I just followed the video and have crocheted 10 rows of my first ever pineapple stitch! Your description below the video nailed it perfectly about how I felt when I saw this shawl! And, I was totally intimidated when I saw it was the pineapple stitch. I put it out of my mind, thinking I'd NEVER be able to do the pineapple stitch... Let alone a shawl full of them! I saw your video today and got so excited! I knew you'd be clear in your instruction and it just might help me conquer my fear of the pineapple stitch. And you didn't let me down! Thank you SO much! I can't wait until I'm finished and have this amazing shawl to add to my shawls that I love to wear! Yep. I'm hooked on shawls. 😊
oh marlie i love the pineapple designs they are timeless. my great grandma who was blind made this design only and she made some of the most beautiful things. thank you
I started this shawl but confused myself on the 4th row. Thankfully, you were there to save the day by doing this video!! I have to agree with you that reading the chart is much easier than reading the written pattern. Placing the markers was my mistake. Now I'm ready to start over! You are a wonderful teacher keeping your train of thought fluid as well as your crocheting while you are talking - absolutely amazing! Thank you, sincerely.
I just finished making this shawl for my daughter and it came out gorgeous. I've never crochet anything but blankets so if I can crochet this anyone can and the pattern is easy to read. Thank you Marlybird.
Thank you so very much Marly!! I have never been able to understand crochet patterns and you have helped me so very much!! Great tutorial you are such a good teacher and have helped me feel more confident to try even more crochet patters. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
I have to compliment you on not only this beautiful pattern, but the fluidity of your work..you make it look graceful..thank you for your lovely tutorials..they're greatly appreciated ..and I can't wait to make one of these beautiful shawls for my sister for Christmas 😁
Hey Marly!! I just wanted to say thank you for such a thorough video!!! I am a visual and kinetic learner and this video was awesome!! Thank you so much!!
Thankyou so much you are a great teacher. I didn't think I could do this until I saw your wonderful video. You made it so easy to understand and do. Thankyou once again. I hope to see more of your videos.
Madly, thank you sooooo much, your video was very detail and easy to follow along. you are and excellent instructor, again thank you, I will be watching more. have a bless day.
thank you so much for this video i have seen many videos and they are so complex for me but yours is so easy to understand and the pattern is very beautiful making this for my best friends birthday that is coming up she is a big fan of crocheting i know she will love this thanks so much for the video
I only learnt how to crochet three months ago, and I started this shawl yesterday via the written pattern and I'm surprised at how easy an intermediate pattern is for me to read! Definitely going to try some more challenging designs after this! Awesome pattern :)
Thank you! I tried to make The Big Easy Scarfl from Red Heart, and I found at least two mistakes in it. So frustrating for a beginner. I started over TEN TIMES and finally decided the instructions had to be wrong. It says to chain 23. Then to start stitching in the FOURTH chain from the hook. Then continue across in each chain to end up with a total of 21 stitches. HOW is that possible with only 20 chains? 23 minus 3 is 20. There is another mistake, but I won't go into it here. What does one do to have the pattern corrected if it really is wrong and it isn't just me? Would appreciate any help. I am going to try this pattern since the other is so problematic. Will it work with the MEDLEY yarn?
Marley, I absolutely love your tutorials both for crochet and knitting. I made this shawl twice, for gifts, and the came out beautifully. Would you consider doing a crochet sock tutorial. My hands can’t handle knitting with thin needles but with crochet I can use an ergonomic hook. 🧦🙏💐
Row 17 ends..next should come an EVEN row; but instructions say repeat rows 11-17; that would mean Row 17, Row 11,12 13,14,15,16,17. Is this correct? You follow an ODD row with an ODD row?
I would like to know if there is a way to expand this to make it wider at the beginning (for bigger women)? I am still new to crochet so I couldn't figure out the multiple to do this. Can you help?
Thanks for such a great video. I have a question. You are using 4 ply yarn. I'm wanting to make a lighter weight yarn for a wedding shawl. Will this make the width/length smaller? If it does, what would you suggest to keep the dimensions the same?
Marly thank you for making this video. I had fun making this design, but the only thing is i haven't been able to complete the shawl. I'm quite confused on how to finish up the shawl if you have any tips or anything that will be of help that would be amazing.
if is too much to ask you ,and to make sure I am doing it right , how many pineapples are in total ??? and in measurements how many inches from the biggining to the end, thanx
Thanks much for this great video! I love this pattern, and can’t wait to see how it comes out when I finish. Your video is so helpful. Very carefully instructed and fun. Thank you again!!
So beautiful!!! You’re doing such a great job teaching this! I’m so thankful!❤️ I try to follow patterns on my own as a new crocheter but visually this has helped tremendously! I NEVER thought I’d be able to make my first shawl let alone stitch pineapples in the shawl.. lol but you have made this so easy to catch on. Thank you Marly! ❤️❤️🧶👍
nearly done with the shawl. Thank you for your tutorial. I'm a little confused about the fringe. Is it only on the sides or does it also go across the beginning chain end as well? Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi Marly! Thank you for this video! I'm curious about the Increase-shell. The instructions says "Work (2 dc, [ch 2, dc] twice, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated ch-space." In the video and in the pattern chart, you've done 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch2, 2 dc, ch2, 2dc (2 shells). Is there a reason for going with the [ch 2, 2dc] instead of the [ch 2, dc}? I'm new to chrochet and want to make sure I'm reading patterns correctly. I'm not sure if I just don't get it, or if you altered from the pattern, OR if the pattern has 'dc' instead of '2dc'! :) Thank you!
Hi Marly! I've completed this shawl and just cannot get the gist of how it's worn. Where does the 30 stitch beginning row go? It seems smaller than it needs to be, to be worn like the model is showing. Also, does that little 30 chain row get fringe? Thanks so much! :)
