I went and bought the vypyr 30 a few years ago and have to say it is the best and funnest amp i've ever owned. I've owned Marshalls, Fenders, MXR BOSS EFFECTS. This amp does it all.
great video sir! As a huge Van Halen fan, i must say i got this amp last night and i just finished playing, the sun just came up, and i dont want to stop! you explained everything so proper and thoroughly!! Ive played a sterling axis before but im looking online right noiw at them!!!! thank you sir!
Wow as a (now old blue-collar & gear-collecting) guit player, I'm sooo GLAD that I sat through your full vid-pres. Your channelling of Eddie was fuckin' awesome my friend! I should apologize for the swearingly-accurate expletive, but I won't. I've slowly bought so many different guitars, pedals and amps over the years, slowly, incrementally, and without wifey/kids, that I've lost my way tone-wise (did I mention that I'm a lefty? dudn't matter)). Thank you for showing the Vypyr-60 - I have a Vypryr-30 setting 5-ft away for the last 8 yrs that sounded great at the time (i'm sure it still does of course) - I got trapped into the whole tech-rework thing back then and mechanically-re-engineered the footswitch deal on my Sanpera II pedal. Once I had conquered that simple-problem for barefooted folk, I had moved on once again between varying bouts of g.a.s./a.a.s. and depression/back-to-alright. Anyway, thanks again for the phenomenal playing and use of REAL attainable gear for non-management folks here in Uh-mur-ka (a.k.a.,USA) Cheers & Beers my Friend :)
These are great ideas. Great lesson. I'd get the Peavey Bandit which has the same analog circuitry and yet doesn't have the multiple stomp box and rack effects or amp effects. Yet, you can get tube like tone with it because they have the patent technology for that. They are the best amps I've seen that are SS that work like a tube amp and respond sorta of like a tube amp. You're viewers or fans won't notice and it's a lot easier on the wallet and maintenance is zero compared to a tube amp. Although I love tube amps for sure. Then just get the pedals you need and hook up to the effects loop.. Thanks for this video big time!
Nice riffs. And that Peavy sounds legit. I had the non tube Vyper but didn't use it much and sold it. I have two Krank amps now though. But I'm interested in that Peavy Transtube
From the description; "how to get the sound and tone of Eddie Van Halen on a budget!" Demonstrated on £1700 worth of gear! Most kids have a £200 guitar, a £100 Amp and £100 worth of pedals. Demonstrate the EVH tone on something like that and I'd be very impressed. I'm not sure that doing the same on the best part of 2K's worth of kit is "budget". But otherwise an interesting video.
@@edmotler2115 well the smaller version of the vypir was 170€ in 2012 ;) I don’t remember the bigger version retail but that was not 1700£ by any mean ,the sterling was 500 new at the time if im correct
@@christianpucciarelli The price for the amp and guitar are in the video. The 4 pedals have always been pricey, although unsurprisingly I don't have a record of costs from back in the day. But my total costs at the time add up fine.
I owned marshalls fenders mxr pedals rack effects and wireless sytems GOT RID OF THEM ALL. seen this video bought the vypyr 30. This amp is by far the funest amp to play. I worked with Ed at NAMM and use the musicman you can even get the cathedral delay. This amp is LOUD also. Everything on board the tone is awesome everythin is fully editable. Plus its analoged wired for stompboxes and digital for rack stuff
9 or 3 O'Clock? Depends on how you look at it. For sure, EVH set it approximately 1/4 the way up from its lowest setting (yes, 9 O'Clock to me too). He also used a delay, and a reverb. For some songs/parts a flanger. That amp did not sound good to me. I already made the mistake of buying cheap modeling amps and ,yes, they get you somewhere kinda close, but once you play a real tube amp... you realize its just nowhere close. It really does affect play-ability and the overall dimension of the sound. Then try to play with a drummer. Game over.
Thanks for this, it's been a huge help in nailing that, most elusive of tones. After playing for more years than I can mention I am guilty of playing with far too much gain. I was genuinely surprised how much more sensitivity and expression I can pull out of my guitar now, and much much more tone. Nice one Jamie.
you say that to switch the parameters you push the amp button? I think that when you push the amp button it just makes the sound of that amp louder or with more gain right?
What Happened to the chorus and Echo Plex Delay ? I nail his tone with Real tube Reverb. With a Peavey Ultra Plus 120 all tube head withe Spring Reverb on one side, and a Fender Blues JR Amp all tube through A 4x12 30 watt Celestion Speakers on Both Amps. And a Donner Alpha Force. Killer EVH Tone.
Another thought for "Know it alls" You can get a great EVH brown sound from a Vypyr or even a Vox VT+ series amp if you simply modify them with a $3.00 radio shack 1/4 inch female out jack running into a cheap passive 12 or 15 inch monitor. Go buy a hundred dollar stock OLP axis MM1 guitar. The result almost sounds like the old Plexi 50s. Oh, it helps if you're a GOOD guitar player too
excellent appraisal. I've had a lot of trouble getting the delay articulation sounding okay...... but I haven't tried the DD7. Do you think it's more the 800ms or the type of delay? [I think he used the maestro didn't he?]
I can agree with the guy. That guitar is a mid price one with a kick ass sound for all of you Van Halen fanatics!! Actually I've been using it in a Van Halen Tribute band for a little while, noe I'm selling the guitar for 850 euros, I've made a couple of upgrades to it like installing an original floyd rose and the D-tuna. See you boyz!!
Eddie's playing was all in his hands. And his picking was yes a lot of attack. If you had a chance to see the replica Frankenstrat (well they say it's the exact replica) look at the pickup. It has grooves from the strings just slamming on it all the time. Which goes to say he really played the SH*t out of that guitar and dug pretty deep when picking.
So Sterling is to Ernie Ball Music Man what Squier is to Fender -- a budget version of a more pricier line of guitars? Is it stock or were some mods done to it?
sounz ok but does the guitar have stainless frets i wear my frets down to the wood really fast. and where can i get stainless frets if not. does the floyd rose have the thicker block to give u the sustain
I find that that you can get a better Van Halen tone in my opinion if you use the "plxi" model on red with the tube screm stomp box effect. And mess arund with the EQ.

Eds sound was the Marshall, a bone stock 67 super lead. No extra tubes, variacs, etc.. This is not even close.. It was known to eat output transformers, so there was something unusual, post the phase inverter.
