    At a Minnesota Wrestling Camp my son asked Sergei why he came out of retirement. He said he was coaching the next batch of wrestlers at his weight and none of them could beat him so he put the best wrestler in his weight class on the mat.

    For someone who made a career on offence, John Smith displayed excellent defence in this one. Good sportsmanship displayed by both athletes. Cheers.

    I guess the question is who would win in their prime . Sergei was a phenom at 57 kg and he was 4 years out of retirement, but he still gives a good reckoning. But smith s style was hard to beat . I remember at the Korean pre Olympic tournament i was cutting weight two nights before and happened into the Korean club practice . Smith ripped through one guy after another starting at 48 kg and working all the way to 90kg. He was doing a lot of low singles .. unstoppable

    Would have liked to see Smith in one more Olympics. What a dominating athlete. I'd be curious to see stats on records over the past 20 years. Wondering if he was the most dominant in terms of won/loss and would also be curious to see point stats. For every point against, it seems like he would have 4-5 of his own.

      @@stampscapes I wrestled in the 90s and 2000’s but my coach was older and he would tell me and my twin brother about different matches and he let us borrow a tape of Olympic champs vs Olympic champs and Kenny Monday beats Dave Shultz real bad on that then Monday gets beat pretty good by Satiev and I talked to him about the Satiev vs. Brandon Slay match and he said Slay winning the Olympic title was one of the biggest upsets in sports. After he beat Satiev he got beat in the finals but the guy failed his drug test so he became champ then retired kinda early. Slay never even won the ncaas. Satiev Slay and karelin gardner are both in the house 2000 Olympics like 24 hours apart. That was a rough Olympics for Russia’s wrestling. Well kinda, they still had 6 champs and won very handily. We only had two and we were second overall

      Satiev was also a master technician but in a heavier weight class so difficult to compare. Beloglozov was also wrestling a full weight class higher and a number of years past his prime. I rank Beloglozov, Smith and Satiev as 3 of the best wrestlers in history (there are others) but it's difficult to compare them with each other.

    • @joshuathompson6053
      @joshuathompson6053 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you, tough to compare, and it also depends on style match up. Smith had a style that was tough to match up with. Beloglozov, Smith and Satiev were innovators and good for long periods of time. Others have been better over one or two years but those guys did it over many years and that is truly greatness.

    That was awesome. 4:39, Beloglazov is so fast, wow. I wonder how much size was a factor?
    Great match, and great class by two of the best ever.

    Watching John Smith perform in this match is a joy. Both men had superlative careers. Thanks for posting this.

    Beloglasov is, by wrestling standards, and old man who was coaching only at the time and I believe stopped competing. Beloglasov wipes the mat with him if younger.

    Anyone who thinks John Smith only hit low singles, lol. His high crotch to the other side was absolutely deadly. Hitting it three times in a row against one of the greatest wrestlers of all time Sergei Beloglazov (8 time world gold; two Olympic and six World Championships) is no small feat.

    this just goes goes to show you that you just need a good move, just one or two perfected and performed as fast as this and no doubt you will succeed. this is what i want to acheve as well and this video will be the key!2016 Olympics!

    Well that not that interesting if Beloglazov was retired wrestler during that time,

    Both of them are great wrestlers, but the peak of Sergeis career was gone earlier. It's just was John Smiths time
