I’ve been using your method for about 2 years and have made SO MUCH PROGRESS! Recently my 82yo uncle asked me to help him clean out a large cabinet his late wife had stuffed full. He wanted to use it but was completely overwhelmed. I followed your advice about helping others declutter and stuck to the method. In roughly an hour we had a ton of trash, several bags of donations, and a clear empty space he quickly repurposed to suit his “right now” life. And he did it all without feeling anxious. That’s a huge win at any age!
I was listening to this while folding laundry and when you talked about your pink shirt, I literally walked 2 steps over to the ironing board and picked up a light blue shirt (a color I have trouble parting with!) that had been sitting on that ironing board for two solid months because I didn’t want to wear it again enough to make myself iron it, and I walked 2 steps in the other direction and put it in the donation box!! Thank you, Dana!!
The lady at our local charity shop today told me that she wished people would clear out their children's unwanted toys and were thinking of donating them would do it in the lead up to Christmas rather than after. The lady said she always sees a number of parents (who might be strapped for cash) in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones, she said there's very rarely anything just before, but they get inundated with toys in the days after.. It really made me think about it in a way I wouldn't have before. If you know your children are going to get lots of presents from Father Christmas this year, by clearing out the toy cupboard s s few weeks earlier you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too.
Love this! It does feel good to know that someone else will appreciate items that I wasn’t using or don’t really need anymore. Whether it’s books, kitchen supplies or clothing etc. Giving items a new life is a great thing! 😊
When I was a kid, my mother would come to me and my brothers a month or so before Christmas, and explain that since we were going to get new things for Christmas, maybe we could part with some of our old things. She always added that some other kids had less than we did, and we wanted them to have a good Christmas too, didn't we? She let us make the choices, but gave us a target, as in, "I think you could fill this box". I am grateful that she did this with us!
I hadn't heard of your head explosion rule before, but I think it's a good one. Recently I let go of a basket that I kept telling myself I should try to reshape to make it look better. It was expensive and was from a small business when I lived in another state, so it would be hard to get again. But whenever I saw the basket it would cause me stress. Felt good to not have it screaming at me to fix it whenever I pass by it.
I just have to fangirl here! You changed my brain (in a good way), and I feel like you're the only one who gets how I think about stuff. The container concept alone... thank you!
I don't know if my previous comment went through....but decluttering as much as we have, listening to you and Dawn and Cas, has made hurricane prep POSSIBLE for us...not easy, but possible. Thank you so much! So many hurricanes ago we were just in head explosion mode. Decluttering is such a game changer.
Yep! I’ve been slowly decluttering my stuff (I’m so bad at it and after decades of studying decluttering, I’m still bad at it!), and at least I’ve made good progress in my bathroom and the kitchen. I keep my side of our table clean and ready for meals, but his side is always so full of mail, computer, receipts and paper clutter, he has to move piles to have a place for his plate. I have noticed that he has started keeping his side a tiny bit neater and I think it’s because of the glaring difference between the two sides. I’m working on my side of the bedroom next, so I’ll be interested to see if that has any effect. In the meantime, I do have a few places where my eyes (and mind) can rest😉
I have only recently found you. I never knew people like me existed. WOW I only wish I found you years ago. You have helped me so much. I go to weekly Weight Watchers meetings and have lost 48 pounds YEAH - but my clothes don’t fit anymore. It is so rewarding to get rid of my clothes that no longer fit. I take them to my meetings each week and people are so glad to get my hand me downs. These are nice clothes (some with price tags still on them) from expensive clothing stores. My moderately priced (cheap) clothes went to a thrift store. After watching this video I am going to address things that I just couldn’t get rid of yesterday but now I know I can. Thank you Dana you are an angel.
What a great idea to offer your clothing to others in the Weight Watchers group. Not everybody will be in a position to buy new items as the pounds fall away which must be discouraging for them. How kind and thoughtful of you.
