Culloden - Only The Innocent Suffer

  • The Battle of Culloden, 16th April 1746
To tell the tale of Culloden is extremely important and for me a huge pressure to not let the men down who were there. I'm not saying that I know everything about the politics of the battle and nobody ever will, but when I research history I can only put myself in my ancestors shoes. These men who gave their lives were innocent men and boys whose lives were meaningless to the powers that be and those that survived would never live in peace again. I also never mentioned the brutality of the aftermath of Culloden but I guess that all deserves a video of its own.
I hope to see many of you at the memorial next year!

You have quite the talent for story telling I enjoyed it 😀 I can only image what that man must have felt seeing his son across the battlefield.

Thanks for sharing the history of the battle. My ancestors fought at Culloden. One was the Laird of Drum, who after the battle escaped and hid in a secret room in Drum castle. He made it to France where he spent years in exile, until he was allowed to return to his lands.

    Brilliant
I’ve been there in the 80s but to be honest I didn’t get the full story .
Your portrayal of what happened is down to earth and easy to understand .
Thanks you’ve done a great job

Well told, the passion really comes across. Many seem to have forgotten the true tale of Culloden and the aftermath. To this day some Army Regiments will not allow tartan in the messes.

Following Culloden, British army Highland regiments were allowed to continue wearing the Highland dress. Yet more proof that the Dress Act is not evidence of cultural genocide or whatever propagandists call it.

Very informative, thanks. There will be a lot of people who have never heard of Culloden , especially south of the border and many who do know, like me, probably don’t know the politics behind it.
It was a tragedy, they didn’t stand a chance against rifle and cannon. They were like lambs led to slaughter but they were warriors each and everyone.

Our ancestral lines and way of life were destroyed and broken 💔 but will still be remembered and live on in the few that care to remember. Lest we forget the ones who fought for freedom and for our future.

Yeah, Bonnie Prince Charlie was a prick… a wee effeminate Italian! Who has been falsely romanticised.
Unfortunately, the battle was a forgone conclusion even before it started and it must’ve been a truly horrific sight to behold.
We, as Scots, should never forget the impact the aftermath of Culloden had on our country and NEVER, EVER forget the brave men and boys who lost their lives that day!
Thank you so much for making this, Arran! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙

@@ArranOfAlba The Jacobites must be remembered, but not in a good way. They murdered and pillaged to put a Catholic autocrat on the throne of an overwhelmingly Protestant kingdom.

The story and the images were so moving. I am speechless. And I felt that the video was too short... I wanted to listen more about it. Your people is so admirable. Thas why when i went to Alba, every step there was like... uffff what happened around these lands, too much history, too much bravery, but also, too much loss, but for a cause, a hope, a future...

So heart wrenchingly moving epic history told, Arran. The Outlander story follows the Fraisers. I read many a historical romances of the highlander clans when I was younger.
In 1740, my ancestors, 7 brothers Braun were granted a King James Grant of lands in Wapakoneta, Ohio from Boden Boden Germany. They fought Native American Indians for the Territorial Treaties that stole the land from them basically. Pioneers, farmers who were untrusting of, having no loyalties to George Washington.

This is a tired old myth. The dismantlement of the clan system and its way of life was caused by the Agricultural Revolution, when clan chiefs ruthlessly evicted their own tenants to make room for large-scale sheep farming. The British government’s temporary ban of the Highland dress was a measure to stamp out Jacobitism, while the disarming act was absolutely necessary to ensure the constant bloodshed in the Highlands was brought to an end.

I wouldn’t call the Jacobite clansmen innocent…. they mercilessly slaughtered retreating and surrendering government soldiers at multiple battles, like at Prestonpans in 1745. They caused a huge amount of unrest and strife in their unjust attempt to put a Catholic on the throne of an overwhelmingly Protestant kingdom. Of course, the women and children who suffered because of the reprisals were innocent. However, in the 18th century, brutality was common.
