    Nice video, I've watched your whisky reviews for a couple years now, and adore them. One small point though. There wasn't any tobacco smoking anywhere in the old world prior to Columbus because the Tobacco plant is native to the Americas. However once America was discovered it spread rather quickly through merchants and traders to the Far East. This is when the Oriental strains and varietals were planted. All post Columbus. Cheers

      Ralfy never said Herodotus saw people smoke tobacco, rather he observed them just smoking some unknown herbal mixture

    • @economicsjingle
      @economicsjingle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AintkillanyTrue, it was probably cannabis. However, they weren't using a pipe to smoke it--they stood around a fire and inhaled the fumes.

      The scythians weren't smoking tobacco it was cannabis if I remember correctly he described them throwing material onto a fire and howling I think he thought they were seeds maybe. Scythia is essentially Mesopotamia so we are talking BC times

    I thoroughly enjoy your whisky videos and also enjoy smoking my briar pipes. The Three Nuns brand you recommend is still on the market, originally it was blended in Scotland by a Mr. Bell and is now blended in Denmark by the Macbaren tobacco company ( and ironically Scottish name for a Copenhagen based outfit) and is still a top quality blend of Virginia and Perique tobaccos. My ideal pairing is either Lagavullin with a heavy English Latakia based mixture like McConnel's Oriental or a lighter malt like Genmorangie 10 year with a naturally sweet Virginia flake like Capstan or McConnel's Scottish Flake, a wonderful light mix of Virginia, Perique and light Orientals. Thanks again for the entertaining and always educational videos.

    Hey Ralfy, love your work, I've learnt enough about pipe smoking from your vlog that one day in about 40 years' time, I'm sure I'll be thinking "I can finally celebrate my retirement with a pipe and my best whisky"! Cheers. P.S. Love the soapbox rant at the end, you're a true "freeman" after my own heart - I hope you've inspired some of your viewers to question authority, think for themselves and be more aware of the world that is going on around all of us.

    I recently tried a few clay tavern style pipes. I must say the longer stems give a cooler smoke. I somewhat prefer a clay over my briar wood.

    Ah, the pleasures of pipes and whisky. Nothing quite like it.
    I'm lucky enough to come from an area heavily populated by Native Americans which led to some discoveries of some incredibly interesting and delicious tobaccos for the pipe known only to my area. On a side note- Corncob pipes can actually last many years. There are a few time-tested methods to make a corncob hold up to a good briar.
    Other than that, an absolutely phenomenal video! I raise my glass to you, sir!

    As a pipe smoker just beginning to develop an interest in whiskey, and I couldn't have enjoyed this video more. I remember when I first tried a peated whiskey; the taste reminded me so much much of the latakia in robust Balkan or English blend. I thought it was beautiful! I think some snuff and whiskey pairings might be interesting, too. Great video, and very nice pipes!

    Back in the day, all taverns would have clay pipes hanging from the ceiling. The clay not only was cool smoke, but the clay allowed the next user of the pipe to break off a bit of the stem. allowing the user a fresh end. This is why only the shortest of pipes are found from those times. I might also note, many pipe smokers take great care breaking in a new pipe and will exclusively use on brand of tobacco and never vary from that brand.
    A good drink and a good smoke! What pleasures!

    I wish I could find a high quality Calabash pipe like my uncle used to have. He told me that they were the best for smoking tobacco when wanting to unwind in the evening. He had smaller cheaper pipes he old use hike out and about from the home. As for that Shisha you have sitting on the shelf behind you, I find these as quite satisfying at the end of a long tiring day. It takes a little longer to setup but it provides for a longer and cooler smoke as I fill the bottle with ice and water. A friend recommends using cold milk as the filter, don't know, haven't tried it yet. The Shisha with a good apple flavored tobacco ( yes you can use your favorite pipe blend as well ) and a fine Cognac makes for a relaxing evening.

    Most pipe tobacco is highly aromatic (i.e. artificially flavored), which is against my personal preference. I would recommend either Dunhill Early Morning Pipe or Orlik Golden Sliced to a beginning smoker. If you're able to import from the US, I'd recommend picking up anything from G.L. Pease. This independent, small batch blender is renowned for his English mixtures (e.g. Chelsea Morning and Westminster), but also does a good straight Virginia (Union Square) and Virginia/Perique (Fillmore).

