Branding! It’s like marketing, and logos, and stuff, but I guess it has more colors or something.
From Coca Cola, to apple, to something else I forgot, every major corporation is obsessed with its image.
Because its image matters.
And today I want to talk about that for some reason.

Hello everyone, good viewing🐼
I remember in my high school art class that if you had a black background & random lines or spots of every color on the color wheel spread out on it, our eyes typically are drawn to yellow 1st then red 2nd. This is why most fast food places use either yellow & red or orange as their logos since it draws the eyes of people in quickly when they're driving.

The tropicana change made it look like orange flavored wine, like box wine, and that sounds wildly gross.
I am sure some wine moms would love that. They be able to say they are drinking orange juice. Be like the on from Hey Arnold. Her "smoothies."

The pringles redesign was probably one of the worst in recent memory. The problem with going minimalist is that it ends up looking like every other minimalist design on the shelf.
That was also the issue with going maximalist 20-30 years ago, it's cyclical.
They did something to their recipe around the same time as well. I tried a can of pringles recently and it does NOT taste like it used to.
I hated how they updated the face on the can to have a "modern emoji-style look," when it was originally meant to have the exact opposite effect - a nostalgic image of good, old-fashioned quality.
Yeah I don't buy their "we spent years researching the market to make this logo", it literally looks like the original file corrupted and lost a few layers.
I remember in my high school art class that if you had a black background & random lines or spots of every color on the color wheel spread out on it, our eyes typically are drawn to yellow 1st then red 2nd. Also famously why the Simpsons were created with yellow skin. If you’re flipping through the channels, that splash of yellow will pop out at you and draw your attention.
And that's why they are better than Family Guy. Lol
I also heard somewhere that's why taxis are typically yellow.
Red also means “fast” and yellow usually means “cheap”

man, i can't see how renaming your company to "THE SHACK" could ever go wrong
Near where I live there are multiple "The Shack" restaurants. It's a small chain.
I fuckin' miss old school Radio Shack. They had the best gadgets, tools, toys...
I didn't realize they even existed as of "a few years ago", I haven't lived in the same state as a physical radio shack for most of a decade.
I guess it's working for Shake Shack as that's literally the only shop I can name that specializes in selling shakes and not xyz + shakes.
But yeah, calling your business, that sells tech products mind you, "a shitty building usually used for storing gardening equipment" is a pretty bold (re -- dumb) move.
Purple and black is an underrated combo, but it has “spooky” connotations….
Purple black and green will always be my favorite color combo.

I’m a graphic design student and everyone in my corporate identity class was aghast at the Tropicana rebranding. All of us knew it was bound to fail. Same thing with the Sierra Mist rebranding. There are tons of designers who hate the current trends, it’s just that we’re bound to make whatever our clients want from us, and this is what the corpo conglomerates want right now.
I heard the Sierra mist one was because they forgot to renew the trade mark and were forced to changed because it was cheaper than paying to get it back
my first thought: "changing your name again?"