Thank you for your kind words. The lady that took most of my clothes has lost 100 POUNDS!!! We have all been so proud of her. She isn't in a position to purchase new things and to see her beam in her new clothes makes me so happy.
i LOVE that you have no background music in then video's. thank you for all you do! i love your method, finally something that WORKS. Better is good :)
Whenever I get stuck, I just flash back to the declutter marathon we had to get my in-law’s home ready before my father-in-law was discharged from the rehab facility. All the motivation I need to keep going. 😉
I haven't heard of the head explosion rule but I experienced it last week. We had a cloth bag from, of all places, the funeral home that we dealt with when my dad passed away. I would see it with the other cloth bags now and then and it would be a head explosion experience each time. I told my husband last week that I was throwing it away because it is a bad memory even though they were kind and helpful. So now I know what to call it. Perfect description "head explosion rule!"
Your advice always speaks to my mind and heart! Head explosion..I am surprised my head is still on my shoulders! I recently listened to Decluttering at the speed of Life. I loved hearing your voice for over six hours as I worked in my home😀
Looking beautiful as usual. Yes I'm stuck lol. Not only am I stuck, I have this weird issue where it gets WORSE! Like WAY worse! (I had a house fire and lost everything I own and that made my life really hard because it's extremely extremely hard and anx producing to get rid of even a candy wrapper). It's so frustrating and such a total struggle. Seeing your perfect home with no stuff is hard. I wish you'd do way more 1 hour betters so we can have more real life examples of real mess. That's where the value of your channel is, in the real, not the theories or questions.
I’m sorry for what you’ve been through. I hope you’re able to get unstuck. Remember that many people struggle with this. Do you have a family member, friend or neighbor who might help you if you asked? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Kind people truly like helping and it might help you get unstuck. You don’t have to handle it alone. Sending you a hug. Best of luck. 🍀❤️
So many things have the "head explosion" effect on me. I have been at a stand still and have been reverting to my default of avoidance. I'm gonna go back through and see (now I know what to call the effect) and try to keep my head together.
So that's what was happening to me...head explosion 😂 When I can't make a decision I walk away and usually that gives me clarity. All of sudden, what I was agonizing over, becomes simple . I come back, I get rid of it, and several additional items follow. Thanks Dana.
This was a very interesting perspective. After I don't know how many years of decluttering, I'm still stuck sometimes. I usually choose the skip it option, because decluttering is a marathon, and if something is too hard to declutter this round, it may be easier next time. But the head explosion rule seems much more powerful. I will try it next time I'm stuck.
The head explosion rule is brilliant and all your methods of decluttering are. I've been following you for a long time and if ever I feel like I'm slipping back into my old ways I listen to one of your videos or books and get myself back on track. Xx
Your decluttering method has been the best for me. I have made a ton of progress using it. There are, however, those items you just mentioned in this video that stumped me. I'm going to go back to those items and use this new info. They are sentimental items and they do make me feel sad, like I could explode when I see them. They're stressers. I'm tired of feeling stressed out. They need to go. Thank you for this video.
Well, very timely. I have a shirt with the most beautiful fabric, but it is a weird shape that is not flattering. I wore it a few times just so I could look down and enjoy the fabric, in spite of the weird shape like a short box with a wrinkled neck( yes I am sure an iron would help but I don:t do irons). Yesterday it was one of two tops I put in the 'maybe' spot as I weed my clothes down to what can hang without cramming in my half of the closet. Today those both go to the official donate box. Thanks, Dana!
Such good suggestions! I just realized that I have done both things you describe when decluttering (at some time in the distant past), but it is good to be reminded of the beneficial effects that both of these actions have. Especially the momentum thing. Thanks!

By the way, I LOVE the little funny comments at the end of each video! That's my kind of humor😂 Thank you, Dana, for bringing me hope with your method🩷
As I've been sorting things I started with a goal of getting rid of at least 100 things/room but I have gotten rid of way more because I've been going by the "if it's a maybe, it's a no". If I'm hemming and hawing about something, I pitch it.
Thank-you. I have also started skipping over things. As long as I have thrown some things out, and the space is better, I am ok with the progress. Esp. now that the cupboard door can actually close on my baking pans 😁
Yes! I find that with things I skip that they stay on my mind and this is my way of figuring it out, reconsidering whether I truly want them. Then a few days or weeks later I revisit them and often by then I’m ready to let go. It’s so interesting to me how momentum builds and it gets easier each time I declutter. Things I kept for many years have become less important. This is especially true for sentimental things I was once attached to. I can sit with something for a few minutes and remember that time in my life and be grateful for the memory but then I can let it go in service of not being weighed down with tons of stuff. I’ve realized that I’m happy just saving a few items in each category or just a few photos of certain times in my life. This has helped me so much. 😊
This is exactly where I'm at right now, letters and cards running out my ears. I'm just ready to pack them all into a box and come back to them at a later date. The other stuff I have to deal with is easier, even though it's all hard. Thank you.
