I've been using the Surface Pro X for a week now. I use it for editing office documents, email, web browsing. Nothing too intensive but always mobile. I've found the Pro X to be easier to use in a Windows environment than an iPad, battery life really good and the build quality to be excellent. I don't think the Pro X is a mistake.. I think its misunderstood.
Purchased an SPX (SQ1, 8 ram, 128 ssd) for only $623US and absolutely love it! 1. Battery life is 50% longer than my SP7 (i7, 16 ram, 256 ssd). I get between 12-13 hours of continuous TH-cam viewing (40% brightness, BlueTooth off, Wifi and Power Saver on). This is on par with my 15-inch 360x HP Spectre and its battery is twice as large. 2. The screen is bigger and brighter. I can read/watch video in a dark room with 0% brightness. Larger screen is also great for reading/annotating PDFs. 3. It is thinner/easier to hold, so it's much better for notetaking/watching videos on your lap than the SP7. 4. Runs all my must-have work apps including Office 2019, statistical software, Zoom, Nebo, Snapdrop, ReadAloud, and PDF apps. The only "nice to have" apps I can't run so far are BatteryBar and Throttlestop (which has a 32-bit version) 5. Charges much faster than my SP7 6. Has a Sim Card slot 7. Keyboard is 1/2 price on Amazon 8. SP7 pen works on SPX Negatives are: 1. No USB-A (dongle life) 2. No microSD slot 4. MS's 64-bit emulator greatly reduces battery life (which is why I haven't downloaded yet) 5. Can't run all 35 million Windows apps/programs (for now) Finally, I don't edit videos, edit photos, or play games. The SPX was not designed for these hobbies, it was designed for white-collar professionals and mobile business folks.
I'm wondering whether they'd improve the simulation performance, being able to run most of Windows native apps is good and all, and but not being able to run it optimally is just bad.

Would've really liked to see at least some changes on the front regarding the bezels on the Pro 7, but I guess they thought that the Pro 7 and Pro X would look too similar and confuse consumers?
Austin, I have watched you for years, and have a question. My dad wants a surface, which one should I get him, he does field work, like agriculture. He takes a lot of data, but he also wants a portable and powerful surface laptop, which one should I get?
Take a normal intel surface pro. If he handles a lot of data take a high end one with 16 gigs of ram. I don't know which software he uses, but most data software's do not support ARM based CPUs.
I love this computer. No issues with me, it's expensive but I can afford it. Fast, runs all the programs I need it to. (Outlook, one note, full excel and word, internet) the pen is amazing, better than my ipad pro pen (2nd generation) I do understand the complaints, but I love the sleek feel and how light it is.
Its coming to the point where arm chips will eventually take over the hardware space. And I think it could work if more developers were to openly support it.
I had the surface pro 2. Used it for four years. I used it with actual programs. I had SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, SketchUp, fusion 360, word, excel and a couple of cam software. I use it for actual work. I hook it up to an external screen and keyboard, mouse, 3dmouse and software dongle. I do this at home and at work. I upgraded to a surface pro 6 right before surface pro 7 came out just because my old machine's battery and ports were starting to wear out. What the surface provides is reliability. It cost me $2k for my setup. Now I wish I could buy the surface pro x which is similarly priced. I guess the surface line is not as good as your Apple products for watching netflix or posting your selfies.
Reminds me of when the iPad first launched and so many scoffed at it, saying it's just a big iPhone. Now people are doing so much with iPads, it could be the same for Windows on ARM in the future.
Agreed. If you want just light browsing and a few apps... any iPad, Windows 10 tablet, or Chromebook is good enough at half the price. If you need certain apps, you might as well go for a full Surface or Surface-type device. No one wants to explain to someone why X runs slow or you can't install Y on a system for no real benefits (it isn't less expensive, it doesn't run faster, it isn't really running longer, etc.) Windows for ARM promised longer battery life and less expensive machines. So far... it has just delivered app incompatibility.
Lets be honest. Ken was actually being nice here. For those kind of tasks plus pen support (and more) the iPad Pro 11 inch is infinitely better value. I admit it was hard for me to take the plunge but Ive been using it as my portable work computer for a year and its been amazing (once you get used to it).
Microsoft probably made a deal with Qualcomm here. I guess Qualcomm is trying to become the third big Processor maker. Microsoft knows people will mind not being able to run 64 bit apps on an expensive tablet, but they need to get the new processors out there to the public. This might be very interesting in two or three years, especially since the Surface line up has quite a big graphical artist following and with Adobe on board. Let's see... Hey Ken! Good video!
It's more of something of the future to have now because nothing is optimized to run well on arm but in years to come arm will be much more useful in many applications as things are built for that system more same with iPads in the beginning verses now it has to start somewhere so developers can get sold on it.

