Thanks for the shout out, buddy. Very moving sentiments. I’m another one that got started building with my Dad. ‘58 Merc, when I was seven years old. Have a great Christmas.
Granddaddy got me started on model planes and boats. Dad gave me a model car and surprisingly I wasn't interested. I got over that though. Built a robot from an Erector set once, but that's another story 😮.
Me and my brother used to build models together as kids and built some of the craziest things you could imagine 🤣 He now has untreatable cancer and if it keeps going the way it's going we will loose him in less than a year 😔 This kinda loss is gonna be hard, so I kinda get being choked up 🙏🏻 GOD HELP US ALL 🙏🏻🇺🇸
My grandfather built a massive train set when I was about 6 or 7 years old. He taught me how to make trees with flocking and wire. The set up had a complete town and everything. I still have a tree somewhere but no idea whatever became of the train set up. Things went on from there..table top gaming and then models...tons of other crafts as well.
Thanks for the shout out Dave! I have to do another card shout out video, I will answer your question then but mine was my brother and I may get choked up talking about him too. Nothing wrong with showing love for the family and shedding a tear or two my friend. Thanks for sharing!
Great video, my friend 😊 It may take me a minute, but I'll try to get a video response out before 2025 hits if possible, but basically my dad got me started in the 80's before I was a teenager (born in '73 here), and I am fully aware of hoe blessed I am to still be able to share this hobby with him. Merry Christmas, my friend ✌️🎅
Merry Christmas Dave!! Thanks for the kind words. And great Christmas cards from the others too! Thanks very much for sharing your story. Very cool. I always love hearing people’s backstories from the hobby. And a great photo!!
MY POP'S turned me onto building kits as he built himself. In the summer my Dad and I would decide on a movie to see, then after head to Jerry's Hobbies in Binghamton NY. My 1st kit was Aurora Frankenstein and built that as a 8 yr old in 1965. Thanks for Sharing this Heart Felt video. Woody, I got ya by a couple yrs in age, but we grew up in a Great time my friend. Merry Christmas to You and Your's
I got started at six years old. Santa gave me three model kits for Christmas, two snaps and a glue kit, I was instantly infected and have never been cured.
Great video Great question, it wasn't that long so don't worry about it. Very Very sorry for your loss my friend 😢 thank you for sharing made a little water come out of my eye. Take care my friend.
Thanks for sharing your story Dave, and allowing us to "meet" your family. My current build of the AMT Ladder Chief is taking me back to the first model I got - Christmas of 1971. My dad and I built it together - which is to say I assisted! :D But it still a cherished memory, and one that I think of every time I sit at the bench, regardless of the kit I am working on. Merry Christmas!
Great shoutout and great background on yourself, your family and how you got into the hobby Dave! Very heartfelt and hearing about the family, that is awesome 🙏
Awesome Christmas cards and great question! My dad inadvertently got me into building models. I was fascinated with an International cab over and trailer he built when I was little. I did a tribute build to it earlier this year on my channel. Still have the one he built too. Merry Christmas Woody!🎅👍
You are most welcome for the card. Great card shout outs. It was truly awesome to see you feel the connection of family. Brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for sharing, Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Nice shoutouts Dave. Very touching video, my eyes got wet. The Turbo Go is really cool, I love the box art. Cool community question, I remember watching my Mom build models when I was a small kid but I couldn't tell the stories I don't think. It's tough talking about Family that's no longer with ya. Have a Merry Christmas Dave.🎅🎄👍👍
Thanks for sharing your story, Dave. Be thankful you had the good times that you did. You'll always cherish the memories. I got my very first model for my 7th birthday in 1967, which was the first time I ever laid eyes on a model car. I was hooked from the very start. My first stepfather got it for me, but then was always "going to" show me how to put it together. It never happened. But I wasn't deterred, and tried it myself. Needless to say it was a disaster, and that kit is long gone. I was on my own, as I had no other family members or friends who built model cars. But my love for cars was the driving force, and I kept trying. Finally built my first one from start to finish in 1970. Been doing it ever since. In my later teens, I was ridiculed for building models by my grandfather (dad's dad). He said I should put my "toys" away seeing as I was a young adult. This coming from the man I idolized, really hurt my feelings. But it still didn't stop my model building. I'm the oldest of my siblings, of which the other 4 are girls. Not much help there either. I've had to learn most everything on my own over the years. I just started watching TH-cam videos in the last month or so, and just set up an account about 10 days ago. I really like and enjoy this community. Lots of good people I've watched videos of so far. I hope to learn even more from them. Thanks again for the question. I hope I didn't get too long-winded with my comment.
I completely empathize with you Dave. I’ve lost both parents, a sister, a nephew and many more of my beloved family 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾Your honesty and words really hit home with me. My parents got me started into model building. That was one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received. God bless and Merry Christmas 🙏🏾💯🙌🏾🔥🎁
Use to buy .50 cent boat models with my brother then we would take them to the pond and we would have a battle with our BB guns now I wish I had all of those models now
Thanks for for sharing your story with us Dave. Sorry to hear what happened to your brother's. Very sad. Almost made me teary eyed😢. Four of my closest coworker's all pasted away at the age of 49. I felt the same way you did at age 50😮. Great story on how you got started in modeling. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎄
Frank @franksmodelworks mentioned this video, so I watched it after his. I think he's right, our good memories of those we've lost is a gift...even when we tear up thinking how much we miss them. I've been building models as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is building a tiny little World War I fighter with my mom in the kitchen. Maybe I was 5? I was in kindergarten and I can see her in my mind's eye helping me paint it with Testors enamel. I think that kit was a oddball scale only like 5-10 parts. I can remember being very young and always going to the model section of the KMart where they had balsa wood kits. My first balsa kit was a P-40, Comet or Guillows, I built with my dad. I can remember trying to get it to fly in our front yard (unsuccessfully because of the pound of colored dope on the poor thing). I had to be under 10 because we moved before I turned 11. I used to have all sorts of Tamiya armor and figures, like the Quad with 25pdr field gun and a Grant tank. The Desert Rats were cool. I think I was 7, or turning 7, and I begged for my grandma to get me the British Desert Rats soldier kit (she did). I never painted any if them, just glued them together and played with them. To this day, I am fascinated by the Desert War. I never built model cars until very recently, and then only to test out colors for my 1:1 car. I was always interested in cars because of my dad, but had my own interests, Mazda rotaries and MOPARs. Fords are okay. My dad was into Alfas. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
Nice shout outs. You had me tearing up. My brothers were a Huge reason that I got into models'. I'm the youngest and wanted something in common with them. Something to talk about. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for sharing
