I was a cigarette smoker for 16 years. I tried numerous times and never could stay off for more than a month or two. I swapped cigarettes for cycling in April of 2019 and haven't looked back. I average about 200 miles a week now. Not only that, but the ungodly amount of endorphins I get from this has kept the depression quiet and at bay for a year-and-a-half. My credit being in the best shape of my life fully to this crazy gravel bike of mine

@@MJHarfoush-photoart carrot and stick my friend. When the nicotine withdrawals got too much, I would pedal faster, pedal harder. Seriously. Cold turkey and an insane amount of riding. I wound up drinking more water which I think helped flush everything out quicker. And every month I didn't smoke I made sure to spend the amount of money I would have on cigarettes on more cycling gear. You can do this my friend, and it's worth it
Cycling is wonderful therapy for depression and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder ), I suffer from both and cycling has helped me through some very dark times. Thanks for GCN as well as it always makes me smile. Cheers team.
I'm 52 years old and I restarted cycling 4 years ago after 30 years of pause....I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2....I had 113kg.....after 20000km (in 4 years, strava) now days I'm 77kg, no insulin and living a normal life with my bikes, my chocolate and other "sweet" and slightly crazy moments of this sport....
At the age of a 66 year old granny, I've just discovered cycling. I've not got a fancy bike, more of a mountain type one as I'm not prepared to go on the roads just yet. Cycling in Milton Keynes is encouraged and there are miles of redways to go on. I'm getting fitter by the day.
I am in Washington State, USA where we have bike lanes most places-county, city country roads. We also have what is called ‘free right turns.’ One stops at a light or stop sign then can turn right without regard to whether the light is red. The bike line is nearest the curb, road edge. The number of times I was almost hit are too many to report. The driver sitting besides me at the light and the driver turns into me whether red or green light. So we encourage cycling but it is dangerous out here. And I’m talking danger from the well intentioned driver not the crazies.
I had been hit by a car years ago, on my way to the Tour de Palm Springs cycling event. And it really messed up my back. My doctor had asked me to keep riding my road bike as good stretching of my back to keep me pain free. It worked for me, when I dont ride, I can feel slight pressure in my lower back that keeps me cautious
My sport medicine Dr. prescribed biking for me since I have arthritic knees. He stated that biking helps to increase lubricating fluids and decrease inflammation in the knee joints.
Actually it's been shown running has a protective effect on knees, contrary to the stereotype. Running with bad form can definitely be hard on the knees tho
@@Stardog32 Moderate impacts strengthen the knees according to my information. I've heard contrary stuff about marathon runners though. Maybe not every body can deal with long distance running, especially with bad form and on tarmac.
I realized that commuting helps slow me down.. In a car I generally want to get from A to B as quick as possible and get more annoyed at bad drivers. While taking the same routes on my bike, I quickly adopt the mentality, "I'll get there when I get there". Generally happier when I bike commute.. Just wish there were more and safer options.
Actually sports has saved my life many times from depression. Cycling when I was 14. Football. Tennis. Windsurfing. Running. And now back to serious cycling again. Gets those endorphins flowing and in style! Also I think the fixing of bikes, building, maintaining, and even buying activates various parts of the brain. On yer bike. From Toronto.
Well as a GP, I have been "prescribing" cycling (or swimming) as a go to non impact exercise for my patients with obesity and some joints problem. I feel it's common sense to just get people active and have fun at the same time without risking joint injuries.
In 2016, 28 cyclists died in my city. In order to respect their sacrifice and stop that from happening, Government built 283 km of cycling tracks around the city (I mean they tried 280 but can't just leave a 3k stretch at the end somewhere I guess). It went down to 17 in 2017, 13 in 2018 and just 10 in 2019. Considering about 1.5 million people live here, that's a pretty safe city
I am right at the beginning again. I used to be a big cyclist, until I had some serious injury. I lost my confidence. I got a new bike about 20 years ago. Never really got back into it. Still looks new, Needs a clean and some new tires. Now at 55 and very overweight, suffering from depression and many other things, The government timing works well. To make sure my bike is safe, I decided to start gently, I still have all my gear, nothing like these days. Been loving the videos, Makes me want to get out again.