The biggest downside of the Surface Pro X is the stupid ARM processor. This tablet needs a x86 processor. I want to be able to use my full x86-64 desktop apps. Not the stupid Windows Store UWP apps or old versions of 32-bit apps. Sorry, Microsoft, but this tablet no longer has any advantage over the iPad. You can no longer do serious work on it just like the iPad…
Despite the largely negative reviews, I'm so intrigued by this and am tempted to pull the trigger. I only need to do web browsing, emailing, MS Office so I think I could get by. But it puts a bad taste in my mouth that this is considerably more expensive than the Pro 7, which will be generally more usable and issue-free. Not sure the smaller bezels and better battery life (which I've seen mixed reviews of anyway) is worth the potential headache of app incompatibility.
I know I'm a few years too late but I got a surface pro X for very cheap on ebay lightly used for like$280 ish 8gb model, I installed a 512gb ssd in there myself, love how light and portable it is. Installed windows 11, runs nice, it's not the fastest but it gets the job done. Media viewing, drawing, web browsing, social media, plays lightweight games like sonic mania, hollow knight, and ori.
yeah I think the LTE compatibility requires an ARM processor, or at the very least, that was the easiest way to invite LTE... because looking around it's very hard to find an LTE device that isn't ARM
So there's no advantage over the surface pro 7. What's the point of arm? For now arm CPU tablets are lightweight but on the Intel side CPUs are also getting better and better with more power efficiency and full windows app compatibility.
Have to politely disagree with you about the mistake part. Been using this for some time now and it's one heck of an office workstation IMO. The way I see it this all boils down to picking the right tool for the right job, and it seems not too many people are capable of doing that.

D. Reyna he’s not lying to you though. Widows for arm isn’t exactly a well developed ecosystem, the ipad at the moment offers more for users, though I’d never pay over $500 for a tablet, at that price point you might as well get a laptop.
The thing is, if you live inside a web browser or need something that does that kind of things, you can get a base model iPad if you want to go the tablet route, or just get a cheap Windows/Chrome OS laptop, saving hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I agree, this is not worth it right now. In my opinion, Microsoft should have given developers more time to create killer apps for this, as well as improving performance for x86 applications. P.S.: Ken absolutely killed it in this review. Great job
The point of the surface pro x is to allow devs to develop the killer apps since they will know with an actual product the limitations and possibilities. With the release of the X, developers know that Microsoft is going to continue working with arm based computers, and is serious with their innovation, leading to more and more apps being made compatible
@@slauderek3195 It's a good point, but I personally think that to get more devs involved they'll either have to sell many - which, I must say, doesn't look like it's gonna happen - or partner with other manufacturers so they also make ARM-powered Windows laptops, while Microsoft gives them support. If they don't, it's just gonna be Windows RT all over again. They also had a flagship device back then, but maybe it wasn't the right time. Maybe it is now.
planetfifa for developers to spend money improving their apps running on arm computers, they have to see that there’s a market for it, and that investing that time and money will be worth while. A major company like Microsoft dropping an arm based laptop and showing a lot of interest in it, more than with previous devices in the past, I’m sure will motivate many companies into working on developing apps for arm. One thing I do wonder, is if Microsoft teamed up with Apple instead of Qualcomm for the processor even though that seems very implausible for them to do since they’re competitors. But you never know. Apple does have to buy the OLED panels for the iPhones from Samsung

