When I got to visit Helsinki for the first time a few years ago I was afraid of how Finns are characterized : reserved, shy, don't like to talk/interact much. Quite the other way around : nice and they do like to talk, they especially want to know what you think about Finland, if you like it so far, and so on. It's impossible to get lost in Finland ,random Finns on streets are happy to give directions if you ask. Also Finns are very humble and insecure when they need to speak in another language. I can speak a bit of Finnish and I was speaking both languages combined with our landlord. He understood everything I was telling him in English but he was replying in Finnish. But when I first heard him speak English... he put my English skills to shame, yet he was the one insecure and ashamed of his skills and claiming that " he doesn't speak English that well" and wasn't sure that I will understand him...at that point I was wondering if he ever understood MY English.

I used to mess with Finns by first make eye contact and then smile like you just won the lottery. They would look rather disturbed look around and then usually try to walk faster from me . Tho it's so true, once you make a Finn-friend, they are devoted

Do you always find the nicest people in the street? :D all these people gave a really nice positive vibe. That lady with the red top seemed especially sweet. :">

I agree with the not wanting to talk if you don't know how to speak perfectly. I feel that way with my Finnish. I understand Finnish and I know I could speak it fluently since I did as a child but living in America, I don't get to practice much. So I revert to being really quiet when I come to Finland.

One of your interviewees was my high school music teacher, she was great and taught me loads of new things about music in general. I was always looking forward to the lessons, so much fun! 🎶🎹😄

This was so sweet. And the guy in the grey tank top was really cute. In general I feel like living in Finland would suit me well, I love my private space and its getting constantly invaded in Germany. Lol

We were in Espoo in April and I asked a woman in the grocery store if what I was holding was creamer for coffee, I do not read or speak Finnish. She seemed very annoyed and gave me a look like I was really rude for asking her a question. Everyone else was very kind, my family and I loved Finland.

All of them gave us nice tips. However I have noticed some weird behaviours of Finns. To mention some examples

I always open doors for Finns and half of them don't even blink. Like I don't exist or it was a magical genie opening the alibaba cave or wut!!! 😓

One thing I noticed when I was in Helsinki and found kinda rude was, that Finns dont move to get out of your way and you actually have to ask. Its not like that in Germany. For example, when i would leave a store, someone would be standing outside in the doorway and look at me and just stand there. Obviously I want to get by, but they wouldn't move and I actually had to say "Excuse me" and then they finally realized it and moved a little so I could squeeze by. This happened to me several times during my trip, in different variations (stores, sauna changing room, hotel,...).

I must mention the expression "rally english". It is spot on. Otherwise I can spot a Norwegian speaking English when they say "Liverpyyl" instead of Liverpool.

Thanks you for this insightful video. One of your participants said it’s annoying when people don’t use correct bicycle rules. My country of origin does not have such an amazing bicycle culture and well developed facility - if you ride a bike in many - especially 3rd world -countries it’s at your own peril and survival is your aim. I would love to follow the rules but I don’t know what they are. Can you make a video on the topic of road safety?

I agree with the two guys sitting on the bench. I have noticed too many times that even at the university (on average) the Finnish guys are rude with the door opening. They open the door for themselves and do not care if someone is behind them. For instance, they do not know (or care) how to behave a bit more gentleman with women in that respect. A guy can be a good looking one but this does not necessarily correlate with his manners at all!. It can scare one :(.