Hi, I'm very new at crochet and I've been working on this shawl and it's going ok but it just seems really small, I'm almost finished with the four sets of rows 11-17 and is just small and I just realized I didn't pay any attention to the gauge, if I just keep repeating the rows 11-17 will it work out till I get it the size I want, or should I start over
Terra Kuhn hello. Try to follow the chart. If you dont know how to read ir watch the video on how to...chart. But however, you cant start from row 11 to 17 since it has increases eventhough they are same stitches.
Hey Marly my name is Evelyn and I'm suck!!! I'm a beginner. I'm doing row 11. I did the 4 chains, I did the shall, 2 chains then it follows the double. Do I all 9 in that stitch?
Hello! Thank you for this wonderful video for a beautiful shawl! Even I can follow your movements and understand how to do it although I'm a beginner :) However, I have a question. Since I'm not in the USA, I can't find Red Heart soft yarn. I'll try to find a yarn that's similar to it in thickness, etc. and I'll use a 5.5 mm hook (because I crochet a bit tight). Do you think I can get the gauge?
Hi Marly....Love this shawl looked really difficult to do but after watching your video seems very easy....my question is could it be completed with a lighter weight yarn like a DK or even a fine weight Thank you for all that you do for us Linda
Thank you soo much for showing me how to do this. I'll be honest I was confused on my own and the way you explained it made it crystal clear! Do you take request for tutorials?
HI Marly, yes I loved it since I first saw it, thank you so much for this video, I have wanted to make this shawl for a while now, I started and gave up a few times, so happy I came across your video, I already subscribed to your channel, just one question in regards to the increase shell it states (2dc, [ch 2,dc] twice (doesn't that mean to ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc instead of ch 2, 2dc?) that is the only part that I am a tad confused about . If I was crochet the shawl this way, would the shawl be altered in any way. Thanks for the lace pattern, it does make it a bit easier to understand.
This pattern I've been trying to get for years, when I found it in a book I bought years ago. I've put it down a couple times, and am trying it again. And again, around row 10, when a new pineapple starts in the center, I can't seem to get the pattern to make sense. I'm going to rip it out, start again with you. Thx for making the video, I just wish you had gone a few more rows, when the 9 dc's get introduced.
hi. how do I measure and increase size for a shawl for women size versus size on patterns? First shawl for someone battling breast cancer and she is a women size. She is a school mates wife so I do not know her exact size. Any tips and hints would be appreciated. thanks
This shawl rather large but you would measure across the top for the width of the shawl. You would just continue repeating the full row repeat to make it larger but IMHO, it doesn't need to be much larger than it is. I am a size 2x and it fits me as written.
I did a rectangle type shawl from yarn free patterns and it did not fit and average size women it was definitely for slim no chest size. I used the correct yarn, hook and my guage is normal so it made me wary to give one away. 6 months new to crocheting so thanks. ..Love all u do. It's inspirational.
Hey I love your videos but I especially love this sidewalk shawl.. I really cant read or follow the diagram of this shawl im lost could you please do the rest of the tutorial to finish the shawl with me please? I really would love to finish it and your a brilliant teacher! Thanks
Georgia Ludlaim Hi dear, I am thrilled you like the videos. I know that you can do it with my help in the video and the accompanying crochet chart I had made. Once you get past the rows I showed on the video you will repeat the repeat section to increase the shawl. The repeat section is the shaded in area on the chart. Take a look and see if that helps ;-)
Denise Miller I came to the comments looking for the same information. since it just says repeat twice: [ch 2, dc], it seemed it should be a 2ch + double crochet repeated instead of 2 dc repeated. I'm going to go with it as it's in the video. :) So helpful to see it in a video as patterns can be somewhat confusing at times.
your example looks a lot smaller than as shown in the Red Heart pattern. By that I mean the stitches look looser in the picture of the shawl on the Red Heart pattern. Why is that?
+Mama Spins The original was done using a bamboo blend yarn and the stitches had stretched over time. My sample was brand spanking new and it will stretch too as time goes on. But honestly, I had the original in with me and the difference in size was very minimal.
Marley bird, the finish shells? Are confusing me terribly Is there a diagram for that? The written part of finishing shells is confusing to me 😳😪 help!
I really wish you would of stayed crocheting just a bit longer so we (I ) could of got the just of restarting the pattern , and how you recognize when to start the pineapples
Marly, I can only get as far as this video goes.. the pattern is very hard to read. Can you do a video completing the entire shawl. I could follow along with this but after you stopped, I cant go any further.. please make video of entire shawl!!@
+Dawn Lietz I'm looking at the pattern is it has you working through row 17 then you will Repeat Rows 11-17 four more times for Rows 18-45 Then, for rows 46-50: Repeat Rows 11-15
okay, I'm here to help :-) In the video I worked up through row 10...to get you started on the pattern. Then you follow the pattern from there to work through row 17. In the video I didn't demonstrate rows 11-17 but I pulled in different samples that were worked up through those rows. Once you get to row 10, you will be able to follow along in the pattern as all the stitches and the placement of the stitches and the reason those stitches are where they are has all been explained in the first 10 rows. Remember, as you work more and more rows you will be increasing the number of pineapples you are making. Like I showed you in the video, you start with 2 and you eventually get up to *I think 5 or 6...I don't have my original sample in front of me*. If you want a little more instruction, check out the chart video I did for this pattern and the chart I had made. Maybe getting a visual representation of the pattern words will help you "see" what you are doing vs. following a pattern and getting lost. Don't get frustrated. I know you can do this. Any moment now the pattern and the stitches is going to click and you will get the A-Ha moment. Hang in there.
+Marly Bird I don't understand why I am not getting it. Are you saying that rows 11 to 17 are basically what I did for row 10? And how do I know where to put the pineapples?
You have really found your calling. What a great teacher.
I just followed the video and have crocheted 10 rows of my first ever pineapple stitch! Your description below the video nailed it perfectly about how I felt when I saw this shawl! Great teacher.