Oh yes! Sports + Nature should be basic prescriptions. I was on an antidepressant for nearly two years. Always dazed, never thought I’d be okay again. But I began hiking and running and have been stable ever since. They totally replaced any medication. We underestimate our bodies and the power of Nature.
I was encouraged to get on a bike by my GP after having heart problems and GCN’s how-to videos made the difference in helping turn a “prescription” into a passion. Two years on and I had been planning to do my first century sportive this summer. But there’s always next year. P.S. Admit it - you did the whole Captain Kirk/Mr Spoke hands on the Perspex screen when the camera wasn’t rolling..
I can personally attest to the benefits of cycling for mental health. "you are one ride away from a good mood" -- Sarah Bentley ❤ My initial (non-expert/pretty novice) thoughts on cycling to replace leg-day (most people are wise enough no to use it as a replacement but rather as a complement) First, Cycling is considerably low-impact (good thing if your knees are suffering), but if they are not, some impact is necessary to promote healthy bones. (such impact provided by running or weight-resistance training) Second, cycling, as far as leg muscles are concerned, is endurance oriented. Whereas, curls, squats, etc promote strength and muscle gain (in combination, leg and core work in the gym really improved my cycling performance. Last, the exception to my second point could be, sprinting exercises and repeated climbs have, for me, contributed to more leg muscle mass, tone, and less fat. a laid-back spinner, or an uncompromising grinder, we all love to keep moving forward. Stay Safe Out there 😉 Cheers from Syria
I got shouted at by an angry driver who wasn’t happy I was doing the speed limit on my bike. When I pointed this out to him he shouted that he’d been driving longer than I’d been alive, which I reminded him was no proof of competence!

I used indoor cycling after heart surgery (mitral repair) to transform from a state of cardiac failure with poor ventricular function and adverse prognosis to essentially normal heart function and no medications by building progressively over about a year. It started with immediate supervision in a cardiac exercise / rehab ward until we knew I was safe and then was on my own from there. It took about 3 weeks to learn how to train on beta blockers. I don't want to do that again.
Hi, Simone Chiaretta from the Belgium map ride here. Indeed, many people were using Wahoo... it's getting more and more popular. And the ride was delivered to participants optimized for Wahoo devices. And thx for saying my name without butchering like most English speaker do!
If you can't cycle close to the edge of the road, in a straight line, while staying super vigilant at all times of vehicles pulling out, you will probably be involved in an accident one day. On a positive note! the more inexperienced riders that take to the roads, will hopefully make motorists more aware of all cyclists.
I started my athletic life as a track athlete, a sprinter specifically. I've moved on to rowing and cycling. They're both so much more gratifying than distance running

Great for personal health and mental fitness. Also huge benefits to the enviroment. It's a winner and I'm now looking to get a nice MTB XC in the next 12 months. Get out there everyone :)
Hey guys. Great to see you back together. Here in Melbourne we are back in lockdown which is so frustrating. Great to hear cycling being prescribed by GP's. This was trialed in Wales successfully. I am a cardiac rehab rehab nurse and established a heart patient cycling team here in Melbourne for people who had had a heart attack or open heart surgery for people who wanted to get back on their bikes. I am very passionate about this and can talk to you all day about it.
I'm disabled, so for me it's handcycling, but even so the physical and psychological benefits of it speak for themselves. I think Drs being able to prescribe cycling is a wonderful idea and long overdue!
Since March when COVID got real, between working from home and using my bike for local errands, I've only filled my car's tank once and it's the end of July...
