CN trains in Atlantic Canada with containers for Nova Scotia 1991 - 2016

  • In 1991 containers destined to Halifax & Sydney Nova Scotia were usually carried in general merchandise trains hauled by Alco/MLW locomotives. The containers were usually on modified flatcars. Over the years dedicated container trains and special cars to carry the containers have been introduced. Also the locomotives have become more powerful and the Alcos have been replaced by GM & GE locomotives. Trains have become longer, mid train or rear helpers (Distributed Power Units - DPUs) have been introduced and now locomotives with AC rather than DC traction motors are being introduced. All these changes are illustrated in this video which took about 60 hours to transfer from tape, to edit and to produce for display on TH-cam! So please watch and click on the adverts - I get a small commission that helps pay for camera and computer equipment.

It’s sad to see videos of CN #135, 136,148 and 149. I hope we can see another daily intermodal on the Bedford and Springhill subdivision other then #120 and #121.

Steve, is there any more footage taken by David on the day of the first clip? It would be great to see more of the RS18's working the yard!

Good question. I don't have any of the original footage - that was all donated to the C. Robert Craig museum, I believe.
