A new trend: Tinned fish

- Tinned fish, like sardines and anchovies, has always been more common in Europe than the U.S. But last year sales of tinned fish in the States rose to $2.7 billion, largely driven by young consumers. Correspondent Luke Burbank talks with Becca Millstein, founder of Fishwife, which sells carefully-packaged, sustainably-harvested seafood; and with Anna Hezel, author of the cookbook "Tin to Table," about the growing popularity of tinned fish.

$17 for a tin?😳
I pay about €2 for high quality sardines from Portugal!
Once something becomes "trendy" in the US, you can charge whatever you want. People are buying the story, not the product.
Well the cool thing is just like wine, there is a whole range of prices you can get. You can have your every day affordable ones you might dress up or use in a recipe and then you might pay a bit extra for something less common that you eat straight. You don't have to spend a lot to get something good, but if you can have a really good experience doing it if you want.
Nope, not doin' it.
Maybe worth it for the tins…”collect them all!”
Link to said sardines?
I once ordered the sardines from a famous seafood restaurant in Baltimore, MD. I was surprised to get a tiny plate with literally a can of opened sardines served to me. I admit, I was perplexed. But I tried them, cold. It was one of the yummiest seafood dishes I'd ever had. 👩🍳😙
What are we even doing here?
Over a decade ago, my coworkers would leave the break room when I opened a can of sardines at lunch! It was just the "thought" because the smell wasn't actually there. Tinned fish is great to have on hand for unexpected power outages, extended power outages, and in regular rotation otherwise. I learned to love sardines when a hurricane was heading to south Florida and the grocery stores shelves of canned meats, tuna, and chicken were left with only sardines. The hurricane hit, power was out for five days, and sardines? Was so glad to have them!
We always have tinned fish in our cupboard. My kid loves sardines, and Trader Joe's' offerings are an affordable favorite.
This is a commercial of Fishwife canned fish.
Oh wow! Something that has been a staple for almost two centuries in Europe is suddenly "found" and bought to the US......I actually wish her business luck because tinned fish is DELICIOUS!
Don't kid yourself they have been a cheap eat staple for hundreds of years here as well. Brands like Beach Cliff and King Oscar are now being made upscale with buzzwords by Millennials and Gen Zers. Kind of stupid how you slap the words locally sourced, freshly packed, gluten-free, sustainably harvested then throw weird ingredients into the mix like avocado oil into the mix and people will pay $15 to $20 more than a old school brand that has been selling the same thing for nearly 200 years.