There is talk that Apple could move to ARM in their computer by end of 2020. If they do then the big app's like Adobe and etc will have to port to Arm chips. Could generate a lot of work for programmers to port apps to Arm.
Shoulda been x86 the thing that made these so much better than something like an iPad is that you could run full desktop apps and not worry about optimization. What Microsoft should have done is look at what Apple did when they switched to intel. Rosetta was legendary because it worked incredibly well most people didn’t notice it at all
being forced to use Windows S, for me, defeats the point of getting a Windows based device. Getting Adobe and Corel both onboard with developing pro level graphics software for tablets would be huge towards getting other developers to realize the potential of developing for ARM... the processing power has been there for years, and they've all considered tablets a gimmick (as both you guys and Marques have yourselves have expressed similar) I've been editing video, audio, and basic graphics on my tablet for years... it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but, that's because the guy who made it is a one-man dev team doing it in his spare time... if Adobe or Corel decided to put real resources into it they would get it done easy... hell Corel Photopaint 5 ran fine on a 386 back in 1994... you can't tell me that a modern ARM processor can't do what a 082386 could do in 1994

Frfr the only thing that the regular Surface Pro 6 was missing was USB-C. Now that the Surface Pro 7 has it, it's a near flawless take on the product.

Adobe Fresco is coming to the Surface Pro X. And Sketchable isn't too bad either. This might not add broad appeal, but it's exciting for artists.

I think everyone agrees, its a great start in the ARM direction but a bit too pricey and too limited to be worth it yet.

D. Reyna he’s not lying to you though. Widows for arm isn’t exactly a well developed ecosystem, the ipad at the moment offers more for users, though I’d never pay over $500 for a tablet, at that price point you might as well get a laptop.
The thing is, if you live inside a web browser or need something that does that kind of things, you can get a base model iPad if you want to go the tablet route, or just get a cheap Windows/Chrome OS laptop, saving hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I agree, this is not worth it right now. In my opinion, Microsoft should have given developers more time to create killer apps for this, as well as improving performance for x86 applications.
P.S.: Ken absolutely killed it in this review. Great job
The point of the surface pro x is to allow devs to develop the killer apps since they will know with an actual product the limitations and possibilities. With the release of the X, developers know that Microsoft is going to continue working with arm based computers, and is serious with their innovation, leading to more and more apps being made compatible
@@slauderek3195 It's a good point, but I personally think that to get more devs involved they'll either have to sell many - which, I must say, doesn't look like it's gonna happen - or partner with other manufacturers so they also make ARM-powered Windows laptops, while Microsoft gives them support. If they don't, it's just gonna be Windows RT all over again. They also had a flagship device back then, but maybe it wasn't the right time. Maybe it is now.
planetfifa for developers to spend money improving their apps running on arm computers, they have to see that there’s a market for it, and that investing that time and money will be worth while. A major company like Microsoft dropping an arm based laptop and showing a lot of interest in it, more than with previous devices in the past, I’m sure will motivate many companies into working on developing apps for arm. One thing I do wonder, is if Microsoft teamed up with Apple instead of Qualcomm for the processor even though that seems very implausible for them to do since they’re competitors. But you never know. Apple does have to buy the OLED panels for the iPhones from Samsung
@@slauderek3195 That would have been really interesting, Apple arguably makes the best ARM processors around, but since they market their iPad Pro as a "laptop replacement", I think they'd see Microsoft as a direct competitor. Nevertheless, I hope we see more ARM-based computers in the future ^_^
There is talk that Apple could move to ARM in their computer by end of 2020. If they do then the big app's like Adobe and etc will have to port to Arm chips. Could generate a lot of work for programmers to port apps to Arm.
Shoulda been x86 the thing that made these so much better than something like an iPad is that you could run full desktop apps and not worry about optimization. What Microsoft should have done is look at what Apple did when they switched to intel. Rosetta was legendary because it worked incredibly well most people didn’t notice it at all
The moment the MS store associate told me that some programs work on the X, I replied Windows RT? Knew everyone was gonna nope out of this product.

being forced to use Windows S, for me, defeats the point of getting a Windows based device. Getting Adobe and Corel both onboard with developing pro level graphics software for tablets would be huge towards getting other developers to realize the potential of developing for ARM... the processing power has been there for years, and they've all considered tablets a gimmick (as both you guys and Marques have yourselves have expressed similar) I've been editing video, audio, and basic graphics on my tablet for years... it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but, that's because the guy who made it is a one-man dev team doing it in his spare time... if Adobe or Corel decided to put real resources into it they would get it done easy... hell Corel Photopaint 5 ran fine on a 386 back in 1994... you can't tell me that a modern ARM processor can't do what a 082386 could do in 1994
