I think there is a big club of us that hears Dana's voice saying "Do the dishes" as we actually do them after dinner and then still get pleasantly surprised each morning when we walk into a kitchen where we have an empty sink and clean counter where we can easily make breakfast! Such a difference from our "before Dana" lives!

I tell ya..this advice makes total sense. My Nana from Scotland died when I was 5. I am 70 now. And she said the same thing. I can remember pulling the chair up to the sink to help her do the dishes..I was the rinser..and she set the minute timer for 15 min. Before bed..make sure the dishes are done, and pick everything up...Dana, this is age old advice..and it works..getting up in the morning is better with a clean sink...
A friend gave me this bit of advice for when I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start: go into one room, and pick up and put away five things. Then move to the next room and do the same. After a few go-rounds you start to find fewer than five things, and you realize you're making progress. Maybe at this point you decide to carry on until one room after another no longer has anything for you to do there. Maybe after a few go-rounds you identify the room/area that badly needs your full attention, and you can set in to clear that area. Regardless of how you end up, this method will get you started, and, for some of us, getting started is the hard part.
We developed the habit of doing dishes daily WITHOUT FAIL during COVID when we were all at home (4 of us PLUS new baby). We learned super quick if we would get them done daily, it was SO much easier to keep a clean(er) kitchen and therefore clean(er) house. Those days helped us develop such a habit that when we all when back to school (both teachers), the habit stuck. IT WORKS, Y’ALL!! 🎉
Ahhh Dana, you're my girl. Thank you for the reminders. My son was home from school and I was recovering from a broken leg and we got very loosey-goosey. I'm sitting here today trying to get going and you pop up and you're like "remember, these 2 simple (yet life changing) habits". Yes. I can do these things! Thank you.
Gosh, one minute in and I'm already weeping, I've put you on to keep me company while I unload the dishwasher. My husband is away and he does pretty much all of the housework and I am struggling to keep up with it all. Just focusing on dishes, laundry and food for now, keeping your questions in mind as I go if I see any duh decisions, every little helps. I had another tidying person come up in my feed earlier and she was talking about decluttering for Christmas in an already immaculate room, and I just NOPEd straight out of there and came looking for you. Thank you for being here
It's good to see you and also a delight to view Reid's editing notes and additional footage at the end. No matter which expression you begin the video with the screen lights up!!
I always feel that if my kitchen and bathrooms are clean, then the rest can be a train wreck. I 'swipe and swirl' my bathrooms (Fly Lady fashion), and I do my dishes and wipe counters every day. ❤ your channel, Dana!
This is so helpful! I’m relieved to know that I’m not the only one who freezes when I’m overwhelmed. I have noticed that if the kitchen is under control I feel better, so I guess that’s my version of “do the dishes” 😜. Thank you so much for the reminder ❤️
Our youngest recently went back to college and he took a big load of his stuff back to his college dorm room with him - that has freed up space. Our oldest has moved back in with us temporarily and, of course, we now have his stuff, too. My husband's mom (late 80's) recently sent us a box of treasures including a folder or two filled with his old preschool and elementary school artwork. I'll select out a couple of the best pieces to incorporate into a family album I'm putting together and then toss the rest. Stuff just seems to come in and out of this house like an ocean tide.
I'm happy that you were able to take the summer off to be with your family! 🤩🥰 Thank you for the encouragement to get back on track. And yes! "Do the dishes". 😇
Wow! Today I decided enough is enough. Summer is over. It’s pouring the rain. I have been doing 5 min pickups throughout the day followed by mini reward rest sessions with TH-cam vids and look who shows up! 😃I’ll have dishes done and kitchen swept as soon as supper is over. I’ve “found” several misplaced things I needed and tossed a lot of trash. Where does it come from?? 😂😂 Excellent advice as always. Dishes and pickups truly are the best at jump starting further cleaning and decluttering. Welcome back Dana!! 🥰
I need to thank you for your books. I listened on audio when I went through a rough illness and treatment. Your info but also your voice was a comfort to me. (Great theater voice!)
Welcome back! Yes to doing dishes and trash. One thing I add is start a load of laundry. Feels like I’m working on something even if I’m just sitting down. 😊
Thank you, we had a family emergency and away from home for 3 weeks, everything piled up. And I was feeling like I had not gotten anywhere. This was very encouraging and thank you the pep talk!!
Haha! I just found out I'm pregnant with my fifth. The feeling of nausea when facing the kitchen just makes doing tge dishes that much more daunting. Oi. Trying to do a bit every day though whenever the morning sickness subsides.
Thanks to your tips and the way your reframed my thinking, I have been decluttering and organizing my apartment! Got my main closet done over Labor Day weekend. Took 3 full days but I went with your “if I don’t have room for it, can’t keep it” approach and it really helped! Thank you.
My kids have been back to school for two weeks and I'm just starting to feel like I'm getting a hand on things around here again. :) It's a process, but you've taught me so many skills that have helped me narrow it down to two weeks vs. months it would have taken a few years ago!
I'm glad to see you back! Your message always strikes a chord with me and your delivery is so engaging but... your editor is such a hoot that I look forward to the end of your videos! 😂😂
I started working on my basement this summer (24 years of stuff!) and I kept hearing you say "Look, look, always look!" for every box. Some things just got put back or with their like things, but some things could be condensed because we looked. It's not how I want it, but it is SO much better than when I started.
I got a cart that's like a table on wheels. Each evening I start at one end of the house and put "out of place" items on the cart. As I go through the house, I drop things off in their proper spots. I end in the laundry room, where I drop off dirty towels and start a load. Simple, but it really helps.
Yes, I am in a small house. Keep the kitchen neat. Load the dishwasher and do the hand washing pans. You are actually doing what I have found good for me. I really need to hard clean though. Thank you
Welcome Back 🦋 i managed to have a solid 2 weeks of go go go. I have been haphazard at consistency for the last year. my excuse: we got a puppy last October 🐕 Yesterday I got home from church & realized how dreadful my house became. I was close to tears & overwhelmed. Somehow or another, my subconscious had your steps in my head. I walked into my kitchen & heard your voice saying PICK UP TRASH. So that's what I did. I stepped back & looked. A bit better & my anxiety is lessening. PUT THINGS AWAY THAT HAVE A HOME. Put away the crackers & unused plastic utensils & dirty dish towels in the hamper & move the mail to the proper home. DO THE DISHES. I wash by hand. I set in some dishes to soak, stacked the rest beside the sink, wiped down the counters, & wiped a few crumbs from the floor. I stepped back, looked around. YES 😀 I was amazed at the results & finished the dishes calmly with no stress. It made so much easier to do a 5 minute pickup downstairs & call it GOOD. Your techniques are a life saver! Then I see this new video ** what a beautiful confirmation. Thank you for all you do and share.

Hoping you had a great summer! Congrats on empty nest! Video suggestion....I was a guest in a house, empty nesters. The guest room looked fine, but my dust allergy had a rough night. I am an empty nester, and realize that empty rooms still require some basic care to keep them fresh. Perhaps a gentle reminder? I've even used the Febreeze product designed to keep allergens at bay, after being made aware.