Tyler's Fun Bucket will be real
I think the minimalist design for known brands doesn’t work because a lot of generic store brands tend to have that style already (and did in 2009). Streamlined/clean = cheap/value, which I would suspect is what these brands have actively tried for and when a bigger brand tries to do that, they’re just going to get lost in the shuffle, because their price isn’t going to imply additional value in that context, just that it’s more expensive.
Personally I think half the reason they try and go minimalist is to save on printing costs
@@Omnywrench oh that’s probably a factor too, for sure. Lot of synergy in these decisions.
@@Omnywrench Screen real estate on small screens like those of smartphones started it. You redesign your logo to be legible at 48x48px by cutting it down to one colour and a single sans-serif letter and then suddenly everything else in your design language doesn't fit with it. Just another thing smartphones ruined.
I think it's because millenial graphic designers all watched Idiocracy and went "Mike Judge is right, maximalism truly is for dumb hick macho bullies. Let's be the opposite of Brawndo." And then they kept selling us Brawndo, but with a nerdy vegan softboy image slapped on top. Because that's what they are.
And then zoomer graphic designers came along and did the exact opposite of that by selling girly products with edgelord gamer bro designs.
i always associated the green from the original xbox with aliens lol, like the tech was out of this world
Honeslty thats most likely what they wanted considering the weird controler and console design and stuff like sounds from the moon landing in the menus
The OG Xbox's aesthetic definitely evoked some kind of UFO technology. I kinda miss that. Modern Xbox is very bland, Microsoft-style corporate.
Peoples eyes naturally like imagery that stands out. And with the modern flat minimal corporate design, you don't have that. It becomes boring, and doesn't tell you much, other than the obvious parts. And if a generic brand offers better visual appeal, they may end up getting the money instead. You don't sell many apples by stuffing them all in a blank solid red box with the word "apples" on it in segoe font.
I noticed Pepsi and Fanta changed their logos last year to be less minimalistic. Pepsi's new logo looks closer to its 1970s logo and the new Fanta logo looks like its about to jump off of the packaging. I personally dislike the minimalism trend of the 2010s, so seeing some companies move back to bold logo design is refreshing.
I remember as a kid being so confused why the Disney logo, didn’t have a d in it. Now as an adult, I don’t think about the d in the Disney logo because it’s too iconic to really, “read.”

Funny that you mention Nintendo's association with red: although it was indeed very present in Occident, in Japan you wouldn't find any red Nintendo logo on any boxart. Even the in-game logos were white or blue before being recolored to red on export. Then they ditched the red in all regions for more than ten years, until the release of the Switch when they went for a red background instead of the red foreground. I only found out about this very recently and I was really surpised: like you, I kind of associated the red-on-white Nintendo logo with the Japanese flag.
Upon reflection, Nintendo did indeed have a white logo, like Super Mario World, white logo on a black background. First thing. A Link to the Past as well.

Fun fact, Taco Bell's modern teal-and-purple branding is largely because the head of marketing in the early Aughts was a fan of Demolition Man, where they claim that in the not too distant future Taco Bell would win the Franchise Wars (actual armed conflict!) and that all restaurants from there on would be Taco Bell.

9:40 hilarious regional side effect of this, in Quebec, language laws are a thing, and names like Kentucky Fried Chicken needed to be in French.
PFK, pae ef kaw
Poulet Frit Kentucky
Nothing in the current law (that may change) prevents them from using KFC. They moved in Qc in the 60s (or even before) well before language laws and they just decided to translate their name on their own for marketing purposes.
I hated the Pepsi rebrand from 2008 - 2023! It used to be sort of a yin / yang equal proportioned logo, but they ruined that! Luckily they finally fixed it this year. I can finally enjoy Pepsi again!
The new logo feels more casual
Orange juice container without an orange on it will 100% confuse my brain in the split second decision making moment at the grocery store into phasing it totally out of my potential selections lol
It could be in an aisle of nothing but orange juice and I just know there would be times people think it was put there by mistake
Branding urban legends could be a fun video topic. Like, I swear I remember people attributing the KFC rebrand to the idea that they couldn't legally call their product "chicken" in certain markets. I assume that's untrue, but I bet there are similar stories that could be entertaining to debunk (or verify).
I heard it was something to do with the state of Kentucky owning the name and them not being able to use it, idk why I believed it for so long when Texas Roadhouse still has Texas in the name
Just a weird urban legend that went around at the time. I’m from Kentucky, can confirm it’s still chicken, just not especially good lol. Raising canes is better
Ah yes. The incredibly timely and topical RadioShack.
I never knew Dunkin' Donuts changed their name. I walk by one every time I go into town. Maybe it's because I walk by it and never go in.
Me too. Maybe because there are still a lot of colorful “DD” signs around despite second “D” being meaningless.
I don't know why but I find this thinking terrifying. I have been trained since birth to avidly avoid branding and make my purchases entirely on price and quality. I take genuine enjoyment in trying a new store branded item to see if it is edible or just trash a drunk mom is feeding to her neglected children.
When it comes to unnecessary and unsuccessful rebrands, I have a feeling that the Twitter-to-X change will provide design classes with a fascinating case study for years to come.
I'd love to see companies for full-on minimalist. Like, take that orange juice box and just make the whole thing orange with a little "orange juice" written down the in the corner. No buzz words, no BS, just "it is what it is". Like an OEM version of juice.
My man actually sounded pretty stoked about Blinkist. Usually, ads are done in a monotone, sometimes ironic kinda way but this one he just seemed actually excited. Cool!
1:10 thats actually interesting in the EU there is a distintction between true 100 juice and juice made out of juice concentrate as they have to be labeled differently and they taste different due to the percantage of the juice inside the drink.
I'm studying branding for my masters thesis, and I can say that there's a lot of interesting things that go on in your memory to make it work this way. Most of branding works at a subconscious level, based on your past experiences with the brand/it's advertising.
i would love it if you talked more about branding, i think your style of video meshes well with the topic and it seems to me like you have a lot to say about it

