This is interesting. I became a CST in 1977. Actually in those days it was CORT, Certified Operating Room Technician. It was changed to CST a couple of years later. I used the tuition reimbursement from the hospital to become a PA on the trauma surgery team, then a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration and finally a PhD in Public Health Education. CST was an excellent beginning.
I did the preppy program and they never gave me an externship because the state I live on don’t do externships. And I got put on a do not hire list because this program is not CAAHEP certified
All states do externships. You must be referring to your local hospitals refusing to do externships. It also sounds like that hospital only accepts the CST certification through NBSTSA which is the only one accredited by CAAHEP. There will continue to be exceptions to the rules in areas where supply is greater than demand. They have no need to expand their accepted certifications because they probably have plenty of surgical techs.
@@thesterileguy okay if all states do externships. Would you know which places in Louisiana especially New Orleans area does externships. Because during the preppy program my externship coordinator didn’t help me at all. They would give me job lists instead on externship sites and she wouldn’t even contact any place for me to get an externship.
I'm assuming you're referring to Indiana University Health? AST already enacted legislation in Indiana in 2010 monopolizing certification to only exist through NBSTSA which already requires two year accredited programs. 2025 won't change anything. AST and NBSTSA have been working together to try and monopolize as the only pathway to surgical technology because they want to capture all the money in the field of certification for surgical technology. It's gross and should be amended because monopolizing an industry violates American antitrust laws.
Unfortunately, Tennessee is one of the states that got suckered by the AST to only accept NBSTSA as the certifying agency which blocked every other agency.
Yes, it’s good for Washington. The only legislation in WA around surgical techs is that you have to register with WA department of health as a surgical techs but that’s it.
Sterile guy, I'm in acworth georgia 30 minutes from Atlanta. Wellstar hospitals Emory and surrounding hospitals here. Will preppy have trouble getting me externship around here?

I’m currently a sterile processing tech and interested in the different fields I can jump to. This one comes up a lot. I don’t have my CRCST yet but will soon. Is this a good option as a surg tech?
It’s a fantastic option! They make really good money compared to Sterile Techs (unfortunately for Sterile Techs) and you have a lot of options with types of surgeries and places you could work as well. Really cool job.
@@thesterileguy sweet! I know you talked about it in the video but going to an actual college would be hard for me. I can just get my certification online and be done with it and start applying?
@@2ECONDxYeah the Preppy training and then taking the certification afterwards is completely online. The only thing you’ll need to do thereafter is Preppy will find you an externship site to get hands on experience which oftentimes ends up being the place you get hired if you wanted to stay there.

I was told by IU Health that as of 2025 , it will be required that all student surg techs complete a 2 year program minimum
