- Don't visit Saigon if you don't want to fall in love with the city. I moved into a new apartment and learned where locals eat drink and shop!
Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City, is the largest city in Vietnam and one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in Southeast Asia. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the energy and buzz of the city, with its bustling streets, colorful markets, and delicious street food.
During my stay in Saigon, I explored the city's many attractions, including the historic Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, and the beautiful Notre-Dame Cathedral. I also took a food tour and tried some of the most delicious local dishes, such as pho, banh mi, and fresh spring rolls.
But what really made me fall in love with Saigon was the people. I found the locals to be friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help. I also met some expats who had been living in Saigon for years and who shared their experiences and tips with me.
After a few days in Saigon, I knew that I didn't want to leave. So I started looking for apartments and soon found a great place in the heart of the city. The apartment was spacious, modern, and affordable, and it had everything I needed to live comfortably.
Now, I'm seriously considering living in Saigon for a while, to explore more of the city and the surrounding areas, to learn more about the culture and the people, and to experience the vibrant lifestyle that Saigon has to offer.
In this video, I'll share more about my experience of visiting Saigon, the things I loved about the city, and the reasons why I'm considering living there. I'll also give you some tips and advice on how to make the most of your stay in Saigon, whether you're a tourist or an expat.
So if you're curious about Saigon and want to know more about this amazing city, make sure to watch this video and subscribe to my channel for more travel and lifestyle content.
You can support my work at / ayngelina where I share tips that don't make it into videos and behind the scenes content.

