Why is it that graphene oxide and not pure graphene is being used? The simple answer should be because it's the most appropriate derivative for this type of application. It's not that difficult of a concept to grasp. Hats off to David and Pan for the great and informative show.

I succumbed to the hype and bought a bottle of 303. Per your initial review, I will apply this over all the sealant I have on all three cars (Turtle Ceramic and Bead Maker). As long as I don't have to remove existing sealants (a lot of work I don't feel like doing!), I'll give this a try. As previously mentioned, I have used 303 silicone protectant on my cars' interiors and rubber gaskets for years.
As for the longevity of the product (Seven years? Really?), I remain skeptical. No matter, because I apply a sealant or quick spray after every wash.
Thanks, as always, for the BEST auto detailing channel on the internet!

Thanks Pete, but I think you are confused with other products. The 303 Graphene Spray Nano Coating is claimed to last up to 1 year, not 7.
And yes you can apply it on top of your existing protection without removing it. However, to get maximum performance and durability out of this, there's nothing better than stripping everything and starting from scratch. But you don't have to.

I tried this product last month on a few vehicles. One was my daily driver, a black truck. The coating that comes out of the bottle is black, not sure why. It seems to give the black paint a nice depth and nice shine. But, it doesn’t give it a nice silky soft touch. No comparison to Hybrid 07 sealant for softness. Second vehicle was a Shelby Daytona Coupe with a high end newer paint job. This finish is so smooth, a microfiber cloth just sides off when laying flat. 303 seemed the remove the silky finish and made it a little less soft. For $20, it’s not bad but it’s not all that...

  • @josefernandoduran7373

That was a great interview, I always wanted to find a discussion were technical and phenomenological aspects take place. In addition, I understood that the surface temperature lowering effect could be explained in terms of the rates of heat transfer vs the rate of evaporation and slicking of water droplets. The rate of heat transfer is generally described by an overall heat transfer coefficient, as well as the heat capacity, naturally, that parameters are function of the chemical species involved in the system, in this case graphene oxide structure. From this perspective the overall heat transfer coefficient should be lower (and/or the heat capacity should be higher) than the one of the SiO2 structure, basically due to the presence of Carbon species. This situation would allow the graphene oxide structure to act as a reservoir (or sink) of heat, avoiding the fast rate transfer from the surface of the coat to water, which in turn, would minimize the interaction of the hardness of the water by increasing the time for the droplets to slide to the ground without being evaporated, or eventually, to be dried by air or by contact methods.

I am not the normal user. I was about to formulate a Graphene coating for true testing to determine it's efficiency.
I have serious doubts that these Graphene products are effective beyond the carrier agents effects.
Most are infused with GO , Graphene Oxide, which is 1. Water ... Hydrophilic. It attracts water, not repellant. 2. GRaphene does not automatically bond to itself or another surface. 3. The Graphene coatings available are using Silane, which is Concrete water proofing Poly. So the actual effect is not from Graphene, but from the waterproofing Poly.
Now Graphene does not mix into anything else easilly. There are specific ways it must be manufactured and handled, which are not inexpensive. You cannot stir or cook Graphene.
Graphene only melts under temperatures of 9,000. Deg. Kelvin, which The 303 company does not have the capability. So how is this supposed Graphene being manufactured.
It may interest anyone reading this that there is a Company that owns the Patent in US and Internationally for all five known way of manufacturing Graphene coatings. Google bought them.
International in 2017, and in US in 2018.

      Now that's interesting

    • @sooocheesy

It would be interesting to see a TEM / XPS spectroscopy analysis of these coatings. For those unfamiliar (most people), that's basically using an electron beam to very slowly drill through a material (TEM) and then use xrays to determine the material composition at a given depth (XPS). We've used this where I work to engineer multilayer laser optical coatings and it gives very precise information about coating thickness and what elements are present at a given depth.
My guess is that the ceramic (SiO2)/graphene component is probably a tiny fraction of the carrier liquid (Silane as you say?) which is what's really doing the majority of the hydrophobic 'work' that people want from coatings. It's also likely that the SiO2/Graphene is only present in some areas (ie there's gaps between them) across the surface and the majority of the surface is just covered with the carrier epoxy (silane).
This is not to say these coatings are BS or don't work - I use them and they do work - but it's probably more accurate to say that only 0.1% of the bottle you buy is actually ceramic or graphene and the other active ingredient that makes up 5-10% is Silane..