I always remember the orange on the Tropicana carton because when I was a little kid I tried to stick a straw into an orange and drink it cuz of the box. If only life were that easy.
It's interesting how colour associations can vary from country to country. My brother found that out the hard way when he bought mugi tea expecting peach iced tea because of the packaging. I had to explain to him that pink is peach in Japan

Seeing how things are nowadays, i feel so lucky I was born in '89. Back then I never could have guessed things would have changed the ways they have. It was such a great time to be a kid. The world seemed to have so many creative outlets & forms of expression. Ways that kids, teens and adults could enjoy themselves. Places to go, things to do, unique style and design, Entertaining movies with practical effects. Animated movies/shows, video games galore. If they used CGI it was used intelligently. I really miss the Vibe of that Era where it treated all of us as if we had intelligence, while also keeping our inner kid in us alive. It felt like everything acknowledged how important YOU were as a fan, customer, person because without us they would be nothing. The creativity that came from that era really put effort into that creativity, not this bland minimalism. I really hope we find a way to reconnect with it because the world seems like it really needs it right now. Look how batshit crazy so much has become nowadays? Video games can't even be video games anymore! Also look at the horrible aesthetics & poor quality & creative design in modern shows, movies, & games now. Things have become so bland, bleek, and minimalistic to the point that it doesn't even make since. Most Old house's/building's/uúnique shop's are gone. Interesting oddities like drive in movies, indoor fun zones, arcade's, magazines that came with a demo disc to try out game's, blockbuster/Hollywood video, McDonald's had N64's, you could preview music before buying it, they had great kid's toy's, Roller Rink's, Garbage pale kid's card's. You get the point. Bring back Retro-Futurism or Y2K Vibes. ANYTHING compared to this current Dystopian toxic positivity, virtue signaling, young people thinking they are the first people to speak up about injustices, advocacy movements? Yet our society feels more divided than it ever did. Society is solely focused on out of control capitalistic agendas. That anything that isn't constantly increasing profits is a failure and has no value to society? Our Quality of Life should be better than this. Basic living shouldn't be this unaffordable. People should be able to have fun playing a game without it having to virtue signal for something. The list goes on. Bring me back to the 90's.
I wish Tropicana had kept the cap from the redesign. The rounded cap with the leaves is actually adorable and a great design choice. If they had just added that I wouldn't be surprised if more people bought it just from that. I know I might have
Honestly, I've become so jaded by the "Tropicana Sparkling" commercial from Japan, I can't see Tropicana without hearing that girl singing/dancing "doo doo du doo Tropicana!"
If it works, it works. If it doesn't there's theories. That's branding.
The cap on the redesign of tropicana was really cool though
I want more of this, just you talking about brand logos
That “The Shack” thing baffled me. At the time I thought they’d just go with Tandy (Store) just like they had done in other countries. Oh well.
I kinda dig that orange cap for the Tropicana bottle tho. That was cool.
I like how as soon as you mentioned color theory the 2 colors you declared as not looking good are the tropicana colors... and maybe it's because you talked about them in the earlier video, but when I saw those colors, I thought they looked just fine together, and still do lol.