Beautiful!!!
Can this pattern begin with a single pineapple?
So that it has a pointed tip rather than the flat 2 pineapple base.
Thank you so much 😊
how lovely i will have a try to make one thank you for sharing

Its really nice but its too fast for me I keep it rewind and its confusing I stop in row 12 i dont know if I'm going to continue 😥😥😥😥
Marly thank you for making this video. I had fun making this design, but the only thing is i haven't been able to complete the shawl. I'm quite confused on how to finish up the shawl if you have any tips or anything that will be of help that would be amazing.

Hi, I'm almost finished with mine! I want to know if you applied the fringe to both rows or did you only apply the fringe to one row?
Shar Marie My crocheter did it to one row...and it is GREAT! :-) Can't wait to see yours! Please don't forget to show me. facebook.com/marlybird
nearly done with the shawl.
:) Thank you!
thank you soooo much! I repeatedly got stuck on row three. I finally realized I was reading the instructions for increase shell incorrectly.
Hi Marlybird, your viedo is awsome. After your viedo stops on row ten how do I continue the rest of the way? I'm not good at following patterns.
Hi Marly! I've completed this shawl and just cannot get the gist of how it's worn. Where does the 30 stitch beginning row go? It seems smaller than it needs to be, to be worn like the model is showing. Also, does that little 30 chain row get fringe? Thanks so much! :)

