@@GolAcheron-fc4ug Anyone even talking about this is incredibly late to the party. In decades past sardines used to be way more popular, this is a small blip in comparison. On top of that, companies like Fishwife wouldn't even exist without the "trend". So I'm all for it.
I once ordered the sardines from a famous seafood restaurant in Baltimore, MD. I was surprised to get a tiny plate with literally a can of opened sardines served to me. I admit, I was perplexed. But I tried them, cold. It was one of the yummiest seafood dishes I'd ever had. 👩🍳😙
Over a decade ago, my coworkers would leave the break room when I opened a can of sardines at lunch! It was just the "thought" because the smell wasn't actually there. Tinned fish is great to have on hand for unexpected power outages, extended power outages, and in regular rotation otherwise. I learned to love sardines when a hurricane was heading to south Florida and the grocery stores shelves of canned meats, tuna, and chicken were left with only sardines. The hurricane hit, power was out for five days, and sardines? Was so glad to have them!
Well the cool thing is just like wine, there is a whole range of prices you can get. You can have your every day affordable ones you might dress up or use in a recipe and then you might pay a bit extra for something less common that you eat straight. You don't have to spend a lot to get something good, but if you can have a really good experience doing it if you want.
I wont touch the stuff. But, my brother and mom go nuts for tinned sardines. They are in heaven when they eat some tinned fish on a slice of crusty bread.
I saw the Fish Wife products on another TH-cam channel and bought a selection for Christmas. We really enjoyed them, especially the smoked Salmon tins. They were kinda spendy but great fun at the holidays.
Oh wow! Something that has been a staple for almost two centuries in Europe is suddenly "found" and bought to the US......I actually wish her business luck because tinned fish is DELICIOUS!
Don't kid yourself they have been a cheap eat staple for hundreds of years here as well. Brands like Beach Cliff and King Oscar are now being made upscale with buzzwords by Millennials and Gen Zers. Kind of stupid how you slap the words locally sourced, freshly packed, gluten-free, sustainably harvested then throw weird ingredients into the mix like avocado oil into the mix and people will pay $15 to $20 more than a old school brand that has been selling the same thing for nearly 200 years.
It’s young people that think nothing happened before they were born and it’s hilarious to see them “discover” things. The most uninformed generation ever.
Just yesterday, I got some mustard sardines at dollar general and yummy. The ones at the dollar store were ick. Just buy 1 if your not sure. I grew up with creamed herring, sardines & smelt. Kippers are awesome. Must be the Swedish in me or German. Thanks for the history.
I have become a fan in the last year and a half. They are a good, healthy food. I won't pay more than $4 per can however. My favorites, so far, are Santo Amaro, Matiz, Bela and King Oscar. Avoid skinless and boneless and any packed in water. Enjoy.
I wouldn't say to avoid skinless/boneless entirely, but they're definitely dry compared to skin intact. You might think that's weird since they're bathing in oil or water, but you'll definitely get a drier fish in the mouth as you eat. Not to mention skin and bone provide extra nutrients as well and unlike bigger fresh fish, the skin and bones in canned sardines don't really pop out too much since they're already pretty brittle and soft.
I'm no fan of sardines, but love kipper snacks(smoked herring). If you want to have emergency food on hand, whether that emergency be a refrigerator out of everything but condiments or a choose-your-holocaust event, a single can will give you enough protein for a day. Bought by the case, they're cheap and stack nicely in very little space. Plus they taste good. As good as or better than bacon with scrambled eggs, IMO. Just don't cook the eggs in the kipper's oils, or you get fishy eggs, which is not nice. Pour out the oil first and keep them separate. Also nice in a sandwich with mustard.
I like season brand sardines because they sell them in bulk at sams and costco. you can dress them up however you want. i've done everything from straight out of the can to pasta putanesca with them. all delicious and healthy.
Yeah the 17 bucks was nuts. I can get a tin of kipper snacks for anywhere between $1.50 and $1.85 in the U.S., though, and that's enough protein for an entire day.
Yeah tinned sardines have been a thing here for decades in the UK. I remember as a kid having them. I personally prefer tinned mackerel over them. Also the price they are wanting is shocking. You can get tinned sardines from Morocco for around £0.5 in supermarkets. A couple of quid if you want a fancy brand with all the bells and whistles.
People in the USA ate tinned fish in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Is this something new? No. In Seaview, WA they have the best canned fished and we have been eating it for years. This is not a trend at our house. It is the norm.
Yes the most nastiest sardines I ever brought got it from whole foods and got my money back. But I tried Nuri sardines the most expensive and my God let me tell you it the best in the world.
You got to try Nuri sardines my God let me tell you😂you haven't had sardines until you try Nuri you'll be like what the heck I've been eating all these years😂😂
This is hilarious. We always had tinned fish because it was cheap and I associated it with rough times. It’s great also for like power outages or quick meals. My gf and I routinely eat them just because and also get more exotic ones for date nights at home and now suddenly it’s an expensive trend lol
Are we pretending this is something new? No, just someone who found a creative way to separate dips#it hipsters from their money, like Starbucks did with coffee.
Gen Z- Your Gen X parents probably had to eat this in their childhood. This reminds me of the Stanley cup craze where they have been around forever and somehow now folks can charge $75 dollars for a thermal cup that used to cost $20.
I'd be cautious about the sardines in "olive oil" most are in inflammatory seed oils, even though it says olive oil. Get them in water and add your own premium olive oil.
New trend? Lol! Been eating sardines for nearly seven decades.. But they are really good. And good for you. Find you favorites. For the new - welcome to the "Tinned Fish Family." Try them all - top shelf right down to dollar tins.
What are we even doing here?

We always have tinned fish in our cupboard. My kid loves sardines, and Trader Joe's' offerings are an affordable favorite.
$17 for a tin?😳
I pay about €2 for high quality sardines from Portugal!
Once something becomes "trendy" in the US, you can charge whatever you want. People are buying the story, not the product.

Maybe worth it for the tins…”collect them all!”
Link to said sardines?
The year was 1979, I used to remember tinning our own fish from the Brook nearby. My grandmother was master at it. God bless all

Foods with an indefinite shelf life is very good.
The canned seafood that I get from Bay Center WA is by the Ekone company. Smoked oysters, salmon, and tuna. Deeelish! I love Bay Center. 😀
Yep. They make great stuff.

That's trash. If you want the best sardines in the whole get Nuri.
I LOVE to eat sardines right out of the tin or with rice.
Try it with spicy chili crisp. Thank me later.
