Hey Monica! It really depends on the type of learner you are.
I did my entire Masters and CFP study with online instructors because it was convenient. I would say that if you can find a local program that the face-to-face is hard to beat!

Hi Dominique- I am so happy that I found your channel!! I'm an older career changer and I'm finishing up my education requirement now. I have plans to take the CFP exam early 2021. I have been working for an RIA for over 30 years the last 8 I have been a Para-planner. Will any of this experience count toward the required (4,000 or 6,000) hours? Thank you in advance.

Hi Dom, thanks for the insights. I graduated from a British university where the bachelor's degree is three years instead of four. How can that be reconciled and will the CFP accept my credentials?

Lesley Rowland I’d find a mentor first. If you want the experience to count it will need to be supervised if you want to become a CFP. Have you considered joining my Facebook group?

Hey Dominique I am a 30 yr old professional working in IT thinking about making a change to the financial sector. After watching your video i must admit, it was a little off putting to see the experience requirement. I'm still paying student loans off unfortunately and will have to work fulltime to support myself as i complete the CFP course work. Given that I can't quit my full time job while pursuing this dream, do you have any recommendations on how someone working 40 hr weeks might be able to get a head start on that 6,000 hr experience requirement? Thank you!
Matt Weaver definitely not the easiest thing to do part-time. I'd say you'd probably have to switch jobs as I don't think you'd want to wait all that time if you did it part time. What's keeping you from just leaving IT?

@@DominiqueHendersonCFP I currently make $80k a year in IT and still owe $50k on my student loans so it doesn't sound like the wisest financial decision to pursue the CFP route until i am debt free or at least close to it. I am trying set it up so that i can pay the student loans off and be debt free by 2023 and study for the CFP but was wondering if there were avenues that offered CFP experience hours while i continue to pay down that debt.
Ahhh lifestyle changes. Seek volunteer and internship opportunities then while you work your plan.

Hey brother. No degree and an agent for a year with a BD and just passed my 66 to be an IAR. Financially is it worth it to pursue getting my degree 1st then getting my CFP? Got little ones at home and don't wanna tie myself up in work, school, study, and taking time away from them since they're young. Is the pay that much more?

I just graduated with my bachelor's in finance and would like to become a CFP. I've applied for a few apprenticeships that will sponsor my licenses. If I don't get them, should I get my SIE and education requirements done on my own?
The SIE is a good indicator to potential employers that you're serious.

If you want to trade people account for them ? Ex. Trading account EMini , S&P , Dow . I been trading for 5 years but i want to get some kind of paper or certificate that says I am authorized to trade . Don’t want CFtC coming after me for Wire Fraud cause people sending me money to trade for them . And advice would be great . Thank you

Did your previous work experience count towards your CFP designation, or did you essentially work at a firm and gain that financial planner specific experience?
Gennette Darty great question...yes. by the time I pursued the designation I had been working long enough to satisfy the experience req.

I'm thinking about getting my CFP as I'm interested in doing the work you're currently doing with your clients. Do you know anyone that has both of these designations that I could talk to?
Also, I'm not sure if you have a video already talking about this, but can you talk about how you got your start specifically with financial planning. I saw the video on becoming a financial advisor, but it didn't really discuss how you gained experience or accumulated well-rounded knowledge with knowing retirement, estate, or tax planning to the point that you were able to establish your own book of business.

Yes
I did the cfp course at Sheridan College over 10 years ago, unfortunately I didn't pass the provincial exam. Afterwards I got myself a job at the bank a worked my ass off for another 10 years. Now I'm thinking to go back and get my cfp done. I'm hoping I can get some exemption on the courses I previously did.

No. 4000 hrs or 6000 hrs of experience to use the CFP marks.

No it doesn’t have to be business related
If I want to transition into financial planning, what order do you think is more beneficial?
Experience first, then take the exams?
Or Take the exam, then accumulate your experience?

Take coursework ( to prepare for exam) while interning or working for someone and getting experience.

Nothing before 10 years prior to taking exam or 5 years after completing.

Being a Financial professional, this is the most obvious reflection of protecting important information from people. This industry needs to be burned to the ground. Coming from a series 65 holder and in the industry for 17 years. This is utter bullshit in terms of hoops to jump through.
You didn’t know CFP existed after 17 years?
