Jesse I get where you're coming from here but you really need to talk more about the nuts and bolts of running a forum. Forums can be a HUGE time-suck and headache for the owner/administrator, trying to deal with the spam and troll comments.
Forums can be a huge time-suck but easily managed too. It's not too hard to have someone check in out it hourly around the clock - but I understand 100% your perspective.
I owned a big forum and I can tell you that it can be a big pain in the a§§ sometimes.

Yeah I agree with that. I was managing a PhpBB forum back in the days and it was definitely a time-consuming thing and not as easy to manage as some may suggest.

Yeah this all makes a lot of sense! Just wondering, do you think online communities on Circle, Mighty Networks (etc) also make sense in this case, instead of a forum? I just wonder if forums have a benefit over these community platforms.

you don't need WP. You can use forum software hosted on your hosting server.

Just be mindful, as Facebook algorithm constantly change. I say this as someone with a social media background. A few years back, pages were a big thing. Then Facebook decided that groups were more important. But now it looks like pages are getting more important again. Besides that they constantly add other limitations, they lower reach so you have to pay to get more views, etc. Even though I do use Facebook in my marketing mix, I do think it's important to create traffic sources that you own yourself (forums, newsletters, etc), in case of algorithm changes. That's also what Jesse emphasizes in the video.
