A bit late I know, but as a resident with a UK account, I have recently found it cheaper to pay almost everything by card. No bank withdrawal fees of approx 7% so you get charged the exchange date of the day without fees. Much better value and most shops/businesses are happy to swipe a card, meaning cash is reserved for tipping or small purchases

    • @AA-uf3bl

How is that possible, as Barclays states on its website, and I quote, "We'll charge you a 2.99% Non-Sterling Transaction Fee for using your debit card abroad when making purchases, withdrawing cash or when you are being refunded."?

@@chand101989 I used both cards in restaurants ‘shops and garages without difficulty. I’m sure it’s the same in hotels I didn’t try as I was in my Motorhome. If you withdraw cash it’s wise to do so in Türkiye’s equivalent of the Post Office as they do not charge a commission that includes the ATM. If you use other ATM’s the charges can vary from 4% to 8% 😱. Do not use Revolut between 23.59 Hrs Friday until 23.59 Hrs Sunday as their office closes and you may not get such a favourable exchange rate.

Which area of the country do you prefer? This is the first question. I don't like the humidity so the southern coastal areas would be difficult for me, personally. Istanbul is much cooler but I don't meet many expats. In Istanbul, you should also consider your lifestyle. For example, I like drinking beer so I would never live in Uskudar on the Asian side. Didn't find one restaurant serving beer close to the ferries. Kadikoy, Istanbul, close by, has lots of restaurants serving beer but I wouldn't live there either because there are too many students and I'm older. A fish out of water so they say. I like the European side but I wouldn't live in the Fatih or Aksaray areas because of the Arabic culture. Too many men looking at me thinking my wallet is fat and I'm easy. I now live in Sisli in Istanbul and this suits me fine. Away from touristic spots but close to everything.