It’s young people that think nothing happened before they were born and it’s hilarious to see them “discover” things. The most uninformed generation ever.
@@zekelucente9702 Exactly!
I wont touch the stuff. But, my brother and mom go nuts for tinned sardines. They are in heaven when they eat some tinned fish on a slice of crusty bread.
They need to get Mathew Carlson on here. What are we even doing here?
The year was 1979, I used to remember tinning our own fish from the Brook nearby. My grandmother was master at it. God bless all
It's an acquired taste
even for sophisticated palates. Delicious smeared on a piece of crusty fresh bread...😋
I saw the Fish Wife products on another TH-cam channel and bought a selection for Christmas. We really enjoyed them, especially the smoked Salmon tins. They were kinda spendy but great fun at the holidays.
The canned seafood that I get from Bay Center WA is by the Ekone company. Smoked oysters, salmon, and tuna. Deeelish! I love Bay Center. 😀
Yep. They make great stuff.
Foods with an indefinite shelf life is very good.
I LOVE to eat sardines right out of the tin or with rice.
Try it with spicy chili crisp. Thank me later.
Dang. The price of my tinned fish just went trendy $$$
I have become a fan in the last year and a half. They are a good, healthy food. I won't pay more than $4 per can however. My favorites, so far, are Santo Amaro, Matiz, Bela and King Oscar. Avoid skinless and boneless and any packed in water. Enjoy.
What's wrong w fish packed in water?
@@everhirstseyt2667 Nothing wrong with them but ,to me, they are not as tasty. Just a personal preference.
I wouldn't say to avoid skinless/boneless entirely, but they're definitely dry compared to skin intact. You might think that's weird since they're bathing in oil or water, but you'll definitely get a drier fish in the mouth as you eat.
Not to mention skin and bone provide extra nutrients as well and unlike bigger fresh fish, the skin and bones in canned sardines don't really pop out too much since they're already pretty brittle and soft.
Just yesterday, I got some mustard sardines at dollar general and yummy. The ones at the dollar store were ick. Just buy 1 if your not sure. I grew up with creamed herring, sardines & smelt. Kippers are awesome. Must be the Swedish in me or German. Thanks for the history.
Love kipper snacks!
Here we go....Gen Z discovering something for the first time that's been around forever🤦🏻♂️
exactly and now the price will soar
seethe
didnt you hear? its the 'era of rediscovery' now that we have gen alpha as well
Right? My family bought them in the 1970s because it was cheap and filling dinner for a casserole.
I have a buddy who would eat his family's delicious enchiladas with sardines. It used to gross me out. The enchiladas were great. 😂
I buy sardines sometimes. I like them with mustard.
King Oscar brand
Loved the Scooby Doo clip; love the product. I hope to buy some in the future.
Yummy! Thank you
Yeah tinned sardines have been a thing here for decades in the UK. I remember as a kid having them. I personally prefer tinned mackerel over them.
Also the price they are wanting is shocking. You can get tinned sardines from Morocco for around £0.5 in supermarkets. A couple of quid if you want a fancy brand with all the bells and whistles.
Portuguese mackerel tins are aplenty in my cupboard!
The algorithm brought us together 😂
Paid in full by Fishwife. Imagine paying 40 bucks for three tins.
Fish which is my favorite dish!💯🍽️🐟🐠🐡
🎶But without any money
it’s just a wish🎶
What about clams?
It seems to lead to lots of vocal fry . . .
It's become trendy.
What's the difference with canned and tinned fish?
the price!!
Try west coast pole caught Albacore for great taste and nutrition!
I like season brand sardines because they sell them in bulk at sams and costco. you can dress them up however you want. i've done everything from straight out of the can to pasta putanesca with them. all delicious and healthy.
I'm no fan of sardines, but love kipper snacks(smoked herring). If you want to have emergency food on hand, whether that emergency be a refrigerator out of everything but condiments or a choose-your-holocaust event, a single can will give you enough protein for a day. Bought by the case, they're cheap and stack nicely in very little space. Plus they taste good. As good as or better than bacon with scrambled eggs, IMO. Just don't cook the eggs in the kipper's oils, or you get fishy eggs, which is not nice. Pour out the oil first and keep them separate. Also nice in a sandwich with mustard.
I like dill pickles also pickled fish.
Love canned fish!
Trend?.My family had tinned salmon, tuna and sardines since the 1960s in the Midwest.
Tone def to the reality of the economy for a significant percentage of our country
Yeah the 17 bucks was nuts. I can get a tin of kipper snacks for anywhere between $1.50 and $1.85 in the U.S., though, and that's enough protein for an entire day.
Oh yeah, canned fish is like fine wine. I see some fine shinola marketing going on here.
TH-cam sardines or tinned fish. There are dozens of channels devoted to them.
I'd be cautious about the sardines in "olive oil" most are in inflammatory seed oils, even though it says olive oil. Get them in water and add your own premium olive oil.
❤ My wife loves tin fish
Mmmmm my favorite meal!
Gen Z- Your Gen X parents probably had to eat this in their childhood. This reminds me of the Stanley cup craze where they have been around forever and somehow now folks can charge $75 dollars for a thermal cup that used to cost $20.
New trend? Lol! Been eating sardines for nearly seven decades.. But they are really good. And good for you. Find you favorites.
For the new - welcome to the "Tinned Fish Family." Try them all - top shelf right down to dollar tins.
I eat Sardines 3-4 days a week!
Look up Gabrielle Hamilton sardines- totally yummy.
Sweet story about her depending on them as a broke youngster but still really loving and looking forward to them.
People in the USA ate tinned fish in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Is this something new? No. In Seaview, WA they have the best canned fished and we have been eating it for years. This is not a trend at our house. It is the norm.
You must be very proud
@@dookiepost No, I am not. I am just reporting facts. The PNW had a huge fishing industry.
For how much money!?!?
Thanks TikTok for ruining yet another thing
New trend??! This lady is old af and is saying this is a ‘new trend’. They been doing this literally as long as anyone has been alive. Anything for clicks 😂
Are we pretending this is something new? No, just someone who found a creative way to separate dips#it hipsters from their money, like Starbucks did with coffee.
I was going to say, snobby hipster. But I wasn't sure if "hipster" was still being used 😂
Rather buy fresh fish
This is not new. Do your research
Yikes 😂😂
Nope!
What a joke
Nope 👎🏼
The beginning of a new era fir tinned fish....no, its not....just a trend, sorry
Reminds me of my ex girlfriend
What, tinned fish?
@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. yes sir
New trend? Okay, Boomer.
It is a fad
I give them 2 years before their company gets 'can'd'. Yes, it is fad. Sounds very millennial.
Sardines, anchovies, and all of them are vomitrocious.
if ur a baby and only eat chicken fingers, yeah
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN PUTTING STUFF IN CANS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF CANS THEMSELVES!
Look up Sheldon Simeon’s sardine pupu recipe at food & wine. Yo welcome foodies