Thank you for the video... I first traveled to Vietnam in 1997 and have been back many times. I like Saigon over Hanoi, Hanoi is very noisy. Many folks on mopeds are constantly honking their horns, which gets old fast. Please enjoy your stay in VN, I plan on retiring in Saigon in the next few years. 🍲☮
Thank you! Do you have any other tips?
Congratulation!! Your Vlog absolutely is a hidden gem, which send a lot of motivation to these people who want to live in Saigon. Thank you 🥰
Thank you so much for leaving such a kind comment, it means a lot to me.
Great video. Looks like it was a great idea to stay longer.
Why leave when you’re still having fun 😊
Great video and new food perspective..
Thank you so much, I am loving all of the traditional Vietnamese foods
I just love all of your videos I love to travel so it helps me a great deal
That’s so nice of you to say
Thanks for your great travels to promote my country throughout the world. Enjoy your trip! Welcome to Vietnam 🇻🇳❤️! Yeah
Thank you so much! We rented a motorbike to drive from south to north - it's truly an adventure!
Looks nice ! The coffee seems interesting for sure
Once you put coconut milk in your coffee you’ll never want dairy again!
that looks so ace, especially loving that outside cafe hangout right by the traffic. And the walk back inside with businesses, just seems amazing. This place has changed so much since the war.
It’s so different than when I was there in 2008 but every place changed, even Cuba can’t stay frozen in time 😊
Thanks for sharing the video.
My pleasure
Such a great video! I am moving to Saigon, and this video made me even more excited. I was wondering if you could share more information about the Airbnb. I would love to stay there!
Yes of course! I’ve already talked to her and she’s ok with me giving her WhatsApp number privately. Send me a message at Ayngelina on instagram and I’ll give you her number. She is an amazing host and it’s an awesome neighborhood
Ho Chi Minh city is vibrant and never sleep, you'll never get bore live in that city. Great video overall, thanks for sharing with us.🥰
Thank you! I really want to return soon. Any ideas for what neighbourhood I should stay?
@@ayngelina as a expats I think you should stay in d1, it's a central and close to everything. 😊
That’s where we were last time for six weeks. We liked it but could move on, I was thinking D3….
@@ayngelina d3 seem like a good idea, d2 is ok too.
Hi. I've been living in HCMC. Lovely to meet you. Thank you for falling in love with my country. I hope you make more videos soon🥰
I have four videos so far on he city, three are published and one more this Saturday!
Usually I don't comment, I just watch videos, but since you mentioned Canada, I have to say, Canada is the best country in the world, but I really miss the excitement in Saigon, Here in Canada live is so repetitive that you lost that zest for life . Saigon is chaotic and crazy but somehow, mentally I felt peaceful when I'm there, maybe there were too much distractions on the street you forget all the sadness and worries and focusing only on the chaos around you. Here in Canada it's so peaceful that you have to sit and write sad poems to your cat .
I think Canada can be lonely for foreigners because it doesn’t have the same culture on the streets. Where are you in Canada?
@@ayngelina YES. Hello.
~ Thank you. AYNGELINA..
~ I.LO VE YOU. VIET NAM.👍
This is problem with most western cities. They regulate the city to death so you can't do jack all. For example, in Sydney, Kings Cross use to be really lively place, but after a few incidents of random fights and one in particular where a young man died, they implemented a policy which basically shutdown Sydney nightlife (not only Kings Cross). The nightlife in Sydney has never really recovered. Also, you'll never see street food like Saigon in western cities due to health and safety regulations. Its kind of weird, Vietnam is communist country, but in many ways it has more freedom than Western countries. I guess the trade off is Western cities are generally safer.
@@MrAkaacer Vietnam is safer than the US, In Vietnam no one is allowed to own a gun except the police. If found out, they will go to jail very seriously.
Yeah your taxed to death in Canada
Love that apartment complex and having access to all those businesses. Would have loved to participate in helping those businesses. Also that pork soup looked amazing. Love putting those donuts into the soup.
You can understand now why I didn’t want to leave District 1. Those donuts are called cakwe in Indonesia although it’s a Chinese fried dough so actually you see them all over Asia but the super interesting part is that they are always called chak-way but each country spells its differently due to their language.
@@ayngelina yes, can completely understand why you stayed. Makes travel so much fun when you get to experience life with the locals.
This is awesome and useful, hope to see your vlog in Hoi An.
I do! It’s a long one because I loved it there. Still working on the edit but I have one for the city and another for street food.
Loved this video
Thank you so much!
Ayngelina, another great video. Very informative.
I knew you would love Vietnam. Still waiting for that shout out! 😢😂😂😂
Haha ok Michael what’s a recommendation for Hanoi. I’ll include it in that video.
@@ayngelina oh your good! I never went to Hanoi.
But here’s a good tip. Don’t end up in the Infamous Hanoi Hilton! You wouldn’t like the food
LOL I had to look that up!
Wow, I just stumbled upon your video. Surprisingly, that's the building I stayed in during my trip to VietNam. After 30 years of living aboard, i wanted to feel like the local, that's why I stayed there. The building is old, but you are right at the center. If you go around the G20 store, there will be a speak easy bar. I love that place.
Very cool! Do you remember the name?
Loved the video! Visiting Saigon soon from Canada too!! It’s supposed to rain the whole time hahah
No don't worry about rainy season, it rains for an hour maybe two but otherwise you'll be fine. That said I did just have my Halong Bay trip cancelled because of a tropical storm, thankfully I used a great travel agent and she got me a full refund no issues.
This building looks so cool !! What a great way to feel the local vibe while still being well located for food and parks. I will definitely try the coconut milk in my coffee !!
I will never go back to regular dairy if I can help it, it's so so good.
Absolutely Outstanding
Thank you so much 🙏
wow wonderful video
Thank you 🤗
A good video is details visiting Vietnam.
Thank you for watching!
That’s right I love the way u say Sải Gòn!
Thank you!
The Nguyen Thai Binh neighbourhood is one of the oldest in the city and was Saigon's first "Chinatown", a lot of great food to be found in and around there! Thanks for the vid!
Oh wow I didn’t know that. I really love it there, so many good spots
Coffee is a good price in Saigon or I would say in Vietnam, compared to NY where a cold middle coffee cost $4 (Dunkin Donuts).
I don't know yet if you already have tried Sầu riêng known as DURIAN at the beginning it's nothing pleasant but after the second
or third time you will not stop eating that delicious tasty fruit. Love your blogs Ayngelina!
Oh thank you! I have had durian in Indonesia and have a video about it but I am curious to see how it’s different in Vietnam. Already I can see that pineapple here is sweeter and so are the mangoes.
you gonna get so much more love from the people if you learn vietnamese! Trust me :)) nice videoo
I am really trying because people are so nice here and I feel bad that I am pronouncing everything wrong.
Love your video, remind me of the time I lived in HCM city some 20 years ago, and coincidently, I also lived in Canada for more than 10 years, so I can feel what you mentioned of life in Canada, maybe someday I will end up back to VN again as a foreigner like you, who knows :)
I briefly visited 15 years ago and wow it was different so I can only imagine what your perspective would be going back.

