  • I was a passenger on the inaugural commercial Airbus A380 super-jumbo flight on Singapore Airlines. Flight SQ380 from Singapore to Sydney. October 25, 2007. All seats were auctioned for charity through a special eBay auction and I was a lucky bidder. A big media event, truly a special day in aviation history.

I used to live in Singapore when I was a kid and will always remember when my parents took me to go see this first a380 flight take off. Great memories. I remember thinking the plane was going to overrun as it took so much of the runway to take off. I was so excited to see such a large plane take off. I have been fortunate enough to fly the a380 many times since that moment. Sadly I don’t live in Singapore anymore and I have moved back to my home country of Australia. A380 will always be one of the most amazing aircraft of all time and certainly my favourite.

80s Music as you saw in the video, the passengers on the plane were getting nervous about the long takeoff roll. Once we were finally airborne it was a fun and memorable flight. Sadly that aircraft has already been scrapped after only 10 years in service.

Kris Trexler it saddens me that this aircraft is dying as I always felt more comfortable flying on 4 engine planes, and they always had this charm to me that 2 engine planes didn’t.

This A380 was sent to the scrapyard after only 10 years in service! That's unheard of for a modern jetliner, especially one this costly. The market for second hand A380s in practically nil. Bummer...it's a great airplane

Did you have anything to do with the Krisworld system that was mentioned in this video? Just wondering since the spelling was the same as you spell your name.

+tallboyyyy Haha no, that's a coincidence. Singapore Airlines calls their inflight entertainment KrisWorld, their inflight magazine is SilverKris and their frequent flyer program is called KrisFlyer. The "kris" is a sword or dagger indigenous to the Malay culture of Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. I was amused to see my given name used so many ways by Singapore Airlines.

+Kris Trexler I kind of figured it was a coincidence but I know you work in the television industry so I thought maybe there's something to it. It looks like a beautiful plane but unless the airlines start flying them from New England to Florida I'll probably never get to fly on one.

+tallboyyyy There's no chance an A380 will be used for a short flight. It's actually an inefficient 4 engine airplane that's only profitable for airlines when it's 85% full. Very few airlines are profitable with this plane and no new orders have been received for several years. Don't be surprised if it goes out of production by the end of the decade. Airlines prefer 2 engine airplanes which are less costly to buy and fly. I like the A380 but it's a sales dud...the Edsel of airplanes (and just as ugly on the outside). Have a look at my Emirates A380 first class flight...complete with onboard shower. th-cam.com/video/J1OqqQ8hBXk/w-d-xo.html

    And retired already

Andrew that first A380 is a hand-wired oddball, with several other quirks that make it unappealing in the second hand market. An operator willing to fly it can get another 15-20 years of service. But it seems there is no market for used A-380s...or new ones for that matter.

This first A380 was retired after 10 years in service, not 11. The aircraft has been stored outdoors in a dry storage location in Europe. The company that leased this A380 to Singapore Airlines is looking for a second hand buyer, but so far there is zero market for used A380s.
This first aircraft was virtually hand-built and was troublesome in service. The wiring loom is non-standard, making it virtually impossible to reconfigure the aircraft for any seating arrangements other than SQ's original proprietary seat plan. The engines have been removed and are available to airlines as spares if needed.
It's very likely this A380 will be scrapped. An early prototype A380 used by Airbus for testing and certification has been (or will be) donated to a museum. So far it seems the A380 has no secondary market. It's a wonderful aircraft to fly in as a passenger, but not desirable by most airlines. Expensive to acquire, expensive to fly, expensive to maintain, hard to fill with passengers, and no secondary resale market. As good as the A380 is, it's the Edsel of aviation.