    • @christopherfoxwallace1291
      @christopherfoxwallace1291 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@sooocheesy Silane is a polymer of Si (silicone), so it is difficult to distinguish from SiO2, Silicone Dioxide.
G, or GO , Graphene Oxide binds easilly to Polymers, so it does work to some degree. In this case , many Auto Paints are Polyurethane. So GO and Silane will bond to it.
The problem I have with these companies is that they claim they have a proprietary formula, but this can also be an excuse to avoid scrutiny.
Also None of these companies can claim they have done any serious testing. One You Tube video claimed they could install a 7 year Graphene coating. I laughed and told him such a claim was impossible seeing the coatings haven't been around for more than a year, and I dare any company to prove me wrong with proof.
I think one Detailer read on one bottle a company claimed that using their Graphene could make the paint surface cooler.
Now a real GO coating could do this, and it is one reason why I was going to manufacture a Coating for testing which would eventually go towards aerospace use. But to make these claims without having done the proper research is irresponsible, false advertising bordering on fraud.

Pan, I can't thank you enough for being you, and also for sharing this with us.
    1. I applied this product evening into darkness (with lights setup), but I don't think I really ever saw it cure to a "white" haze. It's a dark grey metallic car, and I might not have waited long enough before removing. It just looked kind of wet, mostly clear-ish when I removed. Did I just wipe off tentative layers that should have stacked up? Clearly something is on there now because beading occurs, especially after the prior step (see #2 below)
    2. I used CarPro Spotless on the CQuartz coated car (with layers of Reload and Hydro2, so who knows which layer the water spots were between.) It expectedly removed any hydrphobic properties of the coating, after neutralizing with power wash spray followed by an additional wash with Reset soap. Water spots are still showing, particularly on the roof, so did I just lock them in under this layer (rhetorical question I guess), but it leads me to the actual concern..... By NOT claying/de-ironing the si02 layers (I was under the impression it is not recommended), haven't I also now sealed in contaminants?
Ultimately, would you recommend "undoing" all these layers and just compound/polish down to the clear coat and start from the correct prep level, or just keep going with this 303 product, topping every 6 months or so?
    3. Lastly (sorry), Just wanted to report that after a normal washing of my my microfiber towels right after this application, they are stained black and still smell like petroleum distillates, and do not have that "grabby" feel to them. They're soft and seem to need an additional washing. I'm wondering if they're junk now since maybe the product sat long enough to "stick"? (1 hour?)
Thanks again for your time, and especially for your effort if you happen to see and answer any of these!

    • @PanTheOrganizer

Hi Brian. Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate them. I'll try to answer your questions, but I must admit you lost me there as there is lots of text and it's getting late lol. In your case, as your paint seemed to have been affected by water spots, contamination and mineral deposits, then it would have been best to fully strip the paint and start from fresh, that's 100% sure. Wash, chemical iron removal, claybar, machine polishing (which is what really removes the water stains), IPA wipe down and then start fresh with a coating application like your 303. I think you would have had a much better experience.
There comes a point where there are so many layers of protection on a car, like seems to have been the case with yours, that it gets difficult to obtain the best results when applying a new product like 303 Graphene spray coating. Multiple layers of CQuartz, Reload, HydrO2, etc. Your paintwork was saturated most probably.
And no worries for your towels. 303 said that if you wash the towels and applicators after use (1 to 2 hours is ok) no problem, you can reuse them. It's normal that they are stained black, as that's the graphene oxide that has a black tint.
      I hope this helps!

Awesome video Pan!!! This will take a few days to find the time to get through. Im about 30 minutes in.
As an observation I question the claim that it lowers the surface temperature. It sounds like David is describing how it lowers the surface temperature to prevent spotting when it is applied, not to a fully cured coating several weeks after application on a hood sitting in the sun. I think he indirectly answered the question anyways. Graphene is great at heat transfer in the x-y plane and heat energy travels from hot to cold. It is simply "good" in the z plane. If the entire hood is the same amount of hot I dont understand how the graphene will make a big difference especially considering how thin the coating is since there is no "cooler" spot to transfer the heat to unless it was in partial shade. For example I used a graphene pad to cool my wife laptop because it transfers heat from the hot cpu over a larger area that is cooler since the cpu is significantly hotter than the surrounding materials which increases the convection. I would think convection would be the most significant form of heat transfer to cool the surface of a hot car and that's primarily determined by orientation and surface area, neither of which the spray would significantly alter. I'd also suggest the coating is pretty thin so the temperature of the clear coat and the temperature of the surface of the car would be within a fraction of a degree. The only argument I can think of is that when it rains on the car it transfers heat to the rain drop better than say a wax but I would expect that to make spotting worse, not better as it would accelerate evaporation and again due to how thin the coating is I'd suggest the difference is trivial. Perhaps David can correct me if he is reading the comments and has time but I understand he is probably pretty busy so I certainly dont expect him to.
    Thanks again Pan!

Jason from Chicago Auto Pro did a video on graphene vs ceramic. He did a test panel and showed just what Thomas is indicating: left outside in the elements, the graphene side was hotter than the ceramic and showed more water spots. For me, the is still out. 303 still makes great products, but I’m not all in yet on graphene.

