This literally happened at our locals last week. We had a newbie, like cards in tin, paper Playmat new, he unfortunately got paired against the one runick stun floodgate player at our locals (who everyone DESPISES playing against) he floodgated him out of the game and banished all his cards and stopped him from doing anything. The newbie left immediately after and will probably not come back. The Runick player literally says ‘it’s Konami’s fault for printing the deck’
But like, it’s locals??? Let people play.

Back when I was playing, I had ABC adventurer deck when it was meta. Went to locals with a buddy of mine and played against a new player running old style blue eyes. I saw he was running flute of summoning dragon and other old cards, which prompted me to purposely not use any adventure cards or pot of prosperities and limited myself to using ABC buster dragon. He won, but thanked me for going really easy on him as it wasn’t his first time fighting adventurer ABCs full powered at that time.

This happened to a friend of mine. He went to a locals, and was very new at Yu-Gi-Oh. He has a very casual deck he liked to play with (I think it was a bare bones Blue-Eyes deck), and of course was stomped in his first duel. He was expecting this, I had prepared him before hand that he likely wasn't going to win with his deck, and he was fine with that. He just wanted to meet new people who like Yu-Gi-Oh and have fun with the game. What got to him though was the person he was playing against, who nitpicked his every move telling him what he did wrong, and even straight up told him his deck sucked and he should stop playing with it. This person apparently soured his feeling on Yu-Gi-Oh so much that he has refused to go to another locals since. He hasn't quit Yu-Gi-Oh, but says he'd rather duel me than "a bunch of try hards" in his words. I really wish that people would respect others playstyles in Yu-Gi-Oh, both casuals and competitive players. Not everyone plays Yu-Gi-Oh for the same reasons, and people shouldn't be told to "stop playing casual trash" or "stop being a meta sheep". People should just be able to come together and enjoy the game we all love.

this is exactly why I don't go to locals. I play Yu-Gi-Oh because I love the anime and only build decks from the anime. None of them are meta. And I'm afraid if I go to my local shop I'll have the same experience. I just wanna play my funny Frightfur deck with demonic toys.

@@6210classick There are very advanced goat format decks that can feel like modern combo decks. If you are unprepared, you probably can get your ass blasted in turn 7. There are also pretty sacky cards like Duo and Trap Dustshoot that feel unfair to play around. Even BLS can ruin the mood due to how game warping that singular card is. Goat format today feels pretty fast, but there is sometimes back and forth depending on the decks. But Goat format isn't the solution to every old yugioh players' problems, and I'm tired of pretending it is.

I’m an old player talking back since blue eyes set released. I played for years and always took it easy on kids and acted it out like in the anime for them and taught them how to play. In appreciation. The owner gave me ten packs a week and held a side tournament for all the newer players and had me show them the way. OFC it wasn’t official but it made it fun for them and when it felt like they were good enough they went to the big boy area. Some still play today.

I'm sorry to hear Alec's experience with Magic was like that. I think he met the very competitive Magic players who act in similar ways to competitive Yugioh players that want to play their deck to shut out their opponents. I hope that if Alec gives Magic another chance, he'll meet more reasonable and understanding players who will have fun playing the game with him.

As a magic player I'm sad that Alec had that experience. I can tell you that commander is NOT the place to go if you want to learn the game. Commander is a high power format and you do win in the way that those players describe.
You need to have balanced games for new players. You could both play precons. I like sealed games for new players since they get the chance to design a deck that is probably fair against another sealed deck.

I agree with Team APS. I myself have found myself playing competitively at the wrong times. Once I noticed most of the players at my locals were new I wanted to help teach them how to play the game. That is why I have had several decks for different styles. I hated being that sweaty player and thus I gave up the competitive style and only play casual. I have had more fun with the switch.

