I can't help but feel sad for Marcello. He didn't ask to have a douchebag for a father, or for his mother to pass away leaving him alone. There was a lot of anger in his speech, it was probably held in for a long time. Angelo was an emotional outlet for it but it wasn't enough for him. This guy needed closure he never got from his father, so he just took it out on the world.
I'm glad with the 3ds release we get, albeit optional, a new dungeon where he teams up with us though it still leaves things pretty up in the air, it gives room for them to repair their relationship.
When I watched my brother replay this game I was very surprised by how genuinely well-written Marcello was. He strikes the perfect balance of being an evil maniac, yet he also comes off as completely sympathetic.
Reminder, of everyone who held this sceptre, only Marcello actually kept control and used it for his own will. When the dark vines tried to possess him, he stabbed his own arm. And through shear will forced the darkness, that even possessed Jessica, to obey him. Let that sink in, he actually did the impossible and controlled the soul of pure evil itself. If only he wasn't such a dick then he could have saved the world.
Part of me feels bad for him. I played this game, and for the most part? He was right in his speech. The Goddess doesn’t even really exist, only a slightly strong bird, none of the nobles do anything, many of them screwing up anyway. More than anything, it’s obvious that he actually did want what was best for the common man, he had a god awful father that treated him and his mom like crap. He is not a bad guy, just an extremist who was just unlucky.
@@apollyonnoctis1291 Mhmm so much so. He actually saw what was wrong in this world and was going to fix it. But his fixing involved violent bloody conquest and an empire under his heel
Well as much as that would be cool if it was the other way around sadly it was his anger and his past that gave him the ability to control the evil if he didn't have that terrible past he most likely have been just like Jessica
In a way his actions did save the world as him resisting the possession meant that Rhapthorne couldn’t free his body earlier, as had he been able to Rhapthorne would have successfully ruled the world for at least a month and caused even more death and destruction.
Notice how Marcello remains Marcello even in possession of Rapthorne's sceptre. No "evil Marcello", because he is so evil to the core naturally anyway... Pitiful man.
Not quite. Note at 4:06 and especially 4:52 that Rapthorne's voice is leaking from Marcello's despite his strong will. It's a testament to Marcello's strength but it also outlines his arrogance, even if the heroes didn't manage to defeat him, Rapthorne would have possessed him later.
Fun fact, the localization is not consistent. For example, when the party fought Rhapthorne to defend David, the Japanese bestiary entry is for "cursed Jessica", while the fight at the Lord High Priest's is against simply "Leopold". Neither was denoted as evil in the untranslated game. It really was only because he wasn't fully taken over by the Sceptre, though. He was still in control when he fought the Hero and co., however much the Lord of Darkness may have been influencing, or merely overlapping with, his personality.
6:21 - that had to be an interesting prayer... _"Hey Goddess, I know I said you were just as useless as the Aristocracy and therefore unfit for worship literally a few minutes ago, but can you back me up here for a sec? 'Kay Thanks, Amen!"_
What you have in quotes, especially the last part, seems to me like something that would have been said in a parody like Nigga Turtles. :D Maybe Marcello thought of himself as the god he was praying to though, so it could be considered consistent in that way.
I hope him and Angelo reconcile or at least talk. Marcello doesn't deserve a cruddy dad but he would have talked to Angelo, since he is the only family he got anyway
A lot of what Marcello says here clearly comes from a good heart but he lived too dark of a life to be able to see it through. Perhaps he knew Angelo would but his spite wouldn’t allow him to accept it willingly
@@lindayoung8304 It certainly is. In this game, the way I did it was using the coin flip crit moves. It's hell man. Oh well, good thing Timbrel of Tension breaks the game.
I guess after the seven sages defeated Rhapthorne, they didn't want to alarm people. I mean, wouldn't you have a hard time enjoying peace if you saw this outside your window everyday?

@Jrpg Fanatic no it doesn't.
Angelo gaining a level from this fight is so perfect.

@Mario87456 That is actually a really good point, I hadn’t thought about
4:06 Only years later do I notice Rhapthorne's voice start to crawl into Marcelo's voice here with "intruders shall."
same for me! i just found out today after many years!

@@arielhachinto3064 It doesn't change the fact that he is really naturally wicked.

Marcello was such a douche that they didn't even need to put the word "evil" like they did with Sir Leo and Jessica. XDDD
He was not controlled at this point.
There was no "evil" because he wasn't controlled
I know that guys. 🤣🤣 He was always a douche, to be honest, I didn’t notice a change when he was “controlled” 💁🏽♀️
He is already evil
This game had amazing writing and voice acting. They need to make an HD rerelease for PC

I found this fight really easy. Mostly because I prepared a bunch of good gear, was in my mid 50's, and had timbrel of tension.

What is a king to a god what is a king to non believer tfs
The one thing I never got, why was the giant Goddess statue the place of Rhapthorne's body? Why would you do that!?
