In my mind, I am 5 years old, kneeling on the front bench seat of a cadillac convertible, which is headed downtown in my small town, with my brother and sister in the backseat with me, while my babysitter's daughter is driving, with a cigarette with an impossibly long piece of ash hanging off of it, and cranks the radio because Petula Clark's downtown just came on. I can see, feel and hear it, as if I am there right now. One of the truly great pop songs.

My goodness this is a blast from the past. It was the number one hit in 1964. I was only a10 year old boy then. Today I am a 67-year-old senior citizen enjoying your channel, and the great music you react to.
1964 was a crucial year in America. It was the year the Beatles first came to America. Everyone was glued to their television sets watching them perform live on "The Ed Sullivan Show." It marked the year of the British invasion with Petula Clarke being just one of them. And music and style will never be the same again. Great reaction as always.

Petula Clark is a British legend! She was a child star in movies in WW2, and managed to stay to stay popular ever since. Her heyday was the 60s (like this classic song and the other great Tony Hatch songs she performed, like the amazing "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love"), but she became a star across Europe for decades by also singing fluently in German, French, Italian and Spanish...
As I write this it's her 89th birthday *today* (happy birthday!) and she's still performing! Here's a link to a more recent track, "Cut Copy Me", with a more modern sound, but it suits her really well!

Glad to see you enjoy Downtown. I just listened to it again 2 days ago. I have worn out the song over the years. In my opinion Petula Clark has the greatest voice I have ever heard. Billboard Magazine left her off their Top 100 singers of all time. Can you believe it. She should have been number 1. I have bough everything she has done in english. Some french recordings. She has made albums in her 80's. She is 89 this year. Recorded Downtown when she was 30.

@stevekeithley : Hello Steve from a fellow lifelong fan of the legendary Petula Clark.
When your already and always will be THE Greatest Female Vocalist Of ALL TIME who needs any recognition from people who presumably don't know great music and should not have the jobs that they occupy.
Petula Clark is not in,and never will be in,anyone else's shadow it is they that are in Petula's shadow.
I have have never heard anyone who comes anywhere close to being as PHENOMENAL as Petula Clark is.
Petula is a Multi-Talented icon who is not only a superlative singer but equally as magnificent as a Musical Theatre Actress, Film Actress and well renowned songwriter.
Petula Clark is THE BEST of the best.

    • @teehymes

What a coincidence, Richard. This was almost exactly my same age and experience. I grew up on the army base there in San Antonio, and this too is the first song I at age 5 ever remember hearing on the radio one summer day outside a “five and dime” store.
Its hopeful yearning for discovery and connection - carried by her sweet bright voice - grabbed right into me and has left a lasting mark ever since.
As a sort of bookend, I recently heard her “Kiss Me Goodbye” for the first time and find it a magnificent heartbreaking ballad with mature richness.

Tony Hatch wrote this with the idea of getting sales of Pye and Petual Clark discs into the USA. While London does not have a Downtown Area (well its the West End), this was so much of the lights- even if on the telly they were black and white !!) of the London I knew - The Hippodrome was a great dance hall (now a Casino), and Piccadilly Circus had the flashing lights of the billboards (now much reduced as the Trocodero Building is back with its exposed stonework again, but Shaftsbury Avenue still has the lights of the theatres doing musicals and plays, leading up to the jazz clubs and over to the cinemas. I did my annual Christmas Trip and the crowds were pretty thick even on a cold november sunday , with the Regent Street Lights in place. I decided to walk up to Warren Street for the tube and found a few back streets (the north side of the Post Office Tower) that I had never been around before, and an Anglo-Catholic Church I was not aware of, but I could not stay as my trip over to the other part of London that rarely sleeps - Green Lanes in Harringey- was needed to drop off some records to a buyer. Task done and back on the tube under the Thames and back to South London where work and family keep me ( a stones throw from part of the building that used to be Pye Record's pressing plant).

Great Reaction to a time when London in 1965 was the EpiCentre of The World for Music, Theatre,Arts, Fashion and Photography and Downtown could mean any Downtown part of any major Town but the English Singer and English writer: Tony Hatch, who both still alive, were referring to The West End of London which is as famous, Worldwide,as Broadway.

She's probably singing about downtown in a big city. I grew up in Scranton, PA and even though small, the downtown area was a magical place in the 60's. Going downtown was a big deal. People used to dress up to go shopping - dresses, hats and gloves!. Two major department stores anchored the downtown area - the Globe Store and the Scranton Dry Goods. They had huge windows that were always filled with wonderful displays, especially at Christmas. Some of the older buildings were gorgeous examples of Victorian Gothic architecture. You just really felt like you were a part of something special. When the malls sprang up, the downtown area died. It's trying to come back now and I hope it does. I was 10 when this song came out and it always made me want to go visit our downtown. Thanks for the memories!!!!!

Not sure how much youngsters can understand of the times then, and the thoughts and memories this song brings back of the times.
This was back when TV was black and white, when most cities and towns were drab shades of gray from pollution, when people dressed alike in drab colours, when there weren't the radio stations playing teen's 'pop' music - and downtown was full of bright neon lighting, where people ould dress up in their best 'saturday night' finery, where the clubs were full of live bands, where you met your friends to go to the movies because that was the only place you could watch them, and people were bustling about having fun.

So glad yo uare discovering some of the great female singers of the sixties. Other greats to check out are Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black (who was great friends with the Beatles when they first started). Also an Australian band called the Seekers awho came to London and became huge and whos lead singer has the most amazing voice. her name is Judith Durham.
