Ed using his signature musicman and this gear is probably my favourite tone and I love early VH but For Unlawful and Balance had a fantastic big and full sound that nobody else could achieve. RIP Ed 👑
If my memory serves me well he used the OG 5150 and his trusty old Plexi on Balance. I have the Guitar World magazine somewhere where he went through the gear he used on that album. On ’The Dream Is Over’ he used the prototype of the 5150. Again from Guitar World’s interview around the time F.U.C.K. came out.

So called "Purists" hates me for it but Balance and F.U.C.K are my favourite VH albums. It's something with the song writing that just feels deep and comple on those albums. And the tone is Fat with a lot of string. True masterpieces Really fine work! Thanks for the video.

I was lucky enough to see the Balance tour. It was fucking phenomenal. Sound across the board was pure perfection. Whatever was going on behind the scenes sure didn't translate to the stage. When they played Feelin, holy shit. EVH at his absolute most insane live playing. The KING, for damn good reason.
Oh man that’s so cool! I managed to see them only once in Helsinki, Finland back in the day with Gary Cherone and man it was (still)so good! They pretty much played DLR - era songs and a few from the 3 👌.

It was absolutely EPIC that’s when during Ed’s solo he did that third stone from the sun thing shit blew my mind! First time I got to see VH was on the F.U.C.K tour 2/15/92 in Huntsville AL because my parents wouldn’t let go in 86 but my brother and cousin got to go because I was only 11 years still haven’t forgave them for that! lol 🤟🏻

Finally a video that totally describes how to do it, i tried it and love it thank you, i have a w/d/w rig with the roland sde3000 and a lexicon pcm70 and 3 cabs but always wanted to do it with just plugins and amp plugins and this nails it, please make more video of how to do the F.U.C.K sound in the daw and maybe some early van halen album sounds. I had a similar tone running an ADA MP-1, tc electronic 1210, and intellifex into a Mesa power amp and 2 cabs. Sound was big wide and epic...Ahhhh those were the days.... Really enjoy your videos, thanks for taking the time to research and post this stuff.

The dimension D is brilliant for live use if your singing and using stereo Iem’s, during the parts your singing when you have dimension on if completely gets guitar out of the way of you vocals but at the same time sounds huge in your ears!

Great breakdown Euge! Was the Greenback IR done with a SM57? I tried to replicate your process and noticed that it made a difference in the wideness of the sound when panning two mics hard left and right instead of splitting one mic and panning it - it sounded great either way, just something I noticed… don’t know why though.

Harmonizer makes perfect sense for a one guitar band without doubled guitar parts. Especially thinking about how the first VH songs had the guitar panned to just one speaker. I usually prefer raw, unprocessed guitar tones, but always liked the Balance tone. You really nailed it! Amsterdam is actually one of my favorite Eddie guitar parts-- super catchy. Just wasn't a fan of Sammy's "Wham Bam" lyrics.
Hey Euge. Always love your vids. Think it might have been one of your previous EVH ones where I saw this but didn't Eddie often use a micropitch pedal around this time? I always loved the F.U.C.K. and Balance tone but couldn't figure out what the missing ingredient was. When I saw the micropitch being used, it all fell into place. Maybe all in one micropitch pedals didn't exist at this time and modern ones are just a simpler way to get the same effect Eddie did using the eventide harmoniser? Or maybe he did use one and told the interviewer something else! Wouldn't be the first time Eddie mislead people on what he uses 😉
Thanks! I don’t think micropitch pedals existed back in those days 😎. Eventide was / and still kinda is the way to go. But obviously you can achieve similar results with other things as well. I mean the only thing it needs to do well is to change the pitch just a few cents. IMO Eventide does it the best. They pretty much invented the whole thing - or at least were the first company to put out one in the 70s = the OG harmonizer, which actually didn’t perform that well but the H949 works like a charm. Probably that’s why Ed started to use that and switched to H3000 when Eventide released that in the late 80s if I remember correct.
I live in Nashville Tennessee. If he moved here he would work 8 days a week. He’s just that versed of a guitarist. The studios would have him on speed dial as a session guy.

Killer song! You nailed that tone. Interesting how you achieved it. It does sound to me like there is a chorus pedal on it. Of course, the Flanger is obvious, but also sounds really good. A subtle harmonizer and phaser can also sound like a chorus to me.

Did you ever think that when you decided to play guitar for a living, that one day, you'd be paying your bills by plugging your guitar into a computer (that's plugged into another computer), then talking into a camera (that's more of a computer) that's also hooked into your computer, then sending it via some freak-technology called the internet connected to your computer...to someone else who's doing the *exact same thing* on their end who's located 4K miles away??? I'll be the first one to admit that when I started playing it was for hot women, and a bar tab. Looking back, that actually seems admirable in many ways to what we have going on today. But I digress..... Carry on, sir! 🤘

@@EugeValovirta230V got mine since 1999.. at that time most of the owners of the head use to play with marshall cabinet or other V30 cabinet.. I didn't realize it was hard to find now... I confess that I prefer my Hesu Cabinet.. I probaly need to try this sheffield speakers again and again.. thanks for reply and for your channel! all the best for 2022!!