When asking if what a company sells is legit, why would you believe a word of what the company or those that depend on the sales of the item says?
A man will ignore the truth if his income depends on it...you need third party testing to get truth. Im not saying the product doesnt do what he says, but I wouldnt take them without a grain of salt.

Finally got a decent day to wash and apply 303 Graphene. It certainly is black! I followed the directions, waiting for a light-colored haze, then remove / buff.
It doesn't smell like strawberries, peaches, or mangoes. It smells like it's a dedicated industrial product. That's fine.
It's more difficult to remove - lots of drag. Good exercise! There were no streaks.
My paint is shiny, but not slick by any means. I like slick.
Solution: Top with Bead Maker next wash. Now THAT'S slick!
Longevity: I have no idea, and probably will never know. I use a spray detailer (almost always Bead Maker, Turtle Seal & Shine once in a while) every time I wash.
I have no comment on any other claims (surface temp, etc.).
303 Graphene is economical to use, and well worth taking a chance. I will never pay big money for a tiny bottle of XYZ Razzmatazz. Not for a daily driver. If I had a Ferrari or a Mercedes for entertainment, I would consider it. But a 10-year old Honda? Not a chance. I'll put that money in the beer fund.
I'm still a huge Bead Maker fan. I'll use it 'til it's gone, then will order some more.
I will also buy Turtle Seal & Shine, and 303 Graphene.
They're all good, solid products, and I would never have known about them if I didn't watch "Pan the Organizer!" I'd still be using Turtle Ice Paste.

Thanks for sharing your real world experience Pete! Just out of curiosity, did you do any prep work to the paint before applying the 303? Iron remover, claybar, polish, IPA? And did you have any protection already on your paint before applying 303?

@@PanTheOrganizer I always clay bar in the spring. I applied Bead Maker, and used after every wash. On your recommendation, I tried Turtle Wax Seal & Shine (improved); liked it. I haven't done much of anything in the last two months. Paint still beads, but didn't have that slickness (I use the "fingernail test").
I have never used iron remover, IPA, and I'm too timid to use a machine. I'll give some serious thought over the winter to getting a DA polisher and trying it in the spring. I'll re-watch your videos for instructions and take my time. (It's really nice to be retired!)
In the winter, I visit a car wash (I know that sounds horrible to purists, but dirty is dirty!) and spritz w/ Bead Maker. This is the time of year I just try to keep up with the lousy weather (New Jersey - there must be a salt mine around here someplace).
      Thanks, and Best Wishes!

If they're to break it down to use to protect our cars that's crazy especially at such a good price. Otherwise pure graphene being able to use on our vehicles with all that tech we would probably be looking at $100 a bottle.

Hahahah very good one! Yeah you know how the internet goes. Everyone is a so called "expert" on every topic! :) People with no chemical backgrounds discrediting new technology just based on what they might have heard elsewhere... Hmmmm Thankfully, the majority of my viewers appreciated this episode to learn more about it, and I have another few interesting ones like this coming up soon!

So for the laymen, the biggest takeaway is graphene is supposed to reduce water spotting. Otherwise it's almost identical to ceramic in performance, right? I may have missed it but did he mention anything about shine/gloss?
Think I'm going to wait this one out. The market is too fresh, need more competitors to enter the ring. Dave sounds honest & like he knows what he's talking about, but at the end of the day science is science and gets better with time/more real world tests/more brains working on the new technology.
Great video Pan. I just heard about graphene in the past few weeks and this interview was a huge help to know what it's about.

For the price it seems like a decent product. But here in the UK, I can get sonax extreme brilliant shine detailer spray in 750ml bottles for 7.50gbp or less so I am sticking with it.
    It is incredible stuff.

Yes, it is a bonafide sealant disguised as a quick detailer.

Thanks Bruce! Yeah 24 hours after my video was released, they sold out. But they're working as fast as humanly possible to restock I have been told.

I'll buy this just because 303 was willing to be questioned like this! Great info and video

Yes it says a lot when a company makes their chemists available for these talks and he didn’t shy away from none of my questions! Great brand.

Great job Pan and David you guys went into a lot of detail regarding graphene and I have a better understanding. However, until 303's Graphene is more readily available I will continue to use Turtle Wax's Shine N Seal in the meantime. Currently, the demand has exceeded the supply.

This seems like a great product! Wondering how it protects on the black plastic trim lots of newer cars have? Will it stop the trim from fading to gray?

Ok Pan....now we wanna see the torture test comparisons to the other top performing spray sealants.
I ordered a bottle of this new 303 graphene spray a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately it was slow to ship so I haven't received it yet...and I was supposed to detail my car yesterday but I am waiting on the new spray.
