  • This is the perfect time to feed your lawn and protect it from weeds and pests. The 4 step program helps with weed prevention, pest control and gives your lawn a rich, deep green look. Watch this video with Ken Zawicki, General Manager for Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the Scotts® 4-step program and just how easy it is to do it yourself. The program is designed to get your lawn started in the spring, prevent weeds and pests throughout the summer and to rejuvenate your lawn in the fall and give it the nutrients it needs to get through winter.

    Just a friendly FYI...The green bag needs to be applied between June and August closer to Independence Day not September. I'm assuming you just got the months mix up.

    Is Step 4 safe for pets? I thought it was just basic fertilizer.

    3/4/2020 I just put down Scott’s Turf Builder plus Halts yesterday. How long should I wait to put down Scott’s Max Green? We live near Kansas City, turf temp is 56 degrees.

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both Turf Builder plus Halts and Max Green include a full lawn feeding. Scotts recommends 6-8 weeks between feedings to avoid overgrowth.

    I just bought the 4 step. I live in central Wisconsin where Sunday and Monday we are expected to get 5-10 inches of snow. NoI'm not kidding. So when should I put the first step down ?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The melt water has a chance to wash away the product. Wait until the snow has melted and the soil is dry enough to walk on. If the lawn has not started to grow yet, wait until the grass has noticeably grown.

    Question, I just finished putting down step 1 for crab grass and fertilizer. So i noticed you said step 1 grass seed , you just spread that over the whole lawn - the grass seed over existing grass?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you've recently overseeded your lawn or if you plant to overseed or re-seed you should be using Step 1 for Seeding, not regular Step . Step 1 for Seeding will prevent crabgrass but allow the grass seed to germinate.

    Does this 4 step program work in Florida with the grass we have here?

      Most fertilizers have a southern version for the different grass types. Our video features the northern versions. Please see you local independent garden center for more information!

    I live in Manassas, VA and want to start lawn care now. I have lot of crabgrass. what step should i take? Thanks.

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crabgrass is an annual and will die over the winter. It will (and already has) put down a lot of seeds that will sprout next spring. The best thing to do with the crabgrass now is to ignore it, and use a fertilizer with a crabgrass preventer in the spring. If you are planning on sowing grass seed, use a crabgrass preventer for seeding (such as Scotts Step 1 for Seeding), since regular crabgrass preventers will also kill grass seed.
      The main care now is to fertilize with a high potassium fall fertilizer. If you have broadleaf (non-grassy) weeds, spot treat those with a lawn weed killer such as Weed Beater. This will not harm the grass as it kills the non-grassy weeds.

      Thanks for the reply. So here is my plane, spray ORTHO WEED B GON and wait 4 weeks. Then spread TURF BUILDER FALL GRASS MIX SEED WATER SMART with TURF BUILDER LAWN SOIL. Let me know if it is going to work. Thanks.

      Yes, This should work!

      strangely, nothing happened to the wild violet with ORTHO WEED B GON. any suggestion. :)

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weed killers work best when weeds are actively growing, and wild violet is most vigorous in the spring. There are other products made with a different ingredient that works better on tough weeds, including wild violet, but it will take up to two weeks before you see any signs that they are working. One of these is Ortho Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer, which has wild violet on the label. It is available as a concentrate only, and please remember it takes about two weeks before this product will show visible results since it targets the root system.

    When you say Step 1 goes down now" When is now?

      Late March into early April, typically right around Easter, is a great time!

    Is it safe to overseed between steps 3 and 4 or will they kill my seed and new grass?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is safe to overseed. There is no weed killer in Step 3 or Step 4.

    whats the diffrence between this program and turf builder program?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essentially none, maybe a percent or two difference up or down on the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

    Why can't I just use Scotts triple action in mid to late February?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      February is too early to apply fertilizer or weed control in Ohio. The ground is still frozen so the product is likely to wash away during a warm spell. The weed preventer in Triple Action lasts for 3 months maximum so it will be wearing off just as crabgrass begins to sprout. It is fine to use Triple Action in mid-April if conditions are right, but you are still getting one feeding instead of two from Step 1 and Step 2.

    Step 2 completely destroyed my lawn after following exact instructs. Scotts did refun for the product....but that does nothing to fix my lawn which will cost $$$$.
    Thanks Scotts😢
    AND the times you say to apply each is completely different from what instructions say.
    Bad advice
