Thanks mate. There has been so much rain over the last month so everything is green and verdant. This time last year the land was brown and burnt or burning. This is how the weather is in Australia, extremely variable.

This morning we bought a product called Eco-oil, a concentrate that will dilute to fifty litres. Its active constiuant is Emulsiful botanical oils.
We looked at a container of Diazinon. Wow that is serious stuff, very dangerous. Thanks for heads up Tim.
It seems like many of the trees are powering through the infestation with new growth. The warm & wet weather is encouraging many trees to go for it.

It started raining this afternoon, heavily. Rain is forecast for the next week so we will not be able to spray the trees.

Close inspection of the dead tree shows what looks to be a cut to the stem, below the graft. If it is a cut it would have been caused by me cutting grass from around the trees with a brush cutter. So it would be my fault. I believe a young tree can die if hit by fast moving steel.
We cut back the dead growth. There is some growth at the base so we will try to coax new root stock to grow & then try to graft to it.
I have an attachment to my brush cutter that will dig out grass & weeds. There are four blades underneath the spinning head that dig. So I will use this head to cut around trees in the future.

Why not just use a herbicide to kill the grass/weeds ? It won’t grow back and saves yourself a heap of work

I am not keen on herbicides. I am thinking about about it but do prefer cutting grass back so the dead vegetation rots down into the soil. I will see how it goes as we plant more trees and I have limited time off from work it may not be possible to keep cutting grass around the trees.

Do not use roundup it’s not safe for young trees.
Haloxyfop (40ml/100litres) mix with BASTA (50ml/10L) and ammonia sulphate (1kg/100L) mix in a 15 litre backpack spray with protech oil and red indicator dye. Safe for young macadamia trees and smashes the weeds and grasses quickly. It’s not roundup (glyphosate) but works very much the same.
Cutting the grass back is a waste of time as it will just grow back time and time again creating more work for you.

@@mattmacadamia1336 thanks for the information Matt. Appreciate it. It seems Basta is the preferred herbicide for macadamia farming.

    Yes it’s leaf miner.

Thanks TIm, we will try to pick up Diazinon tomorrow and start spraying the trees.

Gardening and Macadamia farming there’s probably a safer and more effective chemical, talk to someone in the know about it.

Thanks Tim, we will go to Norco today & ask them. I read an information sheet put out by the NSW dept of Ag on citrus leaf miner. It recommends using oil based products to control the moth & larvae. I guess it is similar for macadamia leaves. We will see if Norco sells stuff like this.

Gardening and Macadamia farming oils don’t work well at all for macadamia leaf miner as they do for citrus.

@@timhills5695 is it that big a problem anyway? I know it looks dramatic, but I’ve never heard of it being fatal. I use eco oil for mites on my roses and I like the product, but it’s no cure-all.

Based on the information we have we will spray the trees with Diazinon next week. The website for it advises it will kill the insects causing this damage.
