If the tree moves backwards and forwards in the wind it will snap the roots growing out horizontally, when the dry comes it will effect the tree as I have found out.
    Compost and Pruning is essential!

Thanks Matt. This February we will be back at the farm for two weeks. All trees that are over hip high that have not branched will be pruned. We will also continue to mulch the trees with woodchip.
However we are running out of woodchip. We bought five truck loads of it last year and have almost distributed it all. On the other hand the grass is growing tall again, close or over two meters tall between the rows. So cut grass will be used to mulch the trees too, as long as my lawn mower is working.

Cut the single large trees off between knee and hip height. The lower the better. They will reshoot and form a nice shape. If not the wind will do it for you as you have seen or worse bowl the tree over....

Thanks Matt wasn’t aware of that

A year after these trees were planted we removed the tape and stakes from most of them. Maybe three trees still need support. The trees that were knocked over by the wind are now upright and do not require support. They all made it. Pruning the trees helps them a lot and makes the trees more stable and stronger. Composting the trees with a ring of mulch helps too. The mulch breaks down and enriches the area around the tree.
Of the trees planted in 2020, two were knocked over and killed by me and my mower, one completely died and one died above the graft. I'm keeping this root stock going and will try to graft to it in a year or so of time.
We planted 300 new trees in May 2021. Only a few needed support. The trees were stockier and smaller. It has been windy again. I try to put an update video up next time we are up there.

Should have pruned them at planting so they weren’t top heavy.

Yes probably they should have been pruned. One tree was pruned by accident when planting and it’s doing fine. It was very windy over winter this year, much more than normal. The upside is there were no frosts.
It would be best to stake up each tree but we decided, based on the trial planting of 2019, it was not needed. We did not count on the 2020 being windier than 2019. Oh well overall the weather has been much better in 2020 & not too many trees were bashed down by the wind.

That green tape is crap. Wouldn’t last a week so are the bamboo stakes.
      Norco sell
Whites 50mm x 33m Jute Webbing Plant Tie
And 25x25mm square tomato stakes which you can cut in half on an angle

Hi Matt, I'll check out the webbing and stakes next time we are at Norco.
We have been using this tape and bamboo since May 2019. The trees we staked up as they were top heavy no longer need support. The tape generally had failed by the beginning of 2020. By then the trees were stronger and standing upright.
With these trees that were knocked over by the strong winter westerly winds of 2020, they were pushed upright and staked in September 2020 as recorded in this video. In December of 2020, we removed the tape and bamboo from most of them. They are now standing upright by themselves.
So this staking is a temporary fix for those trees that need it.
So far we have had two trees die from the plantings of May and September 2020. One was recorded in another video, I think I nicked it with a brushed cutter blade and that caused it to die. The other I ran over with my lawn mower when I lost control due to a burst hydraulic hose.
I'm pretty annoyed and upset over these losses, especially because I'm the cause. So I'll try to be more careful with the trees.

Hardwood tomato stake! 2 per tree

Jim Elder a FB maca grower friend was staking newly planted trees like this. He has given up doing it. It takes too much time and effort & costs too much when dealing with hundreds & thousands of trees.
We will not worry about it either & just accept there will be damaged trees that need help or replacement.

That logic Is insane, rather than protect your investment just replace trees time and time again. The damage is unacceptable.

Hi Tim, all of the trees in this video which was filmed in September, were doing fine in December 2020. None have died and they are all standing upright, most of them without support which we removed.
It is difficult for us to protect them because we live a long way away from the orchard and have limited time to work in it. So I think losses are inevitable.
For example after all of this rain some of the level land at the bottom is waterlogged. This is despite a gully at the bottom. The water is trapped before it gets to the gully. Some of the trees there are sitting in water. If the rain does not let up its probable some will die.
I can't do anything about it as I'm not there. When I get up there next I'll dig a few trenches and put in some ag drain so this area is drained. I did not foresee this issue just as I did not foresee the fierce westerly winter winds. They were pretty well non stop all winter.

    Is it wet?

    • @kdegraa
      @kdegraa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Jim Elder yeah it is wet. The rain is very welcomed along with cool weather it brings. The orchard is very well drained with a gully at the bottom so there is no fear of the trees getting wet feet from being waterlogged.
However the rain encourages grass to grow. It’s getting pretty high so I’ll have to cut it before it gets over head high.