In China vehicles can mostly turn right at a traffic light - even if the lights are against them - meaning they can turn into you even when you are going straight on. There are ample cycle lanes ( big enough to drive a truck down) which the cars will use to undercut the traffic on the main road during the rush hour Exits from side roads often cut across the cycle lane and the drivers only look when they are about to head into the main road. ALL of these have happened to me this week....
Having played football (or soccer) over here for a lot time, I promise cycling is way better for my mental considering the number of cards I tended to pick up...
While lying in my hospital bed, being treated for stage iv cancer, I saw an ad for a charity ride for that very hospital. I would not walk again for nearly 10 months, but it was my goal to pull on that "Survivor" jersey and ride at least 10 miles. I rode 100k. The next year I rode 100 miles. Cycling has literally saved my life. I'm still on a payment plan to both my hospital, and my LBS.
I didn't even notice at first you guys were back in the GCN set, so flawless your home production skills have become. Well done everyone keeping the show on the road 👏
We have 114 miles of bike trails/ bike lanes just here in Palm Coast Florida. 5am rides in summer to beat the heat, epic winter rides. We have a dedicated coast to coast trail where you can ride all the way across Florida. Only climbing is crossing a elevated bridge other wise flat as a board.
Wooohooo!!! Welcome to the GCN Show! (I'm in and forever) And great to see both of you side by side, just that glass in between, one side supposed to be blurry! ;)
Don't tell the guys at GMBN that I am now watching GCN now. At 52 and getting back into cycling I found the road and gravel, a lot easier to get rides in through the week ( and LOVING it!)
agree... that is what I did I slowly made my wife into a cyclist :) and now we all go out as a family on bike rides... I have the youngest one on the trailer behind me... fantastic training ! :)
To answer your question about who else could benefit from cycling: People like me. I have fibromyalgia, a degenerating SI joint, and a degenerating L4/L5 disc. I can't walk far without a lot of pain, but I can ride for miles with zero negative effects. I did the MS Ride last year. My quality of life has gone way up, physical and mental health issues have gone way down. And now, my husband and I are buying a bike repair shop. :D
The best learning experience on the road I have had was when I did my motorbike licence after I learned to drive a car. Bringing that in for all motor vehicle licences would solve a lot of problems. Cycling definitely has benefitted me mentally!
If you can you should do what Holly and Phillip do on This Morning for the GCN Show- just socially distance more than you're doing but no screen. Prescribing cycling sounds brilliant!
I mount my lamp on my fork when I have a bar bag in the way. I've also put a second one on the fork. I run a 38 handlebar so if there is already one lamp and a computer in the cockpit and I want a second one, it's got to go on the fork. Tip: a leftover piece of Velox is a brilliant way to keep the silicone mount from weeble wobbling out of place.
I live in South Africa. A few years ago a cyclist was struck by a car driving 100km/h in a 60km/h zone. The car was driven by a cyclist from the same club.
To all the physicians out there, if you're going to prescribe cycling to someone, make sure also prescribe cessation of drinking and cessation of smoking too.
That Orbea prize looks goooooood! Not that I'm trying to sway the judges, but my design is called the "GCN Sunset". I hear that normally assures a win!
absolutely brilliant that the UK government is promoting cycling and it goes without saying that regular exercise is very important in maintaining a healthy weight. Unfortunately though the reason why people are overweight is not only because they are sedentary but also because the diet is poor with too much reliance on convenience foods full of sugar and fat. At the beginning of the year I read a comment where someone said never eat anything for which there is an advert. Well I tried it and took it one step further and I dont eat anything processed factory food at all now ( I know that is easy for me to say when my wife only eats a vegan diet). But I can tell you it really helps.. Without starving my self I have dropped quite a bit in weight and become a better rider....
5:25 problem is people misjudge how fast road cyclist can be. All lerner drivers should try 100m dash between them in the car (manual) and olympic track sprinter on a road bike.
