Wow.... I've never seen Sori so moved by a piece of music before and have so much to say about it....... kudos to Vin for sitting there in silence and letting her unleash all those feelings verbally....... and yes beautiful song and beautiful video... Steven Wilson is an undisputable genius
Powerful reaction guys. Very rare and very much appreciated. I think Steven Wilson would appreciate the reaction and the response to this work of art. This is very much his forte. He is a real thinker and so many of his songs explore this kind of reality. As someone else already mentioned below, Drive Home - the official video and The Raven Who Refused to Sing - official video both come to mind if you think you can stand to explore his genius further where dealing with loss is explored so beautifully, so powerfully, so artistically. Appeciate your openness and honesty. Stay true and keep the Steven Wilson exploration going. You will not be dissappointed.
When composers write a song they think in each element and while lyric touch our mind, music touch our soul. In this piece they add a movie and this combination make us to live the situation. Behind all of this emotional react is a wonderful song, a realy masterpiece. Pure art. Congratulation since Brazil.
“Routine keeps me in line” is such a wonderfully crafted lyric describing a coping mechanism probably we all employ to some extent and in different contexts.
Written by Steven Wilson from the UK, where we don't have school shootings. The tragic part is when the mum messes the house up again, just so she can tidy it again.
From the rouitine video description: We need to give credits to the video director "Amongst the hundreds of songs I have written over the years, 'Routine' has a very special place. It's a deeply sad story of loss and denial, but at its conclusion the clouds lift and there is acceptance at least. Having worked with her on 3 previous videos, I knew as soon as I wrote it that it was perfect for Jess to do something amazing with. Even then nothing prepared me for the organic beauty and power of the film she made, a painstaking labour of love that took her months to produce. When we play the song live I look out into the audience and see people swept away with emotion at the combination of music and animation. To find poetry and beauty in sadness is a wonderful thing I think" - Steven Wilson Directed by Jess Cope"
Guys…. what can I say…. thank you so much for your response. It wasn’t easy, but you did reflect, you thought about it, and you shared these thoughts with us. That’s good, that’s wonderful. Thank you so much! I guess that if this song invites us to reflect, the song did its job, but so did you. I respect that, I really do! I like to mention Jess Cope and her team at Owl House Studio in the UK, who made this animation, a true piece of art. There is also another version of this song, where you can see the band plays this somg (I suppose as sound check) in an empty Royal Albert Hall. This ist one song of the hole concept album. The concept album finds its inspiration in the life and death of Joyce Carol Vincent and the documentary about her, "Dreams Of A Life," which Wilson was both fascinated and shocked by. In 2003, the young woman disappeared unnoticed by family and friends until her decomposed body was found in her London apartment two years later. But "Hand. Cannot. Erase." finds its own protagonist and tells its own story. The end is not death. Rather, the main character is lost in the hectic hustle and bustle of our days. She disappears and fades away.
I love you guys. I come back to this song every once in a while… it’s so beautiful and at the same time so hard to listen to. People who are not parents can’t understand this. Vin… I feel the same way…. How the F can you go on?
Oh no. I mean oh yeah because this is one of the best songs of all time, but oh no because it's gonna hurt. Like I can only imagine the pain this song taps into for someone with kids.
it's just crushing, isn't it? it's a disgrace. we need to elect people who will help fix this. oh, and the music's epic. the off-beat time, 5/8, and everything else... I think it's one of my favourite SW songs. plus the video. it's just gut-wrenching. something's gotta change, you're right. gun culture is SICK.
For newbies, this woman has lost her husband and 2 kids in a school shooting, but, she continues her "Routine" of everyday life as if they are not gone. Steven Wilson is a genius lyricist. Animator Jess Cope almost lost her mind creating this stop motion animation for this video, she worked on it for a year!! She lost her marriage and her mind for some time. She is OK now. Sacrifices made this video happen. Only the female reacted to this video, could the guy be more stoic?
Wilson specifically structured the song so that each section represents one of the different stages of grief
brilliant work in every aspect.
Heartbreaking but beautiful. A masterpiece. Greetz from Belgium.
One of the best songs ever written, I think.
Especially in combination with the video.

Thank you for (finally) uploading this ❤
Yeah, wonder why it took them 2 years after recording to upload it.
I see so many different emotions. Anger, Fear, Sadness, Exhaustion, Grief, Faint and so much more. What a great song and video.

Don’t ever let go, try to let go. What a gut wrenching truth about moving on, or not.
That’s a difficult one, but Dive Home is at even another level

You've forgotten about the Dunblane massacre?
@@petermoran7951 we had 1 school shooting 28 years ago, banned guns and haven't had one since
@stesrad and the fact that the US gun murder rate is 4 per 100,000 and the UK is 0.013 per 100,000, that's not because we can't get guns either is it?
@stesrad 29 people killed by guns in the UK last year, compared to over 40,000 in the US
It's about time you react to a Steven Wilson song.

I will watch any Steven Wilson (or one of his side bands) you react to. He is the best out there in todays age
