- The world’s biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, has set sail on its maiden voyage from Miami, Florida.
It measures 365 metres in length and weighs 251,000 gross tonnes.
But how does it compare to other vessels and large iconic buildings like Madison Square Garden or the Eiffel Tower?

It is a very impressive engineering achievement, but if it's full of shops, water slides, bars, and casinos, isn't that like visiting somewhere like Las Vegas?

Oh wow. A serious answer. The Titanic was built in sections. The steel plates held together with iron rivets not as strong. They did that to save money So basically the rivets popped on hitting the iceberg. But it was a long time ago. 🕊️
@paul7TM actually it was due to the temperature, the steel broke easier and broke like glass because it was cold

Impressive. Though, I have to say, there was just this elegant mystique about a cruise liner like the Titanic that just cannot be associated with something like this. Perhaps it was the era or maybe the lore that gives it a feeling of authenticity, which in modern times is simply lost. Regardless, good luck to the new ship....Bon Voyage!
I understand what you mean. In the days of the Titanic, the ocean liners were not so much for pleasure, but a mode of transport. That alone differentiates them from the majority of cruise liners today. In an oversimplified way, they were the transcontinental ferries of their time. Or, the intercontinental flights of today, which is probably the better comparison. I suppose the mystique came from a different passenger with a completely different purpose. It was also of course, a time when going abroad was a huge thing.
You have to measure it in the universal system of measurement: Potential Lawsuits.

Oh come on....covid hasn't gone away, but it has mutated enough by now that it has become far weaker and that getting it is for the majority a mild sickness, if that. Epidemics on cruise liners or other long distance ships is nothing new, but if we continued to live in fear of what 'might happen' we would end up dying having not done anything. There is a time for cautionary behaviour and there is a time for carrying on and enjoying life. We are currently in the latter phase.
Even if it's not COVID, outbreaks of horrible viruses do occur on these massive ships. Norovirus being one particularly nasty bug.
@@heydh. I had norovirus once (not on a cruise ship). I was about to eat dinner with friends and it came on suddenly and I was laid out, feverish, in the space of, like, 10 minutes. It was awful. One of the friends caught it from me-unsurprisingly since it’s highly contagious-and collapsed on the streetcar about two days later. The only relatively good thing was that it lasted only about 24 hours for each of us.

Water is the waste product from combustion. It is not a fuel source.
Hydroelectricity would never work for numerous reasons - including not being able to output nearly enough energy to keep the ship at a normal speed for a prolonged amount of time. Engineers have definitely thought of this, don't think WHEN but HOW

How is this allowed to be built? There are so many emission regulations around every other vehicle, but these monstrosities are allowed to exist.
I understand a sizable percentage of those passengers are drunk at any given time. That's what keeps me from booking a cruise on one of these: the AH0le factor.
