    You are one of my favourite channels. One man and his dog living as free as you can. No drama or BS. Interesting boats, scooters, projects and places. All good. Great to see more subscribers coming onboard. Definitely well deserved. Your videos are very well done.

    This is one of my favorite episodes thus far … when you show the special little things that you brought with you ??
    You show more of who you are ,
    And what makes you tick .
    It makes you way more real to us .. and more relatable … and yes … might this little Texas grandma say … makes you more loveable . Especially loved seeing that cross a subscriber made for you … and I love the drift wood shirt hanger … and the driftwood candle holder you slid the cross into ??? Genius 👍🏻

    Nicely done, my man (and Wavy). I’ve always loved this style of boat, little dogs and river adventures. I wish I could do a trip just like this, especially in fall! The 0.5 video is great, as are the regular ones. Your channel is gonna’ blow up after this trip 😎👍. Thinking you should have a good marine pump shotgun with a light on it. Pretty sure any state allows these.

  • @riverrat4631

    Hey Brenton,🇺🇸🦅
    I have not watched the channel for awhile. TH-cam suggested this video to me, probably because I’m always looking for Shanty Boat videos. I didn’t realize you was doing the great loop on the Barge. Just noticed you have over 10,000 subscribers. Congratulations, you deserve it. I’m very impressed with how nice you fixed up the Barge. I’m going back and start the videos of this adventure and watch them all. If you pull off the Great Loop on a Shanty Boat I know you will have a huge following before it’s over. I always knew your channel would grow if you did the loop in a cheap Shanty Boat. You and I talked once about a guy doesn’t need a big fancy boat to make content. The average man can relate to the adventure you are doing now. I predict this adventure will grow the channel faster than you realize.
    I was in Alabama last weekend looking at water front property on Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River. Close to the town of Waterloo Alabama in the NorthWest corner of the state. I sold my waterfront property in Florida and looking for remote property along the Tennessee River or Swamp property near Pierre Part LA. I had a new aluminum 22 foot Skiff build by a company in Pierre Part last winter. I spent a few days in the Swamps with the boat builder. I kinda fell in love with the Swamps of LA. Plus Property is cheap and it’s warmer there in the winter. I’m heading down to Pierre Part in two weeks to look at a remote property on Bayou Magazille, just south of Lake Verret. You can travel from the Mississippi to the Gulf from this property. Plus it has a covered boat house. It’s just south of Pierre Part. My friend Lynn that built my new skiff lives close by and this property belongs to his family. Him and I became close friends after he built my boat. He is a true Cajun for sure.
    Anyway, I wanted to say good luck with this adventure and the new found fame. I really believe this is the trip that blows up the channel. And you definitely deserve this. Fair Winds 🇺🇸🦅

    Nicely done, Brenton. I'm making my own preps for doing the loop - scoping looper channels and the tube showed me yours. My initial plan is to do it on a classic plastic A30 sailboat with a binnacle mast that can be raised and lowered on the boat at will without a crane. Your Shanty might just make me rethink that. It looks very practical for the river sections. I want to sail whenever possible - sooo - decisions decisions. You'll likely be done before I launch. Too bad. You seem to be good company. I won't cross post a link to mine on your channel but if yer curious, click my name for a look at what I'm doing now. That way if your main motor ( God forbid) was to come up lame, you could just slap your backup motor on and just keep it moving. Love the show. Some guy blew a stop light this past Saturday. Brenton, I love the set up of your shanty. Nicely thought out details. Excellent choice in the Yamaha for your main powerplant. If you are in Clinton, Iowa, you are making excellent time. Plenty of time to escape the northern cold of the upper mississippi. Have you considered a pilothouse mounted VHF-FM radio? That and a proper fixed antenna would allow you better range in communicating with the locks as well as other vessels on your great journey versus the handheld I've seen you use. I always liked the NOAA weather radio feature, too, though I imagine your handheld should have the weather channels on it too. Even to this day, I like to use my C Crane pocket radio's weather channel feature to determine what the day's weather is going to be. Say hello and give a good scratching to Wavey for me!

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Michael, I did think about a mounted radio, but I already have the handheld and it fit the budget. One of my wonderful long term subscribers Sent it to me a year or two ago. Unfortunately, I forgot the charger base for it...so I'm looking online for a replacement charger. I never turn on the radio unless I'm coming up to a lock and dam. I've been passed by a couple of other (assuming) loopers and did turn it on to see if they were hailing me...do you know what channel that would be?

    • @michaelnotigan7796
      @michaelnotigan7796 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brenton, Channel 16 is considered a "hailing and distress channel". For example, you call the boat you wish to speak to on 16 and once you get them, you both agree to take your channel conversation to another channel, which frees up 16 for other radio traffic. BTW, Channel 13 is what is used in "bridge to bridge" channel talk here on the east coast....aka you want to raise that bridge tender or that tug boat coming down upon you. Hope that helps ya!@@backwatersandbackroads

    Awesome. A new Brenton vid before work today. I was watching you talk and am reminded of your first shantyboat trip. You did not want to be infront of the camera. You talked from behind the camera a lot more. You seem a lot more comfortable with talking in front of tha camera. Yer' doin' great.
    Looking at your ladder. Can you get back on board if you accidently fall off when you dont have a ladder down?
    I'd buy a T shirt with the wavy pic of it.

      I loathed stepping in front of the camera back then. I got use to it later. Someone has to be the host since Wavey insists on being the star :) My little corner at the marina was where I built the original shanty beagle. I rented that spot for 5 years, until the marina and village got taken over by busy bodies playing favorites. My solution was to buy a piece of river front property a half a mile down the road. Problem solved. Always sidestep A-holes when you can. ;) Thanks for being a member, buddy. If I ever figure out how to make shirts, I'll send you one for free :)

    Did you put a clear sealer on those outside walls?
    Little late now but I would have used a 4" wide horizontal strip of PVC lumber, a piece of Z molding, a kick out strip of vinyl or treated lattice, then ran the siding.
    That way the bottom piece is not wicking up water causing it to rot.
    When I used to be a builder when installing cedar siding I would just dip each piece completely into the sealer so it was protected on all sides so I got less splitting and cupping.

I’ve been following for a long while now and love everything about what and how you do it, and how you live it. Watching your channel is like that special little secret thing that you have and love. I’ve watched channels get big or popular and then they lose that special charm they once had.

And if it can't, they underestimate all the one foot depth, sheltered waters we can go hide in, litteraly, up a creek! Ther we can wait out the foul weather! Hi Jo, TW200. There's actually another shanty boater that brings his TW200 on the nose of his boat. It certainly can be done.