  • @HookahBurdar
    @HookahBurdar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with You on the Three Nuns: greta tobacco. Strong and tasty. I would add two reccomendatios for beginners: MAC BAREN'S "Original choice" very good for beginners, and for breaking a pipe. And a decent English blend with some good Latakia tobacco in the mixture (which will also include Virginia(s) as the main component, and then might have Orientals, Burley, Cavendish and even rare Périque varieties). I enjoy mixtures by Dunhill (965, Early Morning, London mixture), or by Samuel Gawith...

    I suddenly remembered that I should have said when I first watched this, and I now you've maybe even thought about it if you haven't tried. But just in case it never came to mind, I do recommend a wee bit of peat in the aul pipe. I must say your older vid on 'peat sticks' in a cigar was the inspiration indeed, and what a lovely difference it makes. Keep it up!

    I love the idea of smoking a pipe and I actually own a cob pipe and a wooden one, but I typically only enjoy them for the first 5 minutes and then the bowl starts to get too hot, or it just dies out. Do you have any tips on how to pack a good pipe and on how to smoke it correctly? Also, do you need to keep all or any pipe tobaccos at a certain humidity level in order to keep them fresh? Thanks Ralfy, and I love the variety in your blogs mixing in pipe and cigar reviews.

    Ralfy: Great to find you. I am a pipe smoker and whisky drinker (notice I did spell it correctly even though I live in Washington state in the former colonial area to your west). Oddly enough I am a big fan of both pipe smoking and single malt whisky and own and operate a retail store and our inventory includes lots of great pipes and of course, as you mention many many pipe tobacco blends. I am looking forward to future reviews of the whisky and maybe an occasional mention of pipe smoking. Regards, Doug Owen.

      there's a reason the Irish spell whiskey with an "e". It was to separate their product from the inferior blended Scotch being made with column stills. They did not consider that real whiskey so they added an e.

    From one lover of fine tobacco and whiskey to another, thanks for this making this video. That's quite the beautiful hookah you have there. While I have been known to enjoy the modern and fruity hookah tobaccos, I much prefer the traditional tobaccos that still taste like tobacco. I hope you have had the chance to try some of these. It's a very unique experience.

    Peating up your pipe tobacco;
    Add just a drop or two...of Ardbeg10 or Laphraoig to your pipe tobacco container wait a day or so, open the container for an hour, load your Meerscham and Vwellah, you have a beautiful slightly peated version of your favorite smoke!!

    Been around pipes for most of my life, but I learned a few things about Falcon Pipes that I did not know. Besides, it finally occurs to me that I could carry one stem and 3 or 4 bowls a lot easier than 4 pipes. Guess I should get one. Dagnabbit Ralfy, there goes more money. ;-).
    Great video. I love my cigars, but pipes are more consistent, cheaper, tastier, easier to maintain, etc. Have never had 3 Nuns and have wanted to try it for years. Need to get one of my Brit Brothers to send me some.

    I tend to favor beer when smoking a pipe. For me, some pipe tobaccos have too many nuances begging to be noticed whilst smoking. Unfortunately, so do the whiskies. Cigars are a bit more monochromatic and allow me to focus on the malt while still enjoying the smoke. Great video.
    Cheers!

    Im sure some did, but most didnt.
    Modern Tobacco is generally filtered, and cigarettes are dried. People don't inhale cigars and pipe tobacco because the oils in the tobacco burns hot, and it actually is very painful to inhale it; even when its filtered. Cigarettes can be inhaled because they are dried, and there are very little oils left in the tobacco.

    Hello, Ralfy. You said, that bowls of the pipes must be cleaned, But I heard, that the carbone and the tar inside of the pipe are protecting the bowl from the burning. And You must clean only burnt tobacco leaves out of it. Is it so?

    Thank you for a good introduction to pipe smoking! Pipe smokers are somewhat of a dying breed. On top of that pipe & cigar smokers are hit with restrictive legislation aimed at cigarette smokers. There are signs of a revival and I hope your video will contribute. I do have one little nitpick regarding tobacco, but I'll address that separately. There are also a lot of videos on TH-cam about e.g. smoking technique, which is useful because new smokers can be turned off by initial mistakes.

    Ive been smoking cigars and drinking whisky for quite some time and just this year got into pipes and pipe tobacco. Quite an adventure to say the least. Ive had some good pipe tobaccos and some pretty disgusting ones as well. I do enjoy the pipe mainly because its cheaper, and you can sit down have a dram and a bowl for 30 minutes then call it a night. Where my cigars last hours and one dram turns into 2 turns into 3

    Those of you who love cigars and want a bit of cigar taste in your pipe tobacco, I don't recommend braking up a cigar and packing it into your pipe bowl. I tried it once with a Maduro cigar that was damaged. A few puffs into it, it tasted just like the cigar. Wonderful! However, it didn't take long for the nauseousness to over come me. I'm no light heart when it comes to a strong cigar, I've tried many and had no problem. But smoking cigar tobacco in a pipe must retain much of the tobaccos properties as it hit me like a ton of bricks. Just a warning.