First of all, one of the main reason that the Bronx have the fewest bike lanes, is that we have the hilliest topography. Only Staten Island (Richmond County) comes close. Mahattan's northend which parrellel the south Bronx whic is the west side of Manhattan (New York County) about a quarter of Mahattan's land mast. The other 3/4 is just barely above sea level where most streets are laid out in north to south, east to west flat grids. Brooklyn (Kings County) and Queens are the west emd of the larger Long Island. Their streets are generally flat with very soft rolling hills. The three Boroughs Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island were still farm land at most when forming the greater NYC. The Bronx and Manhattan, had sparse farm land whie calling itself a city but most were narrow over populated community with it;s wider streets filled with trolley tracks and elevated trains. The Bronx the only borough connected to the mainland, when the New Your City Century Bike Ride comes to the Kingsbridge and Riverdale northwest of the Bronx, you can pick out the Islanders, they are the ones walking up our hills with their bikes, half crying. LOL! City trivia, The Bronx and Queens are the only two boroughs that names are same as their counties. ;)
I want to suggest a topic, I am sure you guys can make a nice vido out of it. Road Cycling & Stoicism. We cyclists seem somehow love to endure pain and take on big obstacles as they appear and do not think of how wasted we will be half way up the climb.
Caption: Bernal: "My favourite song to listen to while cycling? Ludacris with 'Move b****, get out the way' . Why? Because it has a catchy tune. No other reason."
I've never been prescribed cycling but I have had it recommended by a nurse. On the flip side he also measured me for made to measure compression stockings, thus exposing me to ridicule whilst I cycle. Btw "lucked out" simply means you've left your keys indoors.
I believe ball room dancing is one of the best cognitive exercises. I was a swimmer which is one of the worst... and since swimmers are not know for being good on their feet, I ride. No, we are not going to talk about those people.
I feel very strongly that the best way to make better automobile drivers is put people on bikes! Growing up on bikes as kids seems like a natural combination. That much is probably a given - or it WAS 40 years ago when I was a kid and before kids were chaufered to and from school and activities on a daily basis. But if an adult rides and understands how to properly ride a bicycle, then this person will be a FAR better driver. Cornering Braking Traction Following distance Yo-yo All of the above are taught and learned inherently on a bicycle. Learning all of the associated dynamics of cycling make for a VERY informed driver. A bicycle also teaches a person to appreciate what a car can do. It's also revealing. I was telling my non-cyclist roommate about my ride home in college. "The downhill return from school..." and he said, "It's NOT downhill!" And I said it sure is! He had no clue that the 2 mile route to campus was indeed slightly uphill. Drivers would NEVER notice this. Even pedestrians won't because of the imperceptible grade. But a cyclist understands that when riding TO school is in cog #3, and riding home is cog #5, you KNOW one way is uphill, and the other is downhill. So bicycles are a public health good on many fronts, not just the health aspect of getting in shape and shedding pounds.
In Brazil there was a bus company that put their drivers to ride a bike while a bus drove passed really close the rider. All in a controlled environment. There were positive results at driver's behaviors. I think that could be mandatory everywhere.
In Queens, NY we were going to have a bike lane from the 59th street bridge all the way down to Jamaica, Queens. Unfortunately, it ends in Rego Park. Businesses complained that the loss of parking spaces would hurt business.
Love to have cycling as a prescription here in the 🇵🇭. Our government officials could use a bit of cycling so they can be more conscious of our transport troubles.

In Sweden I find traffic and professional drivers quite courteous. Often when possible they will even change to the opposite lane giving me a wide berth.

As a distance runner, I use cycling as a cross training method, and I have to say that it is pretty fun, but I still still am sticking with running.
Let’s see you get Jeremy Clarkson on a bike! He needs a two-wheeled education.
Wooohooo!!! Welcome to the GCN Show! (I'm in and forever)
And great to see both of you side by side, just that glass in between, one side supposed to be blurry! ;)
21:30 It's an alternative design to the step-through frame.
Prescribe cycling in the US to anyone buying a dodge truck...
Great to see Si and Dan back in the studio!
