    Made me think about an old 5hp motor I had when I first got in to John boat fishing, there great little motors and more power and dependability then people think. Good video!

    The OMC 5.5 is a smooth little powerhouse for its size

    runs nice. I think that is the right cover for the 1960 models, they had the cheesy looking plastic applique, like the 59s much better.

    Do you have to remove to power head when changing the impeller on these motors? I have a 1963 5.5 hp that needs an impeller.

    Nice. was this converted from pressure tank or was it a factory single line..also mixture 50:1 or 25:1? Couldn't tell if this has FNR by the video...wish our salt water motors down here weren't so hard to get apart without breaking a bunch of bolts off.

    More magic!! Nice job. What is your opinion of advancing the spark a little, since we have better gas/octane and better lubes

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the gasoline is worse now days than it once was! I have tried advancing the timing and it doesn't do any good
      You will run a high risk of burning a piston if you over Advance it.

    • @fstarockaburns425
      @fstarockaburns425 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      worse gas means a little advance does help - the lead in the older gas burnt faster.. no more than 4-6 degrees.. motors will only really burn at WOT where max advance is constant... :/

    Do you have to pull the power head to change the impeller in that motor?and about how fast will it push a 12 foot aluminum jon boat with 220 lb man?

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you have to pull the power head to replace the water pump. And if the boat is trimmed correctly around 7-9mph

    Can you give your opinion on my problem?
    Was given a 1960 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 just like the one in your video. Did some minor repairs, replaced spark plugs, cleaned it, new gear oil.
    Starts up, but stalls out when I push the choke in, or if throttle is too low. Opinions?
    Thanks in advance.

      So it's not like a regular motor where the inpeller is In the bottom/foot ?? I have a few questions Ben can u call me 417-988-8494 call or txt anytime thanks

    • @outboardfixer
      @outboardfixer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to take a bolt out under the power head to disconnect shift rod to allow the FOOT to come off, you can't disconnect the shift rod at mid section like older models and newer ones too. The impeller is the same as all of them.....just the shift rod disconnect is a pain.

    Nice and smooth running engine. You put a lot of parts in in and seals, etc. Where can you get them? I just acquired a very nice1960 CD-17 5.5 Johnson and it is missing the High and Low speed knobs. Any idea where I can get? I dont want to start this project without being able to adjust, unless I can do until I get parts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Rick

      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Ashley You can get 90% of the parts from Evinrude, but the knobs might be a little harder to find look on ebay

    Really!!! the person I bought the motor from told me to mix 24:1 to 34 but he didn't seem sure and when I tried 24:1 it was smoking at idle and when it's onload I'm not sure if that is normal :( so I thought about asking ppl that have the same engine and find out what is the right mix and what they use ...

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hassem Aman Well it's depends on the year of the motor, the 1960 has to have 16/1 and the 1961,62,63 use 24/1 and 1964 uses 50/1 it is all about what bearings are in the motor, 1954/ 1960 use bushing's and 1961-1963 use a few roller bearings, and 1964 have full roller bearings. Yes no matter how much oil you use it will smoke.
      You can not damage a motor with too much oil, so give it what it needs and enjoy it for a life time.

    Hey I can never find a dem of pushing 4 adults along with one of these, any comments? considering a cheapo tender dinghy and think a classic old 60s johnny and a good tune up will be a good balance.. Dont care about speed really, more just snorkeling around coves on a calm ocean- will this move us along ok at least?

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hassem Aman Yes i do! 16/1 is the correct mix.

      chrysleroutboarddude I also got 1960 5.5 Johnson and I do 50/1. Sounds safe?

    • @RonMillbrae
      @RonMillbrae 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EKTRBK no. Run 16:1 on all motors under to horsepower until 64 and then you can run all motors except 3's on 50:1. The 3's run on 16:1 still. The 10's below 1964 all run 24:1 and same with all bigger motors below 1964. Only a fully jeweled motor can run 50:1