I realized that this concept spans a lot of our lives. Bear with me and my thought train here:
These days, so many hobbies are completely sporterized. People learn every little stat in a video game and every overpowered combo in a card game cause to them, winning is the only way to feel good about what they're doing. But straight up, if our goal is to just do the thing that we like, we'll have fun and we'll get better at it naturally as we do it.
Like, I'd rather have a back and forth, super long duel in MasterDuel and lose than have someone surrender on their first turn. And this applies to so many things in life. Let's not make our hobbies into nothing but stats and results. They're supposed to be FUN. It's okay to just do things you like regardless of the result

This is so important lmao. I just got back into Yugioh and went to my first locals 2 weeks ago. I was nervous as hell, and all the guys helped me. They let me know when I made mistakes, let me undo moves when I forgot certain actions, etc. I know they coulda easily won, but the fact they let me take extra time to learn their cards, get my combos off, etc. made everything so much easier. If I got beat badly in all my games, I might not have the urge to go back to locals cuz my first experience woulda been terrible. They went easy on me, and even now if I go back and they do demolish me, it won't be as bad, because my first experience of having fun is way more emphasized in my brain. Yugioh is a very intimidating game to get into, but is one that is very rewarding long-term. This is why whenever I face new players, I will always go easy on em and help them whenever I can. Great video to make, and hopefully people gain a similar mindset to you guys. Also, locals is just as much about making friends than it is to play, and I doubt anyone wants to be friends with that guy who just stomps on the newbies, let em have fun to, and make locals enjoyable for everybody :)

The idea of "letting their deck do its thing" is exactly why competitive YGO sometimes just isn't fun; one person's deck often just completely fails to function because the opponent just has so many interruptions or floodgates. It's sometimes less of a competition between two decks, more about which deck gets to actually work at all. It leads to complete non-games.

I have had a similar experience in both Yugioh and Magic the Gathering. Even in commander format. At the end of the day it depends on the community in general and knowing who you are playing against to ensure everyone has fun. Both TCG's have their toxic competitive side, but despite that inherent flaw it is still a game. How you play should never be ridiculed, because a persons goal is to have fun in general. I am sorry one of you guys had a bad experience, and hopefully a friendly group of mtg players will come around so everyone can have fun.

It's not just about going easy on new players, but also it's important sometimes to "take their hand" and help them improve, cause at sometime they will need to improve or the sentiment in the store starts to get like "argh that person again". I'm not saying that people should just stomp them for days, no, but that at some point it's more valuable to help them getting better and that can be either showing them how to play better their deck, or showing them a new deck even if it's one that in a larger tournament scene would not be very viable but it's viable at a local level do to the store's meta. Also making the place accessible to newcomers is very good, like try to make them feel comfortable even outside of a game, make them feel like they belong cause sometimes a person might not be new to the game and play well but have a bad experience feeling like they are not really welcomed there.

I think the core of this issue is that Yugioh is structured in a way where being competitive is the way to have a chance at winning the game. Yugioh feels like it sets its game's purpose to win rather than to have fun. The only way you'll have fun experimenting and doing what you want more freely is to find other players that also want to experience Yugioh that way.
What I believe Yugioh needs is a format that is not meant to be competitive but to be fun. A lot people say that it's supposed to be GOAT format but I believe that is just putting current Yugioh's competitive philosophy and turning back the clock. I think Yugioh can use a supported draft format like with battle packs or making regular Yugioh sets draftable. If most commons and rares are useless in a competitive scene, then I think they should make them playable for a draft format. Making more generic cards that can work in multiple decks like old sets did would not only boost a lot of archetypes but create another fun format for the Yugioh community to enjoy!

I don't go easy on newbies. However I will:
    -Have an inviting attitude
-offer gameplay advice, help correct mistakes, etc.
-if I see a play they can make to put them at an advantage that they missed, I will explain what they could have done and give them the opportunity to make it if they wish.
-give them a cheap card or two to improve their strategy
-give them the win so they can get an extra pack
I did this in pokemon which is way different from Yugioh since it's much slower but that's just how I personally help newbies out.

I don't play that much in person but when I do I rarely go easy on my opponent in the sense of not going for the win if I can (not that I'm playing meta decks in the first place), however what I do all the time is to allow take backs. For example, when my opponent tries to destroy one of my monsters that has protection I remind them that it does and let him take that back, same goes for if they try to negate a non once per turn effect.

I had a very weird experience in my locals. I found players willing to help out with my deck, show me good combos, guide me towards cards that do better a better job at what I'm want to do etc etc. But then those same people didn't want to play with me and got all snooty about my cards not being max rarity.
So on one hand I did get help and tips on what to do with my branded deck, but then also got told branded sucks anyway, you should be playing tear (before ban) and didn't want to play against my deck without even giving a reason. Just no without elaborating. What's the point in improving my deck if I'm going to have to hear every 3-4 minutes that branded sucks and after improving it there's nobody to play with.
Kind of makes me wonder what thje point of going to the local card shop even is.

