“We will not give up what is ours”: Putin discusses Ukraine, “hybrid” war with West

  • President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia would be prepared to talk to Ukraine, the United States, and Europe about the future of Ukraine if they wanted to, but that Moscow would defend its national interests.
Putin, who sent troops into Ukraine in 2022, has repeatedly said he would be prepared to talk about peace, though Western officials say he is waiting for the U.S. presidential election in November before making a genuine effort.
"We will not give up what is ours," Putin told a meeting of the defense leadership in Moscow, adding that Russia did not intend to fight with Europe.
Russia is upgrading its nuclear arsenal and keeping its strategic forces at the highest level of readiness as the West wages a "hybrid war" against it, Putin said.

A whole section between 0:53 and 1:13 was omitted in the subtitles. Putin says: "The leading industrial economies in Europe are in recession. But in the political consciousness of many of the European nations a change is taking place. They see that USA is impudently and mercilessly exploiting Europe for its own interests."
I wonder if it's auto-censorship or just the ancient fear of USA and Britain that Europe will emancipate itself and start playing with "the bad boys" for the interest of their own European nations.

What's really sad is, I know that the probabilities are shifting heavily on a NATO vs RUS war, proxy war or whatever. Of course it would be on European soil. We are all Europeans, Germans, Italians, French and Russians alike. We know what would happen if Europe emancipates from NATO and USA, and as an Italian i'd be happy about it. Our economy was hindered by the Angloamericans since 1920's and if you see it with the right eyes, it's evident that even the German political course of 1933 was an Angloamerican crime

now they also obliged Europe to financial responsibility: the leading economies are in huge loss, they went into recession.
But the changes happen even in terms of political consciousness of Europe. They [eu countries] see that the US boldly and mercilessly exploits EU, while the countries that lost the territories, first of all, Poland, are eager to get them [territories] back.
At this sense, Russia is the only one that could be a warranter of Ukraine's territorial integrity. If they [Ukraine] don't want - alright then, the history will put everything in order, we will not interfere this. But we will not give what belongs to us. That's what everyone has to realise.

Putin having to clarify this was directed to the Western public. What he is saying is not how I understood it. I understood that after the Polish high court delivered its last verdict in the Gazprom case, that Russia implicitly told them they understood that meant the "Poland" wanted to get "repaid" with "Ukraine" and when the high court ruled as it did that means THAT was the "payment" at the cost of over $6 billion that Poland expected. Then Russia discussed its "bypass" strategy and no one objected.
There is also the matter pertaining to 2021 and 2022 being 100 years after the conference on reparations from WWI.
What DID Putin say in the Polish press during for what in the U.S. was known as the 75th Anniversary of D-Day?
It was translated into English by the publication itself if I recall -- it was not in English as submitted to the publication.
It is important because the same matters that were implicitly addressed in the Polish case and explicitly played out in one manner or another in the last two years (including Kazahkstan) are what were discussed at the convention on the reparations due after WWI. At that time the primary concern was Germany. One would have to ask what that entailed for "German capital" that was infused into and through countries other than Germany prior to the onset of the war. That would include the U.S. and Britain, but it would also have included Russia. As for "Poland...?"

Those interested in history can go to Wikipedia and read up on Cuban missile crisis. Two sovereign countries - USSR and Cuba - wanted to put the missiles in Cuba. By then USSR was surrounded by the NATO missiles in Europe.
So, did USA say - “sure, those are sovereign countries and their defense is their own business”? No. Instead, the US said - “this is an existential threat for us, so it won’t happen, and we will start the nuclear world war if this is what it takes to prevent it”. The entire country was on nuclear alert.
So, when the US government tries to tell us now that NATO membership is Ukraine’s internal business - coming from the USA, of all countries, this is laughable. Russia is doing nothing different from what the US would do in a similar situation.

You unfortunately sound quite naive about what is actually going on and how it is to be Russia's neighbour. You have a very idealised view of Russia based on your comment. No different to how many in the west have an idealised view of USA. I do agree with you that fear took over the NATO decision and it is another step towards more tension and that USA doesn't really have an interest to calm those tensions, which is why it is stupid to latch onto them. But again, Russia isn't what you are making them sound like either.

@@rejuvenator8966 true, I don’t live in Finland, but I did live next to it, in St. Petersburg, then left to the West and didn’t look back. I never idealized Russia, in fact, hated its guts when it was USSR. But I did learn European history. The USSR was scared shitless of what happened in WW2, how it overlooked it, how it was unprepared, and how many people it had to sacrifice. Contrary to what the West said a nd keeps saying, the dominating sentiment in USSR and then in Russia was the fear of future wars, it’s security - but not expansion. It is true that whatever territories USSR came in possession of in WW2 counter-offensive, it quickly turned into Socialist satellites, but, again, the dominating sentiment was - let’s have geographical safety buffer from now on. Friendly countries that the future attacks could never be launched from. And I am well aware of some Finnish territories with the Finnish names that became part of USSR and Leningrad suburbs specifically - I do not justify that, but, again, the rationale was to create security buffer to the second largest city in USSR and its cultural capital.
If you look at the decades of post-war history it is clear that the military technology in USSR and Warsaw Pact were shaped for defense, while the same analysis of the US military technologies and NATO strategies shows that their prime goal was always offense.
To summarize - USSR and modern day Russia have never been an ideal country in my view. But this is not what I claim. I’m only saying that expansion is most definitely not their goal and historically has never been. And all the claims that Putin who has deep seated hate of Lenin and the Communist project wants somehow to reinstate the Soviet Empire is sheer nonsense. And, going back to Finland, Russia settled all issues with your country back in 1939, and while Finland has every right to be unhappy with that outcome, I know for a fact that there are no unsettled issues between the two countries today.

    • @rejuvenator8966

@@vadim64841 I stand corrected about you idealizing Russia. And we agree on many things. However I want to respond to this "Russia settled all issues with your country back in 1939, and while Finland has every right to be unhappy with that outcome, I know for a fact that there are no unsettled issues between the two countries today". It is absolutely true that there are no unsettled issues anymore on either side. And whatever hateful and bitter attitudes there had been after the war, those things get washed away through generations and I find nothing else left today except a suspicion that maybe they could do something like this again someday. That suspicion was not really even there anymore before the Ukraine war started, everyone had totally accepted the new reality that we are a different world and different generation now, the old attitudes are not there and there is nothing to start a war over on either side. Obviously an invasion of Ukraine shook this belief of security, thus the Nato popularity turnaround in Finland.
Also you mentioned that USSR settled everything with Finland at the end of war and that was that. However, after the war until the collapse of USSR Finland was not free of Soviet control. It was political influence, it was "unwritten" but it was absolutely there, and today it is called "Finlandisation". Finnish people were very aware that they are not free to speak, write or talk freely about Soviet Union. It is not a coincidence that right after Soviet Union collapsed, Finland was quite fast to join EU, but not before that. It's not that Finnish people didn't feel close to Europe and the West, but the Finnish policy of survival was to "not piss off the neighbour". And now today Ukraine situation (although it is complex) from one angle has similarities with the situation of Finland. Many Ukranians feel close to Europe and west now, they feel they are part of Europe. Just like Finland has moved on from the Soviet mentality, so has Ukraine. And thus many feel they should have the right to make that choice.
