    Film Description: A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter,s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. -

    To be fair, the reason her hair isn't tied in this scene is because it's supposed to represent how "imprecise" and "free" her character is (note that Nina's hair is in a tightly controlled bun). It's symbolic of the fact that Lily doesn't obsess over being perfect. :)

      Likewise, the body language between Nina and Leroy reveal a lot about what they feel about her. He sees Nina watching Lily and moves close to Nina and whispers conspiratorially, as if he and Nina were peers, about Lily's freedom of motion. Then he quickly puts the pressure back on Nina, implying that Nina is faking it. We see very much the same look on Nina's face when her mom gives her a backhanded compliment. That poor girl is victimized in such a passive-aggressive way that she probably could never point out any particular instance in which she was hurt.

    Man the attention to details. I always noticed that Lily's hair is down and in her face. It represents her carefree spirit. Nina in contrast always has her hair in a really tight bun, representing how confined she is by her perfectionist attitude

      I agree. Of course, since Natalie is the lead, people will see things mainly from her point of view and everything, but I agree that Mila stood out as a character all her own, even if just as the antagonist in Natalie's eyes. She was never truly malicious or mean spirited to Natalie (only in her hallucinations). I even felt bad for Mila's character when she congratulated Natalie only to receive no response. Her reaction of "Sorry for disturbing you" actually tugged at my heartstrings. It wasn't her fault that Natalie saw her as competition and someone to be careful around. But anyway, all that to say I think Mila deserves more credit for her role as well :)

      @@pamelaj3214
      No, she was definitely "malicious" and "mean spirited", she just did it in a way that so that she could get away with it. The most overt/obvious example was when she went out to the bar with Nina (at her behest) and DRUGGED her drink while she was going to the bathroom, even after Nina initially said no to the pills. In the end Nina overslept and was off her game the next day at rehearsals, which was the intended consequence of the two going out from the very beginning. Shortly afterward she is promoted as understudy from filling in Nina's shoes while she overslept from the night of partying. Almost everything Mila Kunis' character did was manipulative and backstabby. She did it because she wanted to get ahead at the dance company and saw Nina as an easy target for her manipulations and as someone she could easily replace. The only time I can think of is when she is blown away by Nina's performance as the Black Swan, when she sees Nina as the talented and determined dancer she is an not as a chump. Sorry for the essay, but the reason I have so much to say about the character just goes to show that she is very well constructed/very well handled by Mila Kunis.

    • @pamelaj3214
      @pamelaj3214 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@benjamintillema3572 Yeah, I can say that you're right about Mila's character pushing the pills on her. Personally, though, I felt that it was because Natalie's character was so tightly wound she wanted her to loosen up. It didn't strike me as malicious because up until that point, Mila's character hadn't really done much but exist as competition to Natalie. I can see how her actions do come across that way, however, and I don't think she should have drugged her when Natalie clearly indicated she didn't want to do that sort of thing. But I also see it as, even if Mila hadn't done that and made Natalie frazzled, she still wouldn't be able to portray the black swan properly. But again, I can totally see your point of view on it as well. I think it's interesting how we can observe the same behavior and draw different conclusions from it :) Also, I don't mind the long reply at all haha

    I love this part because even though Nina was more technically sound, Mila Kunis's character had a raw ability that Nina did not. That was the point of this scene. Mila's character just let herself go and flowed freely while Nina was so obsessed with being perfect in every detail and that's what set them apart. The instructor was trying to point out that being Perfectly Flawed is better than being imperfectly perfect.

    Natalie Portman won the Oscar for her performance and talked about, in her acceptance speech, something about thanking the people that go unnoticed or appreciated, when making films. She then went on to thank makeup artists, craft services, lighting directors, or whomever. But failed to thank the actual ballet dancer who did most of the difficult and entricate dance sequences. They just digitally enhanced Natalie's face onto her body. Just saying..

      There are “stunt” doubles for a lot of movies, Flashdance comes to mind, and I don’t think it’s they are ever mentioned except in the credits. When they aren’t that’s the decision made by the studios. If that happens it’s because the director wants to create an illusion. Look at singers voices that are dubbed for non singers actors, like Audrey Hepburn. It was years before Marnie Nixon was acknowledged as Audrey’s voice in My Fair Lady

      He just wanted her to let go. I don't think he understood how sheltered her mother kept her. He probably didn't understand why she was so tense... in reality, she was being abused by her mother. Her passion for the art of ballet was being affected by this tension. Clearly the teacher was passionate himself about the art and was willing to try different methods of exposing her black swan. He saw how dedicated she was, how badly she wanted the role, and he gave her a chance to do it despite himself. He was harsh at times, but I think that tough love helped her snap into the role of the Black Swan. When you're at rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up.

    Let's give a lot of credit to Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman for their great performances in this picture. I don't know why films about the dance tend to descend into formula, but they do. I would really like to see a film about the dance that isn't formulaic. There's so much there. For example, the mere fact a person is able to make it into a corps de ballet implies a degree of commitment and dedication that would have put an anchorite to shame. People say, "oh look he's so graceful and beautiful! but what he or she had to go through to look like that makes the death of a thousand cuts seem like a walk in the park.

  • @scottibrown3274

    We’re talking about contrast between Lily and Nina; what they are wearing is something to take notice. Nina is in a lot of white and pink, meanwhile Lily wears a lot of black. It’s not until towards the end of the film that Nina starts to wear gray and black in her wardrobe; towards the end of the film in her final practice session, she’s wearing black tights and a gray sweater or leotard (it’s been a while since I’ve watched this film).
    With the color differences, Nina is suppose to be innocent and naive, while Lily is exciting and kind of mysterious.

    I was reading a review of Black Swan written by actual danders in the Britains Ballet companies and they said that the hairstyles were sort of stereotypical: Nina's such a 'good girl' that she always has her hair tied back even when she's outside and Lily must be easy and free because her hair is out. It was actually a kind of interesting read

    • @triniroma4957

      Why does that bother people??? That she has her hair down??

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For the same reason that some people are bothered that Lily wears mostly black and Nina white - it's a little too obvious and isn't that subtle, saying that someone is free and relaxed because their hair is down, they wear dark colours and based on what they eat. Plus, as someone else argued, if you're rehearsing ballet, meaning you're tired, you're working hard, you're probably sweaty, why would you want you hair getting in you eyes and mouth and sticking to your skin? In a performance where it has to be out for the sake of the performance (i.e. opening scene of Spanish film Talk To Her - which I strongly recommend, like Black Swan it's twisted but fantastic) why? But heck, some people have a problem that Nina wears her hair in a bun even when she's not in rehearsal.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      2wingo Self-control? She wants to be free! I understand that Odette's supposed to be fragile, innocent, virginial and vulnerable, but she's not THAT fragile! She has to show us that she's fallen in love, that she wants freedom, that she is a Queen and that when she dies she's finally taking her life into her own hands. I've always gone with the notion that she's supposed to have a quieter, more lyrical form of strength than Odile. That's why I'm having doubts about Nina. That's all. And it's just my opinion, someday it may change at the drop of a hat.

      Faeries_Xylia 923 i think it's because nina is the better white swan while lily would make a better black. However, the focus of the ballet is odette's tragedy; her evil twin sis just sort of causes it, therefore a good white swan is expected. Besides, leroy did said over and over that nina has "it" in her, it being the things that make a great odile
