Great video. Sucks that all the bearings are shot, although we kind of knew with all the metal shavings in the oil. Looking forward to more vids on the cb and cx. Cheers.
just to give you a note, your intro video, sound balance to audio of actual footage is significantly off. When i see your video's i always need to adjust audio due to it. Not sure if it is a bother or noticed by others, but just wanted to let you know. The Bike builds look great, keep up the good work.
i have a bike same as yours. my piston had to be re sleeve. and my valve shims are loose so i made some udjustment. shes running now. but the stator need to be replaced coz its not charging waiting for the parts i order from ebay. hope i can finished mine before you do lols.
I know its been two years and I love this series, but wonder if you could answer a question. I have an 82 CB750 spare motor with great compression but otherwise unknown condition. I heard in your video that the rotor bolt was stripped, so is mine, what did you do to fix that? Did you add a helicoil to the crank end? Not sure what I can do to fix that. I also think I will remove the oil pan to inspect whats in there, the motor sat for some time and has some murky looking oil that obviously had a bit of water. Thanks again for the series!
It was the thread in the rotor that was stripped not the crank. There's a 17mm thread inside to lever the rotor away from the tapered end of the crank, so I had to use a puller instead. If the thread in your crank is gone that's a different (and big) job. Would be a machinists job to fix that or even a new crank.
You think the motor was ran dry or a oil pump failure at one point in its life to wipe out those bearings? I know this a old video but I'm watching your whole series on the CB. It's one of the bikes I've always wanted.
Oil pump was luckily ok when measured everything and tested the flow to the cams. it was however the oil strainer that was filled with all sorts of mess. horrible.
Hey man, love your channel, recommend it to every rider I meet. Thanks for all the work you put into this. Do you have professional experience rebuilding/working on engines, or just have a manual and balls of steel? Hahahaha. Awesome to see the engine wide open.
The shavings are more then likely coming from the timing chain slapping the sides of the jug section. I bought a 79 750 and it had rubbed enough to wear a hole through it and leaked oil out. the bottom half of the case had metal slung everywhere in it.
Hi great vids keep it up!! Im doing a cb750 build myself and use your vids for guidance so thank you ...I have a question...where did you buy your crank half shell bearings?
Another great vid. You briefly mentioned the rotor...mine on a CB550 had rust to the point the cover was tough to get off. I’ve cleaned it up with naval jelly but there is some pitting. Any concerns or should I consider replacing? Can I coat/paint before reinstalling and retain functionality?
Thanks. Is it the cover itself or did the rotor have rust? If it's the cover (having oxidation being aluminium) then clean it and it'll come new. If your rotor is in a bad state I'd say replace it as you can't paint that, it wouldn't function.
I'm working on a DOHC too. Trying to split the crankcases but the alternator rotor refuses to let go. You also had a stuck rotor? Did you use a 3-jaw puller? The puller bolt I have doesn't seem to work. The rotor seems stuck really bad. Any issues with using a 3jaw to get it off (I heard it can break the rotor)?
Yeah you have to take he rotor off and DONT use a 3 arm puller unless you know the rotor is bad and you need to replace it as it will crack. Just patience and a puller bolt is all you need and it will release. Remember it’s been there for nearly 40 years so it will take time to let go
Would be great to have a longer film (1) disamble motor (2) repair/reasamble motor. Fever cuts. Doeasnt matter if the movie is 2h... See each step. Thanks for good productions.
do you have a face book account? so we can share some ideas in our build. love your series. it inspire me to build my own when i saw your gs way back then. so i save my money to buy my cb. and now i know how dificult it is hahaha. by the way im from the philippines
Does it matter how many miles on a bike for wear on internal engine parts or does it usually just come down to how good it was maintenanced by the previous owner?
A well maintained engine will last you a lifetime with the basic work needed. I think this bike was abused and left to run without oil changes etc. The oil stank so bad inside it.
Hello, good to see you back I have a question, it would be wonderful if you could help I’m building a 1987 CB750 cafe racer project, and the bike needs a motor starter/relay, and the spare parts of this beast is not available since i live in egypt, the question is, is there any newer model that has a similar starter or alternative? Thanks you in advance. 😊
The solonoid should be the same, and I would guess that the starter probably hasn't changed much in models, but without further research I couldn't say.
It needs a lot more than washing unfortunately, it's covered with a horrible silver paint, so whilst the engine's in bits I can slowly take that off ready to be primed.
I really missed the vids, thank God you're still alive
Thanks, still alive.
Unreal video again mate. Great to have you back.
Thanks, good to be back.
Really enjoying seeing this bike take shape, keen to see the GS running soon!
Thanks, GS next week, exhaust wrap ordered.
Nice to see you back at it!
Good to be back.
Great video. Sucks that all the bearings are shot, although we kind of knew with all the metal shavings in the oil. Looking forward to more vids on the cb and cx. Cheers.
Worth changing and / or checking even with the crank case split.

Great work as always ! We’ve missed your videos man !
Thank you :)

Great video and super helpful ! Is it possible to split the cases without removing the oil pump?
Unfortunately not, it has to come off. Along with the rotor

Excellent, thanks for spreading the word. I have experience of engines & building but not on a professional level.

Luckily that section was fine but the crank shells are all worn. Unfortunately though they need changing.
Hi great vids keep it up!! Im doing a cb750 build myself and use your vids for guidance so thank you ...I have a question...where did you buy your crank half shell bearings?
You could try Dime City Cycles.

@@forthebold appreciate the reply

Good call, I tried to chunk these into easy to digest parts as simply as I could think of the engine in stages, but good idea.
Yeah!!! Finally got my fix.
Great stuff, another one today.
Just curious, what method do you use to keep your bolts organized when you remove them?
I put each set into a sandwich bag of their own, and label them
Also for the parts that are just coming off and not being touched (e.g.) cam shaft brackets, I leave them in and place in order.

For The Bold - dreegez good to know, just justifies it more to do a full rebuild on the engine. 👍
Hello, good to see you back
I have a question, it would be wonderful if you could help
I’m building a 1987 CB750 cafe racer project, and the bike needs a motor starter/relay, and the spare parts of this beast is not available since i live in egypt, the question is, is there any newer model that has a similar starter or alternative?
Thanks you in advance. 😊

For The Bold - dreegez thanks a lot man, I’ll try it from a newer model, hopefully it would fit
Keep rocking 👍🏼
how many miles did this have on it?
I think about 36,000, but was a poor repair job before and silicone had blocked up the oil
For The Bold thanks I think I’m going to rebuild mine for the ease of mind
How many Miles did this engine have?
I think this had 14,000
Nice Video, Like your Work. Keep it Up😊👊
Thank you.
Why didn't you washed the engine before openning it? It's not a criticism, simple curiosity.
It needs a lot more than washing unfortunately, it's covered with a horrible silver paint, so whilst the engine's in bits I can slowly take that off ready to be primed.
