@@AlexisSamone I know, it's unbelievable! To do what she did, that young. Every time I am watching this performance, I think of what I was doing when I was 21. :) Jokes aside, she had set the ultimate standard for generations of singers to try to follow, and she was a girl. What a powerhouse.
And yes, it is true, she is so sweet and humble. I am utterly happy that I had a chance to meet her and listen to her live. Long live Jennifer!
I know people who actually saw her live on Broadway, neither knowing the other and they all said that her voice was so powerful, the whole theater was vibrating. They all said that people were crying uncontrollably, fainting and in the aisles like they were in church. My music teacher has heard some of the greatest voices to ever walk the planet and she said that she had seen Dreamgirls on Broadway 3 times and swear that there will be nobody who could sing this song like Jennifer Holiday. She was that mind blowing.
Jennifer is an Icon and no one can over rule her with his performance!

I love your observation about the pacing. I was lucky enough to see this show on broadway almost 30 times, and the pacing was part of the magic. the lights would start to dim in the house. as it became totally dark that cowbell would strike up at that quick pace, the bass guitar would come in, then the lead guitar, a voice would introduce the stepp sisters at the talent show in the darkness, and LIGHTS UP! HERE WE GO! that cowbell tempo didn't stop until the curtain came down at the end of act one. There I was, catching my breath. And I was forever changed. Nothing lit my fire like that original production of DREAMGIRLS. That original cast vocally was fully on another level. EVERYBODY sang like a star. The Stepp Sisters, the two women who quit from jimmy early at the beginning Joanne and Charlene, Marty, Jimmy, Curtis, CC, of course all 3 women, plus Michelle, and on and on and on. there has never been anything like it.
To this day, it is the greatest thing I have ever seen. It is the greatest experience I have ever had in the theatre. And I spent my life in the theatre. I used to joke to friends that whenever the lights would begin to go down for almost any other show I was at-i had to always fight my thoughts of "why isn't this DREAMGIRLS?" and I have seen so many magnificent things, I have been very lucky, but wowie wow-this show-this show. It defined what theatre could be for me. great reaction! thanks for posting!

This song is what made Jennifer. This song isn’t for the weak voices. You have to have a voice with weight to pull this off. I don’t know if you’ve seen it but there’s a beauty pageant contestant who attempts this and its….well let’s just say she should have chosen a song by maybe Doris Day. Very few people should attempt this song. It’s very vocally demanding.
Ha no, I haven’t but I shall look it up. It is definitely a song for the seasoned singers who know how to navigate their voices and even more, know how to story tell! Vocal stamina on this song is mad crazy
The song (as well as the character Effie) jennifer Holliday (with the help of Jennifer Lawrence) CREATED the character. And the song itself was literally built around her voice. So she is literally the staple of the song because the song is her.

@@nesq4104 I am a fighter for the underdog and even more so for the forgotten one who makes it incredibly easy for the next one to get all the praise and glory even tho they opened all the doors (hence my "hate" to most Internet gangsters about about Jhud in comparing tamyra (for example).
@@tamyragraypromotions1678 people compare for the wrong reasons and no real criteria. I'm always fighting people online who compare singers to patti labelle saying they are better yet use videos of her singing in her 60s and 70s against some singer in their 30s or so. It's so laughable. They would never use anything from 55 and younger. Lol. And also wrong voice type comparisons and singing styles. I feel current generation is about instant gratification and hands out titles to anyone, plus is poor in research. But to your point on Jennifer Holliday basically creating Effie, I only learned this the past few Years from a jennifer holliday interview yet I not sure if I can even find any major article on dreamgirls giving her that credit. That's why I fear she can be erased from its history and why she's still publicly fighting for the acknowledgement. It's always told that it's based on the Supreme and Florence Ballard.
She's a beast! No other way to describe her. Just got back from vacay & I'm in a fog. Wanted a cup of coffee & I could not remember how to operate the coffee machine. Listened to this right here & woke right up! Thank you for this & all you do. Putting in the hard work will get you to 5K in no time & we're all here for it.

Right! I believe it. When she did “strain”, it was always a vocal choice like when she squeezes her vocal folds to get out a begging type of sound. Magical🤩