I does get harder when the dah things are out. Head explosion rule; and just skip the item rule, are so useful to keep the momentum going and not stop. Thank you Dana, you perfectly acted out the indecision conundrum.
My subconscious was prodding me to do more, so I took another look at my linen closet. I've been holding on to these towels for years and today was the day I donated them to an animal shelter. Used ones first, but some 'new' ones too. If I haven't actually put them to use in years, I don't need them, but I do need the usable space. Now I can find my cleaning supplies much more easily. And the county was grateful I thought of them, first. Even threw in a jar of peanut butter, because that was on their wish list. I guess they use that for a 'treat' when the doggies have been good.
Awww thank you . Those towels have gone to a good home where they really need them. Yes my dogs absolutely love a spoon of peanut butter. Me too actually.
You nailed it again Dana! I’m going through linens and baby clothes in storage and I assumed I could let it all go since I haven’t looked at it in years. The problem is, we’re planning to move next summer and I have no idea if I’ll need the linens. I’m okay now with setting it aside and making the decision after we move since I was able to let go of a lot of baby clothes. I still made progress ❤
Definitely get a pink shirt, Reid! Dana, you look lovely in the pink shirt you're wearing. Great video! Just took a bunch of bags to Goodwill today and lots of clothing.
I had a whole drawer full of bras back when I was young, they were so pretty, for years I couldn’t let them go. One day I decided I was only going to declutter all of them. Yes I was going to do it. I only declutter 3. Next week I tried again decluttered some me. Then that made me feel so good that I decluttered down to 3 I decided 3 is enough.
I really like the skip it rule. Because I will do a lot of good work decluttering other areas while avoiding the difficult item. I feel like Dana would call this procrasticleaning.
Thank you Dana. I started decluttering months ago and in very short order had nine carrier bags to go to the charity shops. The bags are still here. I no longer drive and have a major problem with my spine. BUT. Bearing in mind there must be eight shops within fifteen minutes walk of home, I am well aware that if I'd only taken one bag at a time they would have been long gone!
Dear Dana, this was a wonderful video! The head explosion rule was exactly what my mind needed right now. I'm so grateful for your decluttering teachings in general, but this one was just excellent! Thank you so much 💜💕🩷
I was organizing my shoe closet yesterday, and I got rid of a lot of old shoes and boots. I came across a pair of long timberland boots with a wedge heel, that I’ve had for maybe 15 years they’re still new bring I only used them maybe 2x. I wasn’t going to get rid of them, but I knew I wear them, so I’m getting rid of them.
I love the idea of head explosion. It's a funny name, but it sticks. Love your videos. I am a new subsciber starting a decluttering journey with a husband who is a hoarder! Is there hope?
There is! Just remember to start with your items first; your clothes, your books, your clutter. And maybe you can get him in on helping to get rid of obvious trash, keeping in mind that if it's not your trash, he gets to make the decision.
you and your method have been so helpful with decluttering my art studio! over 10 years of college art left to be dealt with later until whoops, the GIANT rack of shelves i had for all of it collapsed. i had been meaning to get to it but now i have no choice because the reality of the space is it all never really fit. that shelving unit was rated over 1000 lbs, how much did i have on there for it to bend? either way it's step 1 for now and already a ton of progress is happening. thank you!
Very helpful. Skip pink. You look best in jewel tones especially a nice medium to dark blue. Just saying. I finally gave up on pastels. I decluttered based on what colors look better and now I get so many compliments. It's weird but true. 😅
I think my issue is that I'm getting down to harder stuff - piles of paper where sorting takes a lot of time for little reward; going through areas where most of the clutter belongs to other family members and so I have to get their time to go through it, etc.
I’ve been using your method for about 2 years and have made SO MUCH PROGRESS! Recently my 82yo uncle asked me to help him clean out a large cabinet his late wife had stuffed full. Aaah. The 'avoidance' default. My old friend!