This is why I don't like negates. Effects that trigger when your opponent does something, I think, is way more fair. Like, imagine if every card that said "negate that effect" instead said "if your opponent {instead trigger here}, destroy 1 card once per turn." That way, you're still punishing the opponent, but you're also not stopping them from doing anything entirely. Like, imagine if you tried to search with a body on field, you activate, and then get the search, but your opponent still destroys the body you were going to combo with. That seems much more fair- and more importantly, enjoyable- to me.

I got one of my discord friends to play and were a returning player.
I called myself trying to go easy on em so i played using non archetype decks.
But then i slowly realized what Modern or Masterduel has done to my deckbuilding.
Every deck i had was used to having to worry about getting negated or constantly getting banished
It lost the fun in the duels because my friend couldnt win or barely cause damage, was super obvious when i was trying to go easy
Made em feel like i was be condesending.

I had a bad experience with a card shop while getting into modern yugioh after not playing for 14 years. Match 1 the guy is berating me for not knowing the lingo and literally refused to say what his cards do every time he activated a new card. “Just read it” he said. Match 2 the guy barely even spoke to me, like I’d ask him a question and he’d completely ignore me. First game of match 3 I get OTK’d and the guy called me a scrub. Throughout the match he commented on my cards, saying “that cards lame” “that cards so bad, you shouldn’t play it. Just play (insert meta deck).” Idk if it was a joke or not but after the other 2 matches it was enough for me to get up and leave. I was done and left the shop. Never went back to them, but I do have a local shop I go to now that’s new player friendly and also has a decent competitive scene, and above all good players. Not just win more games good but also good people.

Lately I’ve been playing Branded Gaia or Branded Buster Blader. It’s a lot easier to scale back because I don’t have to push for it on my first turn. It helps slow things down for newbies and I walk them through their cards as well as what to look for to play against. There’s been a lot more engagement and in return, they teach me how to play commander in MTG. Gotta remember we’re still playing card games for fun.

Not necessarily in Yugioh, but the other day I made a mental note to “take it easy” because I was facing against new players. I wondered how many other people share the sentiment, that there are more important things than winning, for me it was that those players would have a better time not losing so fast. Sometimes I’ll handicap myself with “bad” items as a challenge and some people get angry or confused, like why would you ever play like that? Really, they don’t even question why indeed would you want to handicap yourself.

I agree with giving wins like Paul said. I have done that a lot with new players at locals for Digimon. I keep the game really close but allow them to just barely beat me. I walk away knowing that I could have won but instead made someone else’s day.
And it is definitely annoying when other people are standing over you as you do that. It surprises me how they don’t seem to understand why I would intentionally lose that particular game.

I got paired up with a child at locals once. This kid had absolutely 0 idea how to actually play, like he was literally making up effects like they would in the anime (which is partially to blame for people not knowing how to actually play, but I digress).
Anyway, I was playing some Gadget Stun Control deck that would’ve been absolutely no fun for him but instead I spiced things up and started playing with him like he was. Once I had all the gadgets in play I merged them to create the “Gadget Stop Light Formation”, whatever gadget was on top dictated its effect. Red negated something, I forget what yellow did, and green just let everything go. I cycled through the colors after every card was played.
Was this incredibly dumb? Sure. But the kid had a blast. The judge, someone I hung out with, came over and gave me this look like “What the f are you doin?”, and after the match pulled me to the side and said “Gadget Stop Light Formation….?”

Yes, a podcast would be fantastic. This is a crucial social aspect of yugioh to bring up. if my friends I play with didn't understand this concept, I would not have completely gotten back into yugioh. My one bud always brings several decks, sometimes 8, and whenever fighting someone with much less experience than he, he always makes them choose the deck he plays, and the fun for him is figuring out the puzzle of winning that matchup while I learn my deck and feel cool about it.

