  • I take my DIY truck camper on an overland trial run. Also known as a short camping trip. It's our first time camping in the new camper. We have fun and we find lots of opportunities to improve the camper's functionality.

    Making it out and back is definitely a win. Awesome to see you out using the camper

    Sounds like you had a fun getaway! When I put mudflaps that close to my tires, they sometimes got sucked back up over the tire when reversing in rugged terrain. This ended up causing one of them to get ripped off and I only found out about it when a cop gave me a ticket for it! They didn't stop many rocks either until I made them much longer.

      Something to think about for sure. I didn't consider reversing on rough terrain

    It's nice when in that necessity is the mother of invention but not having to be in a rush. Nice solutions 🙌

    Nice camper. I'll have to rewatch your Central America episodes, my favorite Pan American TH-cam channel. I do miss Jaeger though, he was the real star of the show.

    That is really impressive. I love it, now if only for a full sized truck.
    My friend also just finished building his own truck camper. I think you will like it and maybe see some ideas worth borrowing. It's my newest video, just published yesterday, 01 20 2024
    Take care and looking forward to some trip reports when those start happening.

    So glad to see this video Matt, I've watched it twice 😁 always great seeing your solutions to problems. I agree with the other comment, your mudflap is mounted too close to the rear of the tyre, when backing up offroad that will rip off. Personally I'd solve it by putting a triangular shaped storage box like you see on thousands of Australian 4x4 flat deck utes. How was the standing height and bed comfort? I really thought you'd be ecstatic about being able to stand in there. Thanks again for the great videos

      Super happy with the standing height and having the ability to be inside without being in bed. So nice for cooking, getting dressed, and so many little things. The bed is super comfy 6" foam mattress. Not a ton of headroom up there but plenty to crawl into bed and sleep without feeling claustrophobic.
      I guess I'll have to put mudflaps back on my to do list. I like those angled storage boxes under the tray, but I'm hesitant to add any more storage/weight behind the rear axle. She's already rear axle heavy.

      @@TheTravelingTogetherJournal those triangular shaped under deck storage boxes are also available in rotomoulded plastic which is very lightweight. So could potentially be a good place to store bulky but lightweight items. But if you're happy with the storage capacity you have just moving the mudflaps back should work well. Glad to hear you're enjoying the standing height, we absolutely love it in our build :)

    Thanks for the update on issues. I'm watching closely because I keep thinking about putting together a small trailer built on the principles you used. I figure that if I can drop the roof down to the height of the truck cap I'll be getting about 20 mpg (in my dreams). What fuel mileage are you getting?

    • @TheTravelingTogetherJournal
      @TheTravelingTogetherJournal  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't figured out fuel mileage yet. It's on the to-do-list.
      With our old camper setup we averaged 15mpg
