand, a small amount of oil is applied to the face, and the facing is applied immediately.

Loving the chilled out wonky beats, kinda Fat Freddie meets Mr Scruff! 😁 only just clicked that you’re a leftie too! That drawknife is so sharp! Love it. Wonder whether the wood glue will be strong enough to withstand a solid hit from the toe? Do bats these days use glue or epoxy, and are the surfaces of the two bits of wood ‘keyed’ before glue up? Here’s hoping, as it’s a piece of art

    • @gionncaomhinmorpheagh4791
      @gionncaomhinmorpheagh4791 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear @charlieNumbers: just so that you don't get confused mo chara, that "drawknife" you mention is commonly known as a "spokeshave" in other English-speaking countries (obviously apart from yours - if you're a Septic [Septic tank - Yank]). It's what it was invented for. Y'know, shaving down spokes (of wooden wheels)?

    Fascinating. Couple of questions. What's the shaving tool at 7m 30s? Also, how does the antiscuff stick to the blade after oil has been applied? I thought that would affect it.
    Lastly, wheneber I used to put antiscuff on my bats I would bend it round the edge too. Here I noticed you cut it and then put fibre tape to cover the edges. Howcome the antiscuff isn't folded round the edge and then fibre tape added on top for extra edge protection?

    Is the maximum limits for the bat measured from the toe to the top of the handle? Not specifically on the blade only?

    • @FantailCricket
      @FantailCricket  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We've only used English and Kashmir willow. I want to make a youtube series where we make bats out of different wood types and compare them to the English willow bats we make. We'd probably start with timber used for baseball bats, e.g. birch, ash and maple.

    • @aetd106
      @aetd106 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FantailCricket that would actually be really interesting - baseball bats seem a lot more fragile too and frequently shatter in game (even on "checked" swings without ball contact) despite a tubular shape supposedly being stronger. I wonder how something like that would fare for cricket.

    Considering you use the same jig for the splice cuts, is there any reason you don't have a batch of precut handles to save time? The only reasons I could think off is to avoid handles srinking or expanding in chanigng climate or to make sure the cut is the same. But I imagine your workshop is relatively climate controlled, the handels are used up quick enough and you have a consistent jig so the cut angle will always be identical

    • @FantailCricket
      @FantailCricket  ปีที่แล้ว

      We always do handles in batches of 10+, and because it only takes 30 seconds to change the jigs, we do not need to pre-cut handles when the lengths are adjusted for each bat. We only did this one individually for the video.

    Where do you get your willow and which type is the best? I note that English Willow trees grown specifically for cricket bats (Salix alba var. caerulea) are all cloned females. Whereas Kashmir Willow trees - although genetically the same species, are predominantly male. About 2% of willow tress are Bigender.