It was really hard to leave
Saigon alway welcome you. Thank you

I'm living in Cuenca😊but am interested in visiting Bangkok-Vietnam. Not sure I could take the heat, but for that food... Thanks for the great vids!❤
It depends on where you live as the weather drastically changes, kinda like the sierra vs the coast. A lot of people seem to head for the hills. In a few weeks you’ll see in the peak of summer we head for the hills and are actually cold in Dalat.
I also have a quick Bangkok trip for a visa run to share. Unbelievably it was hotter there.
@@ayngelina Thanks for that very helpful info! I'm really enjoying this series. Be safe!

Please please please do more videos like this about Vietnam. We love to hear more Westerner's perspective about life in our country. If you could also explore our cuisine (food other than Pho or Banh Mi), that would be great too. I'm looking forward to watching your future vlogs. I'm so grateful to have found this gem. Thank you for falling in love with Saigon.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I will absolutely have more to come and food is my favourite way to explore. But you must promise to be patient with my pronunciation as I know it’s so terrible.
@@ayngelina
Yes, I promise :D
You will be fine and your Vietnamese will get better the longer you live there. I have witnessed so many Americans settled down in Vietnam, and they speak and eat just like the locals that I almost thought they were Vietnamese in their past life.
There are many channels like that on TH-cam that you could connect and do collaboration with (in the future, maybe). I'm sure Vietnam will love you as much as you love her.
Oh thank you! I’m Canadian and I can see how so many people would be happy to live here.
Welcome!
Thank you so much! It is wonderful here.
Just found your videos, and find them great and very informative. Going there in March, a question I keep on having is regarding bathrooms when out in the night market and on the street, how does that work? Are there public restrooms?
So Saigon is the most western influenced and you can expect bathrooms in markets in buildings, restaurants and of course you can always pop into Starbucks or McDonalds.
As you go north there are fewer western chains but coffee shops reign and they always have bathrooms and most tourist sites have them.
But bring your own tissues and you may need small bills to tip the attendant who keeps it clean. I drink 3L of water a day so I'm always looking for a bathroom and never had a problem. Locals understand "toilet" and will point you in the right direction.
Thank you so much for your help@@ayngelina 🤩!
I love Vietnam, we'll be back there this August!

Hello, how are you? Nice to see your video? Where are you from, I am from Cambodia 🇰🇭 Did you know Cambodia? Have a nice day💕
I went to Cambodia in 2008 but I am hoping to go soon, either this fall or winter. Where should I go?

bạn đúng rồi!
I came to the US when I was 11 yrs old. I remember the chaos and vibrant energy of the streets and all the food. My goal is to return for my first visit when I turn 50. How fast time flies!
I'm really drawn to cultures that have that energy in the street, we don't have that in Canada for obvious weather reasons but also cultural too. But I feel like because we don't have that outdoor connection, we also miss a community connection.
Seeing that but the truth is not so. The leadership is very bad and dirty, you can prove that the places I go to the cities, the street corners are unhygienic, the food I don't dare to eat because of the food processing toxic chemicals, people who just came to live they don't know but after living there for a long time, now they know..that’s all i can say it is not what i heard.

I’m in Hanoi right now and I think it’s the worst week for heat.
If you want to live in HCM city , I think It would be a good choice , you may have interesting experience and friendly friends , Most of inhabitants in this city can speak English and language is not a barrier . Daily expenses are not so expensive , however , you should consult a Vietnamese friend before buying something and where to buy , finally what you should do is to find a stable job ( i.e teaching English)
I would love Vietnamese friends and thankfully I work remotely so I have a stable job already 😀
would really like to stay in HCM but being Vegan and no Carb diet would make it impossible it would seem. Really enjoyed the park scenes.. :)
You can do it! I showed all of the traditional food places but Saigon is such a western city there are lots of plant based places to eat that also make vegan spins on traditional foods.
Vietnamese are very welcoming. They would invite you to exercise with open arms.
I know I shouldn’t be so shy…
That’s core t we do that too in the Philippines
What do you do in the Philippines?
Not sure why you would want to go to a coffee shop, buy a coffee and sit on the ground for 6 hours - seems inefficient but, it's nice to see you're happy.
It’s not the ground I’m on a bench 😊 and the six hours I was referencing was actually working on my laptop at a shop but you will see lots of Vietnamese at shops with friends for hours which has been a great reminder to me that not every moment in life needs to be efficient.
Come to Cambodia 🇰🇭 next
It won’t be next but I am coming soon. I was there in 2008 to see Angkor Wat so what else should I see.