We decided to go buy a couple new packs and structure decks and give it a try. The free to play games help make the learning curve and "shock to the system" of newbies (like myself) more manageable.
I played schoolyard Yu Gi Oh when the OG cartoon was still running and man eater bug was considered OP. Forgot about it until lockdown, when a pal got me into Duel Links. Duel Links having a more limited and less insane card-list and meta made it easier to get used to some of the new concepts in the game (synchro, link, XYZ etc.).
This made the transition to master duel more manageable. For the first few months, messed about in the lower tiers with fun but non-meta "nostalgia" decks like Blue Eyes, Egyptian Gods and Gaia before gaining the courage to try out more meta builds. This helped massively in build confidence and knowledge of the current mechanics of Yugioh (if not the meta given the different ban-lists) and when I did decide to try out the "IRL" game, it was a much easier move.
What is more annoying to me about the real game is less the learning curve and more how quickly the banlists are updated. Modern Yu-Gi-Oh is expensive and when you do invest in building a deck, you would hope that you can count on being able to get your money's worth out of the deck. Instead, things get banned left and right and given how meta cards hold value based on utility rather than rarity, you are often left with a massive hole in your wallet without getting much play from your deck.

Another thing that newbies have to deal with at locals are predatory traders. I remember the first couple months, these two or three duelists who would immediately flock to me as soon as I walked in the door to ask if I had trades. They would also just pull out lots of my cards and then try and direct my attention to cards they probably didn't really care for but sold them as being potentially meta-defining. It wasn't until someone noticed I got a cheap Branded core in exchange for some fairly expensive secret rares that they pulled me aside and told me I was being scammed.

As a new player trying to get into yugioh it's nice to see experienced players with this perspecitve.I found online has been an unplesant experience because I get thrashed almost every time, and just feel overwhelmed, though im going to try going to enter some locals soon since some people ive met there seem nice . It's not losing that bothers me (as a new player I expect I'm going to lose alot at the beginning since I suck). I don't need nor expect other players to go easy on me to the point of handing me a win, but at the same time getting thrased and feeling like I don't have the oppurtunity to breath or try anything is kind of unfun, and does feel unfair.
I get that modern Yugioh is insane and crazy, and new players will have to face that one way or another, but I don't think you need to throw us in the deep end. I think alot of the experienced players got into it as kids, so some take for granted the fact that they got into yugioh when it was far simpler, and got to see it gradually complexify organically overtime. New players don't have that luxury so they have to process and learn 20 years of evolution and powercreep from the get go, which is a tall order.

I recently started to balance my 2 decks for fun noob friendly but still competent matches against each other. I got my personal deck, and I made a second deck for a "player 2" that I could lend to a friend to play a match. While both decks are competitive on their own, I started to re-balance them together, so that they would be a lot more fun and interactive, instead of just a win by turn 2 or 3 if you go first. That meant countering the other deck really well while also giving enough of a chance and having fun techs instead of the most competitive ones. I'm hoping this is a good way to introduce friends to yugioh, especially because they would not have a yugioh deck themselves and this second one of mine would be a way for them to still experience the game. Basically a VS with good tension, competitiveness, but fun interactive moves, giving a really even and fair experience.

happened to me when I started playing a year ago. I bought a single cyber strike constructed deck and got stomped by some meta decks. This did make me want to win, so next week I came back with a new deck with ghostrick which I ordered cards for, however the people were super impatient, getting frustrated at me for taking too long and I lost all my games, I then gave it 1 more chance and bought 3 crystal beast structure decks and once again was shown no mercy so I just stopped going.

I’ll never forget the first locals I ever went to. Back in 2017 and I had the worst deck imaginable. It was a crumby blue eyes deck that I pieced together with zero idea about the meta. And my first opponent was a really nice guy (who I sadly never saw there again after this night) playing the meta Dark Magician deck during that time and he didn’t know I was a complete noob at first. Probabaly because I at least knew I needed sleeves, deck box, and play mat lol. He went first and you know did the classic DM opening with Rod and set two back row and a circle. Then my first turn happened and I had no idea what to do. He then noticed and ended up helping me and telling what cards I should consider getting to improve my blue eyes deck and how the archetypes work in general. It was really cool of him and it’s a memory I’ll never forget. He still whooped my ass obviously. Not just gonna let me win, but he taught me so much during our round. So then I went back a couple weeks later after improving my deck and doing research and buying the cards I needed and practicing the combos, I felt like a different person going my second time. And played so much better. It was a magical time in my life and I’ll always cherish it. Haven’t been to a locals since 2019 though so it’s been a while haha

