@Dragon Fruit Dude, the material you forgot to mention also done by other people are, burlap covering the post areas for the airial roots to cling to& climb as well -the goal to train the stems to shoot straight up the post as fast as it's able from growth?.
@pauhy5601 - thanks! Actually I mention it - as well as Della - here in this video: th-cam.com/video/JsOTVCpHCKw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LqGgvSrIny3IXxt- it’s 5 improvement to this design!
Great concept. Agree, you want the trellis to be clean looking in your garden. Great video and new subbie as I keep getting ppl donate cuttings. It’s just wrong to adopt plss as Mrs and not look into how to grow them. Thankyou for a great video. 🌵🌵🌵👏🏻👏🏻
Good idea. However, the Simpson post cap at the bottom of the post connecting to the bricks is not intended to provide a moment connection. That’s your weak link in your trellis.
@@danielsiapin hmm interesting, this would prevent moisture from damaging the 4x4 (if we screwed 2 2x4’s together). I like the top 2x4’s as wood because I would like to reduce microplastics in my soil as much as possible. So I guess that’s the trade off, microplastics vs wood vs brick and brackets. We already have plastic containers, so I guess I’m getting my daily plastic dosage from there anyway…
You way over thought this … yeah you never ever put wood into the soil. It will rot off in a couple years. Just about the time your plant gets huge… then you’re got a bigger problem … Your weak point is where the Simpson metal bracket is with those screws… don’t care what they say they will corrode off … Opps …. I’d use the PVC 4”x4” square for my upright… drill and run 1” PVC pipe (any size) thru the bottom at 90 degrees … you only need two … one top … one bottom … that will keep the upright post from rocking … then use 2”x4”’s as your top … but use two that will fit inside of that 4” upright and screw attach to your top wood frame… pour your PVC 4” upright full of concrete or just fill with gravel … leave about 1foot or more un filled from the top so you can slide your 2x4’s down inside … Use deck screws to attach if you must … your sized tub look adequate… use a 25-30 short tub … Keep your trellis height at no more than 5 feet tall … or you’ll be on a ladder both pollenating and trying to pick fruit. As your DF branches grow upright just use plastic roll garden tape to secure the growth… When/after your growth grows up-out-over the top of your trellis it’s going to want to grow upright… You want your plant to mushroom over the top. To do this get some large 2” steel washers (anything will work, but you need some weight) the large steel washers come with holes … use an old tee shirt … rip you some strips … one overhand knot thru the washer and one overhand knot around the DF branch as to train the branch over … I’ve been there and done that … go on TH-cam and view … Kim Phan Dragon Fruit videos. … she has several of my tasty hybrids … enough for now …
Hey @TimHoSD, I want this trellis to last >10 years. I didn’t want any wood to be in the water + dirt because over those 10 years the wood will break down. So I tired to find a solution where wood did not touch wet soil.
Amazing . Appreciate

Uh-oh...hopefully it will survive being top heavy..
They make 2x4 out of plastic. Check ewing irrigation or siteone.

Hi, why not use cedar or redwood for the 4x4 and 2x4 legs? Save the $ and times.