    Ahh Ralfy.... Such an interesting chap!
    Favorite videos on youtube hands down...Every single one of them.
    Edit*
    Very interesting pipe you've suggested, I was completely unaware of their existence. Very impressively thought out smoking device, some real engineering thought behind it... On that note, I was wondering if you've had the chance to try a Morta (usually peated oak if I understand correctly)? As you are a fellow fan of peat, I believe it's something you might enjoy. Sadly (in my opinion at least), the peat influence is less pronounced with use and relative level of 'quality'/neutrality. Also, the cost tends to be a bit prohibitive.
    Excellent content, as always.

    Hey Ralphy, I always enjoy your reviews(and general chitchat!) but I understand the "rifling" actually just increases the surface area which the smoke is in contact with, causing a cooler and smoother smoke! I may be wrong though as a falcon is a pipe I've never smoked!

    In fact, the hookah's idea is to allow the smoke to move from the very hot flavor container (the one in the top) through a column made of copper to get it colder. After that, it passes through a half-filled container of water which naturally wet and filter the smoke before it gets into your mouth. And that's why It's very popular in the middle east because they have the driest and hottest weather around the world. As a result, hookah's smoke is wet, rich and noticeably colder than the cigarette.

    Come this summer it'll be 15 years since I went on a smoking-break after about ten years of smoking. Now whatever else might happen in life, I have no intention of becoming addicted to vitamin N ever again! Still, I wouldn't mind smoking a pipe once in a while. So what I'm wondering is whether you've ever felt the "need" for smoking like when you were a cigarette-smoker? In short, are you now in full control or might you fall back into your old habits just like that? Thanks for your time.

    Ralfy, if it's a longer pipe cleaner you need then a solution (from an unlikely source) is at hand. I'm an armorer for Ar15 and M16 rifles. There is a rather useless product for allegedly cleaning the gas tube for those rifles. They are basically very long pipe cleaners. Search on Amazon for Tapco-Tube-Mops-Cleaning. It's $6 US Currency. Again, not recommended for rifles but I use them for pipe cleaning all the time.

    Ralfy,,,I disagree with you on smoke on pipe versus cigar....a GOOD cigar should have a good draw and a full mouth of smoke,,,same as a pipe...few people seem to be able to pack a pipe properly and thus they will get a poor smoke...I have smoked both since 1985( when I was 16)...still....good on ya...a Good cigar or pipe is a gift of flavor....Cheers!

      Try watching the film 'Withnail and I.' It's about a couple of peculiar, failed actors in England who go on a spree to an uncle's place in the country. Fun and games on the way. The game is this; research the film in private, then get in all the bottles they partake of and have a wee party where everyone has to drink what they, in the film, do when they do. Great fun, but please act responsibly. Drugs are mentioned and I do not condone that sort of thing.

    You probably won't see my comment but I'd love to see a coffee review. You mentioned it on the last video so thought it may be something you'd consider.
    Thank you.

    So how do you import tobacco from the US? You can't. At least not legally, unless you bring it on your person (or that of a friend) in small quantities. You're not allowed to have it mailed to you, even if the particular tobacco isn't available locally. There are some online shops, however, that will mislabel the package to circumvent customs, but that means risking losing the shipment as well as a fine. As someone who mainly smokes US tobacco, this is extremely frustrating to me.

    Ralfy, could you give me any tips on smoking a pipe. I bought one two weeks ago and have been trying enjoy it but am finding myself quite literally lighting it up again, everytime. It simply goes out if I don't puff it for five seconds, no matter how I pack it/draw from it and I'm about ready smash it up. So much for a relaxing smoke. x

    The sad state of affairs in Europe is that it is hardly possible to buy high end tobacco legally due to lack of demand, as well as import restrictions. This means that you can only buy tobacco from the big producers, which is generally highly aromatic. Exceptions are e.g. Dunhill, Solani and Samuel Gawith. For artisanal, small batch pipe tobacco you have to find a way to import from the US. Brands to look out for are G.L. Pease, McClelland and Cornell & Diehl, but there are also a few others.
