  • When painting in cold wax medium and oils, I always start with a few base layers before I add a figure or a face in my paintings. In this video, I will show you how I build up my layers to create textures and a 'busy' background. My paintings are becoming more and more 'mixed media' since I often add pan pastels, soft pastels, inks, neo colour II's but my first layers are always built up like this. You will find the colours I used below. I hope you enjoy watching the process!
Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions on the process!
The colours that I used in this video:
    Base layer 1:
    Permanent Mauve (Daler Rowney)
    Prussian Blue (Daler Rowney)
    Base layer 2
    Bright Yellow Green (Sennelier)
    Intense Turquoise (Charvin)
    Top layer:
    Raw Sienna (Rembrandt)
    Chinese Orange (Gamblin)
    Quinadrone Red (Gamblin)
    Mixed with
    Burnt Umber (Rembrandt)
    Titanium Buff (Daler Rowney)
    Titanium White (Daler Rowney)

Hi John, Thank you, the orange tool is a Messermeister bowlscraper, you can also use a Catalyst wedge no.6 and the water-based cold wax I use is called Powerwax from Powertex

Thank you for the video! It was very informative. I normally paint in acrylics but I feel it's time for a change. I think painting in wax and oil will be an enjoyable learning experience.

I like drawing historic buildings - can I use the cold wax and oil approach?

Yes you could, you can create several textured layers with cold wax and oils and then add less cold wax and more oil when you paint the buildings

How long does it take for your paintings to dry in between layers

I can usually work on the painting the next day, it is not thoroughly dry then but dry to the touch. It depends on how thick your layers are, the humidity of your studio, even the quality of your paints and how much cold wax you mixed with your paints.. work on paper also dries faster than work on panel. You can speed up the drying time by mixing a bit of marble dust into your mix