Ah branding updates. The tireless drive to draw in more customers driving companies to do away with the old and trot out the new. Always taking it as a given that existing customers will continue to come back for more. When branding updates work, its either because the old branding was bad enough to be an active detriment to the product (Twix), or because high profile public backlash to the change tends to remind lapsed customers that the product exists (Dunkin').
One detail I like with the new tropicans design are the little green leaves printed next to the orange cap

I'll give them this: The Tropicana redesign does have a neat detail where there's a leaf stem near the orange cap.

I love the color theme with the original Xbox. Nothing more early 2000’s than black and green.
I need to use the color theory to choose the color of my own brand logo wisely and carefully. I also need to make it simple, but too simple.

I honestly feel like I won't even bother going to "Dunkin'" anymore because the dropping of "Doughnuts" from their name makes me think they no longer sell doughnuts.
Just my 2 cents on that matter.
9:34 It also helps that most locals call 'em "Dunk's" to begin with, so it's not quite as jarring of a change

Where can you still get the Tropicana in a Carton? I've only seen it sold in the plastic bottle for almost a decade now
Panera was originally a st louis only chain named “St Louis BreadCO”
Big hullabaloo in stl when all of the old “St louis Bread Co.” signs were taken down and replaced with Panera signs for “brand cohesion”
gives a whole new meaning to "Silence, Brand."
Same with a couple swiss energy network operators. That rebranding wave hit Switzerland a couple years back (we are a bit behind in such things, ya know, mountains n such).... and you dont recognize it anymore that its axpo because you are so acustomed to the red logo with an X that this rainbow thing now just gets blanked out in your mind.
Time and time again, im surprised that all those highly pay'd "marketing experts" fail hard every time, yet still get a chunkload of cash... while a regular engineer would be fired after such a incident.
A year or two I made up a logo for a fake cigarette company I named Condor, in the shape of a bird in flight with an aggressive
logo. Liquid Death can get away with it, so can I.
I'm in Canada and or Tropicana's come in plastic containers and honestly look much better despite having basically the same image... Maybe it's because it's see through and you can see the OJ behind it?
I'm of the opinion that Tropicana's packaging didn't work because at a first glance you wouldn't be able to recognize it anymore from the original, so you think it's an entirely different brand. Also, logos that are turned 90 degrees so they have to be read by tilting your head... not helping.
i love ur videos man
Near where I used to live, a KFC still uses the old branding from the 80's/90's. Reason being it's so popular the community would have a fit if the shop closed for a month to be updated.
RadioShack could've renamed itself Jim's Meth and Crack Whorehouse and that wouldn't get people to notice that RadioShack exists in 2018
It’s ironic that a company called _RadioShack_ outlived _FutureShop._
This is good content. I am commenting on good content so that TH-cam and its advertisers are aware that this content is good.

Question: Why is *beige* so often the color of nature and rustic-ism? I don't encounter a lot of *beige* in my life, yet when I do, it's often in the form of some naturalistic/organic product marketing.
You know, speaking of branding, I never liked the Xbox 360 aesthetics on their packaging: Always reminded me of something boring like a vitamin supplement.
Reminds me of one famous Chinese coconut water brand, it is one of the most eyesore design ever but because it was such a bad design that has been so memorable and the item is very popular. If you ever curious about it, you can visit any local Chinese supermarket and you should be able to find it.

Comment to boost this well made video in the algorithm. Also with a few tweaks that nee Tropicana packaging could be awesome.
You made an interesting point as brands like Apple and Dunkin' change their logo to be more minimalist, they make a conscious effort to strip it down to a mere symbol. As companies grow large there is a demand to make their brand mean less. This is akin to the structuralist idea that symbols are only supposed to have meaning in relation to other symbols (i.e. other brands). This also feels dystopian in a way that capitalism would ultimately morph businesses with a "personal" identity into a soulless blob of capital, losing its human element. (There are obviously exceptions like KFC that does the opposite, which retains the old man in the logo to mimic the identity it may or may not once had.)
Are you ever going to release more of your songs on spotify?
