God bless you two. The first few times docking and undocking are incredibly stressful. This is true for any new captains, no mater what their pride says. I remember going through all the emotions you guys expressed in this video. And when you guys finally got underway and said “We did awesome, we didn’t hit anything!” I just smiled so hard and cheered for you. To have all those fears and stress start to ease away and know that you got this and all that hard work was worth it, is such an accomplishment. Part of the fun of a sailboat is the adventure and the unknown. One day you will feel that the things you fear now just feel mundane, and you will have all new fears and discover new problems to handle. Congratulations and all the best wishes to you.

When backing up a boat like yours, use short, high rpm, blast then let the boat drift then through it again the prop walk will be your friend once you learn how to use it. If going wrong direction, you short blast going forward to put the bar where you want it, it takes high RPMs that Full Keel does not like to turn, especially when there is a current

Hello guys, very good, the undocking maneuver was good, there were more fears and nervousness that prevented you from doing it correctly, but that doesn't matter, you did it, a piece of advice: Whenever you undock you should pay attention to whether or not there is wind and what it is. your speed, observe the tide, if it is going down orgrowing or if you are unemployed, remember that there is always a slight current. You must maneuver in small spaces and with very little machine, do not put the rod on either side because then you change the stern fall very quickly. WE ALL BEEN THROUGH THIS, when you go to Portland you will be more trained. When you go under the bridges you must go through the very center of the channel and be attentive to the current, if there is ebb it will push you out, but if it is full it will be difficult for you to give a couple of RPM to the engine, if you are in the center of the channel will save you from an unexpected emergency, then theThe same current and rush will get you out of trouble. Train yourself over time App Windy App Ventusky. I wish you good luck and blessings... Mexico and Baja California will be waiting for you...

First off congratulations on dropping the lines! That is a HUGE accomplishment & you should be proud of it!
Now, I think you were experiencing prop walk - the tendency of propellors to pull the boat to one side when in reverse (a similar phenomena happens when in forward, but because of the flow of water over the keel, most pilots are only subtlety aware of it). I know you had transmission issues, so obviously that was a huge factor. But.....
An old salt once told me "if you are not bored when docking, then you are going too fast." And he didn't just mean boat speed. You guys are doing fine - relax & give yourselves a break. The next time you back out of a slip it will go better, & then the time after that will be even more smooth (and so on, and so on....) Docking is the most stressful thing in boating, so pat yourselves on the back for not actually hitting anything. They don't make T-shirts that say "sorry for what I said while docking the boat" for no reason . You just need to give yourself permission to (a) relax and (b) just go a little bit slower - you'll still get there when you were meant to.

By the way she handled I am assuming a long keel with a rudder attached to the keel, the prop is in a cavity in the rudder. Going astern will always be on her terms. When windy she will try to weathercock so the bow tries to point downwind. The full keel will respond to the tide which is the strongest force hence you went sideways down tide. Two terms you will hear are propwash and prop walk. Together they will help to use the inertia of the boat. I.e. with the boat stopped put helm in the direction you want, give a good short burst ahead, you will see the prop wash deflected by the rudder pushing the stern round. Before you get moving too fast give a sharp blast in astern this uses prop walk to push the stern round. The tiller is useless if you are not moving astern. Looking at the flow of water when you power astern, it is trying to push the stern to starboard, hence it was adding to the effect of the tide on the keel, you go sideways. Find an open area to play, using only short bursts of power you should be able to turn in your own length, probably easier to starboard. Final point in this long comment is to consider the use of long ropes for manoeuvring, a process known as warping.

What a lovely yacht... She's a tank... I'd say every fresh captain has done what you did, so don't think you are any worse than any of us (cough) experts... we all started with our first boats too... and buggered it up just like you... Welcome to the club... You will figure it out... What works for you and your particular type of keel arrangement, and your style... Good luck... Avoid close quarters for the first few weeks of the journey and you will be fine... Just practice in the middle of the river to figure out what your boat likes to do...

I am a delivery Captain. Your boat will never back up straight. 😆 It requires short burst in forward, then reverse. Keep tiller in same position the boat will turn in its own radius. You have to practice somewhere where you won't hit something. Figure out which way your prop walk takes you. On my full keel boat, my stern will go port. But i gun the throttle in reverse with rudder straight, then in neutral, and turn the rudder to get momentum and boat turns.

The big "sigh" before leaving....I get it lol and leaving the dock.....I have short arms and legs.....Our stress level was about the same and let's not talk about the lock we had to go through. I had NO experience and he had limited but we made it! I love ya'lls energy!! Safe travels!

Locks were actually pretty easy in hindsight lol but my short arms and no experience was definitely a hindrance...just remember not to take anything yall say to each other personal while doing new, hard things with a high stress level...also, I am looking into head sets so we don't have to scream at each other @@sailingnehan

Look up Back and Fill there are some great videos of the technique that also explain what your prop and rudder are doing
Also don’t go faster than you are prepared to hit something.
If you are not making way and you drift into a dock/piling/boat there will be minimal if any damage.
So keep calm ( which you pretty much did ) and only as much speed as you need

I have a Southern Cross 31 almost the same hull and weight. Tiller and transom rudder. Like your solar set up, where did you purchase them. Great channel!! Subscribed and enjoy your channel!! Best of luck and someday hope to see you on the water. ❤

Thank you, glad you enjoy the channel. We literally started doing it just for our family and friends. Southern cross is a beautiful boat aswell. Honestly we purchased 90 percent of everything from Amazon, that's where we got everything for our solar system I believe. We might of got the wind/solar control from a different site, but everything else definitely came from Amazon. Hope to see you on a sandy beach somewhere