Segment Request: video cameras. How to mount, things to shop for, longest battery, trends in policing
We’ll see what we can do :)
i could not stop laughing seeing si overwhelmed by the stool bodges
Don't tell the guys at GMBN that I am now watching GCN now. At 52 and getting back into cycling I found the road and gravel, a lot easier to get rides in through the week ( and LOVING it!)
Been cycling to work, shops and everywhere for the last year. 3 stone lighter and so much healthier. 🤙
Really nice to see you guys back in the studio :).
I think cycling should be prescribed to every cyclists partner. That way they’ll get upgrading from time to time.
agree... that is what I did I slowly made my wife into a cyclist :) and now we all go out as a family on bike rides... I have the youngest one on the trailer behind me... fantastic training ! :)
@@MrSouzy @s.ivers so that is what I need to do.
CAPTION: During a pre breakfast training session, Geraint Thomas fails to make Egan toast.
Caption: Thomas "I've won the Tour de France as well, who said Bernal could take the captaincy"
Just entered the Orbea contest! I think going from a £200 road bike to a £4000 bike would be a huge shock to my system hahaha
I know, which epic everesting can be maked by GTN: cycling stage, running stage, and...... swimming stage upstream like salmon!
That Orbea prize looks goooooood! Not that I'm trying to sway the judges, but my design is called the "GCN Sunset". I hear that normally assures a win!
Absolutely brilliant to see you guys back in the studio together again! 👍🏻👍🏻
You should have a series where you have professional drivers ride with you on public streets!
I have a feeling much of this is directed at a certain Jeremy Clarkson.
what do you mean? Did I miss it?
Caption competition: Bernal: "Everyone knows I'm the leader Geraint, nobody likes a doubting Thomas!"
Caption: "When I said I need to get leaner, I didn't mean this!!"
absolutely brilliant that the UK government is promoting cycling and it goes without saying that regular exercise is very important in maintaining a healthy weight.
Caption competition: give me some Froome
Glad you are back in the studio. The on screen love is back.
LOL! City trivia, The Bronx and Queens are the only two boroughs that names are same as their counties. ;)
Dan and Si are seriously the best pair on TV/yt
Dan was trying to give Si some Corona virus! Hahaha Its so great to have you back together!!!!
Caption Competitions: Lean on G, when you’re not strong, and he’ll be your friend, he’ll help you carry on....
I want to suggest a topic, I am sure you guys can make a nice vido out of it. Road Cycling & Stoicism. We cyclists seem somehow love to endure pain and take on big obstacles as they appear and do not think of how wasted we will be half way up the climb.
I LOVE GCN!!! GCN IS MY CYCLING WORLD!
Caption: Bernal: "My favourite song to listen to while cycling? Ludacris with 'Move b****, get out the way'
Cornering
Braking
Traction
Following distance
Yo-yo
All of the above are taught and learned inherently on a bicycle.
Seeing you two with that screen made me think of the “cone of silence” from Get Smart
The way Dan and Si kept looking at each other longingly was like “wow u have aged a bit in lockdown”
Welcome back! Good to see you in studio.
3:03 @all bike lanes in nyc
Great to see you guys back in the set. I'm wondering if your camera operator is safe behind plexiglass too, given all the laughing that you guys do. Stay safe. Also, I do miss Lasty's appearances on the show. The whole crew is great, but Lasty's segments were always extra fun. Hope that he's doing well.
Caption: "Lean on me when you're Egan, i'll be your friend, I'll take the Tour de France..."
In Sweden I find traffic and professional drivers quite courteous. Often when possible they will even change to the opposite lane giving me a wide berth.
Next on GTN: swimming everesting. Up and down a waterfall
that would be a big challenge
It's good to see you guys back together in the studio. Shit, it's been five months?
Re the perspex screen. I saw some installed in an office last week, between two lines of desks backed up to each other. Dan and Simon aren't facing each other when presenting the show, but they sit less than 1.5m apart. Is that why the screen is there?