Well I travel all over the world so it’s pretty easy to spot people who are good and those to avoid. They exist in every country but it’s hard to fake sincerity.
Definitely you should live in Saigon when you get a normal job what is enough life to spend.
I have a normal job, I've been working remotely for 13 years.
At streets with stop lights you still should wait for your direction to be green to cross. It's so frustrating for the motorists when tourists cross a busy street on a "dont walk" and jam up traffic instead of waiting to cross when traffic flows in the direction they are walking. If no stop lights, then feel free to cross thru traffic and just walk at a consistent pace so motorbikes can judge how to go around you easily. No need to be afraid, as they don't want to hit you just as much as you don't want them to hit you 😅
I trust locals on motorbikes but I do not trust cars or other vehicles, it seems like they don't care about anyone!
@@ayngelina yeah the bigger the vehicle the more they think they have the right to expect everyone smaller to get out of their way. Trucks and buses are pretty bad. Cars are usually very cautious because they're used to motorbikes constantly pulling in front of them. And cars are held to high standards by the police. Cars can get issued expensive tickets very easily so they are usually the ones who obey the traffic laws the best
The buses are the worst hands down. In Wednesday's video I show a bus that had just hit a motorcycle and while we were on a motorbike so many buses passed us dangerously and way too fast...

The difference between American and Canadian is how Canadian pronounce “out” and “about”😀
Also I am from the Atlantic Ocean side of Canada, just above Maine and so my accent reflects that as well, my vowels are extended longer - so its like "OAT" and "ABOAT"
I was sold on moving to Saigon (at least for a couple of years) but I saw a video about its air quality. Is it really so bad you'd have to wear a mask? I have allergic rhinitis so it's a huge factor. The air pollution wasn't so bad when I was there about 7 years ago :(
Before you move anywhere you should definitely visit. I didn’t find air pollution to be an issue but if you’re riding on a motorbike in traffic I would wear a mask so you don’t inhale all the exhaust fumes.
@@ayngelina Thank you so much for your response! Will be there in May for an initial 21-30 days and will decide then. Thanks again! :)

If you don't mind me asking why do you keep referring to where you're staying as my Airbnb as opposed to my apartment or where I live I know it's an Airbnb rental but I'm curious from your personal perspective why do you refer to it as an Airbnb? It's your home it's where you live.
It wasn’t a conscious decision but maybe because it was a short term rental vs signing a lease? Also I found her on Airbnb and then booked directly with her.
So you haven’t told Allan that Pho comes in beef yet?
Damn, you are sadistic! 😂
This was Chao which doesn’t come in beef at this stall. She only served two things this rice dish, which is basically congee with pork blood pudding and pork and banh mi
@@ayngelina ok blame it on the restaurant owner! 🤔🙄
Alan has eaten pork at least 5 times without knowing. And especially because we eat on the street people are busy and sometimes forget. He's okay with it as it's not his fault so technically ok.
@@ayngelina he should have been a lawyer. Looking for a loop hole.
You can tell him from me, that I respect and studied Islam very much. The reason I don’t convert is, my love of Pork and the occasional beer.
I’ll tell you two a Story of a friend from Montreal (Syrian Moslem).
He went into a Burger joint saw a burger and ordered it. Discovered it had Bacon on it and removed it. Loved the burger so much, he returned a week later.
This time he ordered the burger with out bacon. He said it just wasn’t the same, something about even the bacon drippings!
So I’ve learned a lot being in Indonesia with everyone I know being Muslim and you could very much convert and still eat pork if you wanted. There is no hard and fast set of rules and everyone can choose to practice their faith as they see right for them. So some Muslims pray five times a day others do not, some women wear a hijab others don’t (which actually isn’t a rule anywhere to cover your hair) , some drink alcohol etc but the goal is to strive to be better.
I think it’s similar to my Jewish friends who practice in different ways and I’m a lapsed Catholic so don’t get me started on who people are supposed to behave there.
so I guess you are telling the world just sit your ass at your department and :) go around from first floor until the top and enjoy the whole days :).
In western country you should driver 30 minutes or even an hours just for breakfast.
In Vietnam getting delicious food is too easy, even when I don't know what food is being served I just point to a name and ask for that, because I know whatever they serve will be good!
@@ayngelina yup that's the only thing good about the country.