Hello! Thank you for this wonderful video for a beautiful shawl! Even I can follow your movements and understand how to do it although I'm a beginner :) However, I have a question. Great tutorial!!!! I am on my 4th one. Any idea what I can do to make it fit a 12 year old child? Smaller hook?
+Sharon Keating I would just stop earlier. Don't change anything else :)
Hi Marly....Love this shawl looked really difficult to do but after watching your video seems very easy....my question is could it be completed with a lighter weight yarn like a DK or even a fine weight Thank you for all that you do for us
Linda
Thank you soo much for showing me how to do this. I'll be honest I was confused on my own and the way you explained it made it crystal clear! Do you take request for tutorials?
Jennifer McGee I certainly do! I am happy it helped.
How much yarn & what size hook do I need
Very beautiful thank you💅💞💅💞😘
HI Marly, yes I loved it since I first saw it, thank you so much for this video, I have wanted to make this shawl for a while now, I started and gave up a few times, so happy I came across your video, I already subscribed to your channel, just one question in regards to the increase shell it states (2dc, [ch 2,dc] twice (doesn't that mean to ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc instead of ch 2, 2dc?) that is the only part that I am a tad confused about . Hello Marly :-) love it thank u very much. I have a question how can make it bigger, what rows do I repeat? Hope u can help me tia :-)
+angelyiris4ever you would continue to repeat the same rows you do to make it the size as written.
Thanks for the video :) this is on my to do list. HOWEVER. Is there a pattern for your cardi that you are wearing :) ?!
If i need to start it wider than yours 30 ch so what to do? 🌺
How many yards are required?
It’s very pretty stitch. I just don’t get the pineapple. Can’t see any pineapples, but would like to do the shawl, it’s veryy pretty
This pattern I've been trying to get for years, when I found it in a book I bought years ago. I've put it down a couple times, and am trying it again. And again, around row 10, when a new pineapple starts in the center, I can't seem to get the pattern to make sense. I'm going to rip it out, start again with you. Thx for making the video, I just wish you had gone a few more rows, when the 9 dc's get introduced.
thank u love your work u do make it easy love all the free videos thanks u lorraine gamble
Beware!!! This pattern is no longer on the Red Heart website. Does anyone know where I can get it? Thanks.
I have started this shawl sooo many times & have a hard time with the repeats. I have never do a pineapple pattern.
I would like to find out about the pattern. I am unable to get the written pattern.

great video you are fantastic thanks for the video
thank you very much.
Marly Bird it feels to small can I keep going 11-17 until I like size?
You absolutely can do that.
after row 17 Im not sure about the repeats because of how the picture guide looks
I love your videos .. I'm going to subscribe to your channel .. :)
Maria Taule Thanks you Maria! Please tell your friends ;-)
I will.. God Bless and more powers .. :)
Very nice
Where can I find help with row 18?
Question, On row 2 after I ch 4, why does Marly yarn over twice for the 1st. dc, in the Increase shell?
I might have made a mistake. It’s hard to crochet, talk and teach at the same time. :)
If you look again, Marly realises she has made a mistake and takes the second yarn over off
Hey I love your videos but I especially love this sidewalk shawl.. I really cant read or follow the diagram of this shawl im lost could you please do the rest of the tutorial to finish the shawl with me please? I really would love to finish it and your a brilliant teacher! Thanks

Okay thankyou! :)
How many pineapple rows did you make for your shawl
Thanks for the tutorial
I made this for my sister and dear god I hope it fits.
Hi Marly, I'm searching for the chart of this patern but I can't find it. Can you tell me where I can gent it?
Michelle Villeneuve : I think you'll find that at the beginning of the video she says to get the pattern from ; redheart.com . It's free to download!
Demmi Morelle thank. It was ont with the free pattern, but i found it on Pinterest.
I was thinking this shawl might look awesome in the new Super Saver Ombre yarn, with solid color fringe.
I am confused on the 2nd row for the shell increase Work (2 dc, [ch 2, dc] twice, When I watch you all I see is 2 dc,ch2, 2dc 4 times. am I wrong
The instructions read: Increase-shell = Work (2 dc, [ch 2, dc] twice, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated ch-space. So you will end up with four sets of 2dc.
thank you
Denise Miller I came to the comments looking for the same information. since it just says repeat twice: [ch 2, dc], it seemed it should be a 2ch + double crochet repeated instead of 2 dc repeated. I'm going to go with it as it's in the video. :) So helpful to see it in a video as patterns can be somewhat confusing at times.
Don't forget to take a look at the chart I had made too. It might help to see it in that way ;-) th-cam.com/video/MDlNEgo4hLY/w-d-xo.html

Oh I thought that was the reason. The pattern is very pretty and I enjoyed your video so I will give it a try. Thanks for your input:)
How much yarn do you need
New family ❤️❤️
Marley bird, the finish shells? Are confusing me terribly Is there a diagram for that? The written part of finishing shells is confusing to me 😳😪 help!
I really wish you would of stayed crocheting just a bit longer so we (I ) could of got the just of restarting the pattern , and how you recognize when to start the pineapples
Marly, I can only get as far as this video goes.. the pattern is very hard to read. Can you do a video completing the entire shawl. I could follow along with this but after you stopped, I cant go any further.. please make video of entire shawl!!@
Yes, please!
Yes.
how big is this shawl.
I did rows 1 through 10. It says to repeat rows 11 through something. I am confused. Is row ten all I do for the rest of the shawl?
+Dawn Lietz I'm looking at the pattern is it has you working through row 17 then you will Repeat Rows 11-17 four more times for Rows 18-45
Then, for rows 46-50: Repeat Rows 11-15
Ugh. I'm still confused. This video Does not show you anything past row 10 so how am I supposed to repeat 11 to 17?
okay, I'm here to help :-) In the video I worked up through row 10...to get you started on the pattern.
Marly I printed out the chart. Works wonderfully!! Thanks so much!
