I'm pretty sure the reason the military failed is because these creatures are pretty fast, and they have basically bulletproof skin, these creatures also don't nest it seems like they are constantly on the move, so imagine how many of the creatures would instantly surround a platoon of soldiers when they start firing, also it's very difficult to pinpoint where exactly one is since they can climb.

They have body armor. In the first Quiet Place you see newspaper clippings about the aliens creatures.
