  • As one of the most beautiful places on earth, Waipio Valley is also steeped in the history and culture of Hawaii. These are a few of many reasons why it is also a very popular site for tourists. Although, most of the tourists will only stop at the lookout on the top of the valley. To get down to the valley floor, you’ll either need 4-wheel drive vehicles, go through a tour, or be willing to hike down a very steep road that is 25% grade. After 5 days of delicious Hawaii food and shave ice, we needed to take that hike down. On our last trip to the Big Island, We took on the Super steep Waipio Valley Hike. This beast of a hill is totally worth the sweat though because it leads to a gorgeous black sand beach. We will definitely do this hike again!

Excellent. I have camped down there, several times. It's illegal today, but I took a tour vehicle down, had them drop me off, and I took the tour vehicle back up the following day. OR, you can hitch-hike.
Camping down there was like having paradise all to yourself. I walked naked on the beach at dawn and I took my morning shower in a smaller waterfall near the back of the valley.
I live here now, and the next time I go down there, I will link up with a local family, taro farmers, who will let me pitch my tent on their property. It really is paradise on earth, and spiritually sacred.

My wife and I made the hike down into the Valley in 2019. If they had taken the fork to the left and hiked about a mile back into the valley, they would have seen the Hi'ilawe Falls. Over 1,000 feet high and the inspiration for the famous Gabby Pahinui song Hi'ilawe. As he mentions, the hike down is difficult on the legs, but the hike out will get you your cardio for the day. We saw lots of young people that had walked down the road hitching rides back to the top, but we did the walk both ways. BTW - I was 66 years old at the time and my wife was 59.

You are absolutely right about capturing how steep this hill actually is!! My husband, sister, sister’s fiancé, and I took the challenge 3 years ago and let’s just say climbing UP was easier to hike backwards using our hamstrings than it was to walk forward. Facing forward felt more like climbing a step-less ladder!! Please do not attempt if you do not do resistant cardio training. Hahaha!!
Thanks for taking the time to record and share your experience!

I lived back in the valley in the early eighties for a couple months. If you get in to the back of the valley, there's a triple waterfall with about a 700 ft drop into a beautiful, swimmable pool. The valley is packed with fruit growing everywhere and good surf and fresh water fish. Really as close to paradise as I've been.

the locals SAY it’s about 30mins down and 40 minutes up. if you’re not super experienced i’d plan for double that, just in case. it was crazy when my fam and i went there a few years ago. most of us turned back halfway bc we were unprepared, not enough water and improper shoes.

We were there. Went a little bit to the left into the Valley, into the village, then turned back to the ocean side. We crossed the river, crossed the valley, returned back atop. We did not use the car. We did not destroy or damage anything. We did not do anything bad to some sacred signs or places we saw. I nearly expected to be insulted down there. It did not happen. If you are the US, be the US or fight for independence, not with tourists.