The guy wanted to throw because he was leaving but wanted the kid to learn combos, which the kid didn’t know many and he didn’t want to coach him. Just kept asking him “are you sure you can’t summon another monster from anywhere”. Needless to say he was running tearlament and was the first time most of us noticed they had 1800 Atk and another with 2000 or 2100 def. He would play nothing but meta stuff like Thunder Dragons (this was pre ban) and overall did a really poor job at teaching me. Didn’t even explain the concept of a negate, and did a horrible job at explaining other things. All the crushing defeats made me drop the game for a few years instantly until I decided to try again. There’s still things I really hate about YuGiOh today though, and I feel like I’m slowly losing interest in the game again because of people looking at it from pure competitive play

I played a newbie last week. Had 3 structures of saga of blue eyes 60 card deck, incomplete extra deck. I was running pure dark magician w/o illusion of chaos and destroyed him. I kept thinking why is this the one time I get the godly first hand smh. But I kinda went easier game 2 however I had a op hand once again. I hope to see him again. Someone gave him a crap ton of blue eyes support cards and I told him to cut his deck down to 40.

I stopped playing YuGiOh for like 6-7 years but started back up less than a month ago.
I had heard about the meta decks but never actually knew what they did until I went to the locals about 3 weeks ago after I heard about Gate Guardians making a return.
My friend had all the new support and gave it to me to use at Locals and I had a guy my friend was worried about me facing immediately in the first round.
I shook hands with him and the guy had asked me if I was new.
I told him I hadn't played since somewhere in the Pendulum era and he switched out his deck, telling me he'd use a deck that should be a bit more my speed if I wasn't up to date with the current meta.
Pretty sure you're not allowed to completely switch decks in a competitive scene, but a fun duel with Red-Eyes and Gate Guardians took place, and I had a blast with him.
I won the best of three, but the next guy basically OTK'd me the first round with Branded but I managed to make it go to game 3.
In all, seeing someone willing to make a competitive duel event feel more friendly for someone starting new or returning after not playing for a while certainly makes it a bit easier to return to play.

I play Branded and I consciously do hold back when playing against someone that's clearly new or is playing a less powerfull deck, it is very easy to keep my plays simple, and it can still be a fun interactive game that allows them to still learn about things higher tier decks can do.
I wish I could have some form of organized system where we could fit decks in different power levels so people could match eachother in a casual envoironment without worrying about what they're facing against

I think the most important thing we as seasoned players can do with new/returning players can do is encourage them to ask to read cards and to not be scared to call a judge if you do not understand something. A lot of new players sometimes just get to intimated to do that.

I actually played a couple of rounds with a newbie a few weeks ago. I think he was legitimately intimidated by me (because his friend walked up to him before the match and tried to give him a pep talk, where he told him to not get intimidated by me, lol). He seemed like a good kid and was trying to play Cubics. I played my Springans Deck, but I did quite a few misplays, all of which I let roll and we had fun. I still ended up winning, butI encouraged him to keep going and asked him why he picked the deck, what plays he thinks he could have done. What possible tech he could choose for next round and so on. I haven't seen him since (he looked a bit too young to be driving), but I hope to see him again.

Sweats who bring YCS level decks to locals is partly why the card shop they were held in separated them into "junior" and "senior" leagues.
That, and some of the older players were ripping off the younger ones.

I run a competitive deck that is full floodgate-control with hand traps and anti meta strategies. When I do my remote duels with less competitive players, I enjoy having a good duel so I have 3 other decks that are still competitive but it’s less hand trap heavy and less floodgate, more aggressive attacks. That way they can stand a chance with whatever deck they run but they can still lose if I pull off the right combos. They’re decks I enjoy playing so I hope to get better with them, I’d never take them to tournaments (with the exception of maybe one) but I played against a guy who played blue eyes and a guy who played crystal beasts and I play Buster Blader so their boss monsters were completely shut down when my Fusion hit the board and none of their dragon monsters could activate effects. I felt bad. I won but I made the gym very unenjoyable for them. I usually play with my lower tier decks when I duel people like that. But if I Duel a new guy and he’s wiping the floor with me, I request a rematch with my competitive deck and when it’s neck and neck with power, it’s fun.
