I miss the sound of the Baby GM's. I grew up beside the line in Shankill and watched work the commuters before electrification. Even after that they double headed the Wexford express. The sound of my childhood :)
Love the sound of that 567 power plant. GM had a winner with that one. We had a lot of engines here in the US with that prime mover as well. Some of that track towards the end of the video looks like you could put a train on the ground pretty easily. Hope they're working on that.
On this occasion it had been arranged before hand as part of the ITG's event at Downpatrick, you could still try your luck though, the staff can be agreeable.
@Leadplug How do you know it's not one of those mongrel things that sticks and needs to be handled with some force to prevent getting three when you only wanted one.....had that happen plenty of times.
The young fella driving is not used to driving these gms Another trick with these was to release the train brake and apply the loco brake just before the train came to a stop
@Rocketboy1950 Thanks for the video share, that sure sounds very similar, and much louder! I wish they'd get a new life, as the small Irish GMs are effectively retired now.
Engine power is amazing Great video - thanks
Fantastic machine!

Very interesting! It's like someone pushed an EMD AAR stand on its back and made it a desktop control stand, complete with Bakelite throttle handle!

@EWS60008 Maybe when 146 returns to service you can apply for a cab ride if the Downpatrick Railway restart that offer!
Oh my goodness. Didn’t realise they had trains in Ireland. How quaint.
great video
That must be what like the branch lines were back in the day
Wow! Never seen a GM throttle turned on its side and shoved into the dash like that!
Love the sound of a 567!!
Dose the yellow button really have a label "button" at 00:39

Hi I’m 28 and wanting to become a train driver, can anyone give me some helpful insight to how I go about this ?
Irony: watching a video of a train ride when riding the train.
I really ought to get over there and sample Mick rail

Whats the bell? Is it a vigilance alarm?
All I can say is "thats a great vid"

why has he got a BR high vis?

Thanks Mike, yes it is a GM diesel electric locomotive.
@IrishRail123 Beyond the cutting I think(!)
Nice one m8!
Thanks!
Where are ( were) these built ??
General Motors at La Grange, Illinois, USA, in 1962.
I wonder in which place they crashed it lol....
Sounds just like the ones I used to drive. There was a bit of a rumour that some of your retired dogbones were coming over here for a new life.
Just after the cutting, slippy track due to weeds.
triver bro Biting 😊😊😊😇😇😇😇😇
What's the constant clicking tik tok noise?
The speedometer
Driver forgets to take off the locomotive brake at the beginning..

Thats probably the aws thing
