“Blinded by the Light” was Springsteen’s first song on his first album, “Greetings from Asbury Park”. He said years later that the song makes no sense. He wrote it on bus and said he just started writing lines that rhymed in a sort of stream of consciousness form.
I too, after all these decades, never knew Springsteen wrote this. Singing along I kept falling over the words as many are different than the Manfred Mann version I grew up with.
Similar to Because the Night, sang by Patti Smith all those years ago. The first time I saw it, with some mates, we thought it was a great song. However, none of us knew that Springsteen wrote it. He really is a musical genius.
Me too exactly. Here I am in 2024 and 75 years old and I just now understood the lyrics.
I consider myself a musicologist.... But..... I had no idea Springsteen wrote this song. Always something else something new to learn I guess.
I feel the same way. Sometimes it's the serendipity of it all though. When you realize this and it sends you down roads you never would have taken. Pride is when you assume you're at your final destination, but humility proves it to be a pitstop!

I think this kind of music (these kind of lyrics) is best suited for solo guitar like this. If the lyrics are more complex than it's easier to listen to and understand if the melody is simpler.

An all-time great lyric. I was maybe five or six years old when I first heard it and I was just fascinated by the imagery. I'm not even a real Springsteen fan, but those early albums had some killer lyrics.

Another Ohrworm!! I am stuck in this weird little Zeitgeist called the Coronavirus. Hanging and trying to chill in SW Germany. Trying not to worry about things like you know like existence. This was the first version I ever heard. I always loved it and then the more dance version by Manfred Mann came out and I fell in love with it but, that said, this original version has a more folky feel, more of a story with the connection to the life we live as adolescents, seeking that crest to make our mark upon in some way. Please don't misunderstand, I love dancing to the Manfred Mann revision but this version will always hold a special place in my heart.

This is a solo acoustic version, and not representative of the version on Greetings from Asbury Park.
Love this version, the lyrics actually make sense when he sings it.
I enjoy Bruce's version but I do understand why he let someone else release it, think the tempo is too much for him haha when he's done it recently, he still jokes if he can keep up with it lol
But at the end of the day he wrote it and will preform when the fans want.

One of the best reworked covers of the era. Obviously All Along the Watchtower is another big one... Yes' 10 minute cover of Simon and Garfunkle's America is also an amazing reworking.
i discovered Manns' version at the age of 14 (over 40 years ago)