That really helped. I automatically say no to anything that needs ironing. I can just imagine the wrinkles of the fabric... no way

Bearing in mind there must be eight shops within fifteen minutes walk of home, I am well aware that if I'd only taken one bag at a time they would have been long gone!
Just love u! Thanks for that right on time capsule... before my head was to explode!🎉
Thank you Dana!! This made a lot of sense to me.
lol as a Julie I appreciated your clarification
Dear Dana, this was a wonderful video! The head explosion rule was exactly what my mind needed right now. I'm so grateful for your decluttering teachings in general, but this one was just excellent! Thank you so much 💜💕🩷
I always do the skip. I should try the head explosion one, but for some silly reason it scares me. Despite realizing how illogical it is.
I love this new rule! Lol Reid: yes! Every man needs a pink shirt. It shows that you're confident in your manliness. :)
My brother has both a pink and a pale lavender button from shirt -- in high school in the early 1970s. And he looked great in them. Go for it, Reid! ❤
Thanks Dana! The timing of this video is perfect for me. I have always felt the head explosion but never used it to move forward. Now I will!😊
SO glad it was clothes you used for this! My weak spot ❤
“If it’s itchy, I don’t wear it.” Yep - ADHD!
Yes! Itchy is the worst! Also tees that are too stiff and not really soft. Why was I wearing things that annoyed me?
Fantastic show. Thanks.🇨🇦
The credits at the end...😂😂 I always stick around just for those.
Nice to see a new video from you . Would be nice too, if we could see Reid in his new pink shirt someday if he gets himself one. 😃
Once again, your tips set off a Eureka! moment!! Thank you
Dana, you look lovely in pink! Definitely your color❣️
Maybe it's not "I don't like it" but "I don't like it *enough*" That works for me.
I love the head explosion method ! I'm doing great in my decluttering journey thanks to you and the other ladies.
Its OK to pass up the hard decision at that moment, and go on to another item!!! YES!!!!! ITS OK OK OK OK OK OK. AND MORE OK!!!!!
I needed exactly this, right now. Great content as always 🤗
Great video 💜
I was organizing my shoe closet yesterday, and I got rid of a lot of old shoes and boots. I came across a pair of long timberland boots with a wedge heel, that I’ve had for maybe 15 years they’re still new bring I only used them maybe 2x. I wasn’t going to get rid of them, but I knew I wear them, so I’m getting rid of them.
Love this. Thanks.
Inspiration & motivation!! 🩷👚😘
Love the head explosion rule!!!!!
The head explosion rule has come through for me so many times! 🤯
Love this Dana !
Great advise!! So smart TO JUST KEEP GOING!! Head explosion decision making!!! 🤯 Just what I needed today!
Very helpful Dana. You are such a motivator. xxxx
you and your method have been so helpful with decluttering my art studio! over 10 years of college art left to be dealt with later until whoops, the GIANT rack of shelves i had for all of it collapsed. i had been meaning to get to it but now i have no choice because the reality of the space is it all never really fit. that shelving unit was rated over 1000 lbs, how much did i have on there for it to bend? either way it's step 1 for now and already a ton of progress is happening. thank you!
Very helpful. Skip pink. You look best in jewel tones especially a nice medium to dark blue. Just saying. I finally gave up on pastels. I decluttered based on what colors look better and now I get so many compliments. It's weird but true. 😅
This is super helpful, thank you! What do you do when your kid’s stuff makes your head explode but they don’t want to get rid of it 😩?
Thank you I needed this today!
Brilliant!! Truly very helpful-thank you so much!
I'm just starting to watch this video, but I just had to stop and say how cute that pink shirt is on you!!
Thanks for your words of wisdom!!!
WOW! Head explosion idea will work for me...i think. No it will. I started looking around livingroom and saying go, go, go...
That is perfect advice thank you
Reid get a pink shirt! LOL
Yes, Reid, get a pink shirt!
2 brilliant points, Dana! I love 'em! G Ire
I think my issue is that I'm getting down to harder stuff - piles of paper where sorting takes a lot of time for little reward; going through areas where most of the clutter belongs to other family members and so I have to get their time to go through it, etc.
Me too!🫣🫣🙄
Such a great shirt!
I'm just so happy when I see new video from you. Follow pink shirts fan
Thanks so much! ❤
