    I have always had a veggie garden since I was a little girl but due to retirement I now have a dinky balcony with afternoon sun only. I am experimenting. I have an Early Girl tomato in 16 gal, and an eggplant, and a Calif Wonder bell pepper in 10 gal containers. They are getting approx 5-6 hours of sun. In 105 degree heat I am hand watering 2x/day. Tomato blossoms are hanging on without being covered but my pepper plant lost blossoms and scorched leaves. Some of my eggplant blossoms dropped. I am now protecting my eggplant and pepper from sun. I've also managed to squeeze in some rosemary, thyme, and chives. You'll never take the gardener out of this girl! 😃

      Take a magnum wine bottle (glass one), place cap/cork on it. 'Drill' the neck into the soil to the fat part of the bottle. Twist a few times, then remove.
      Remove the cap/cork from the bottle, then fill the bottle with water or water + fertilizer (liquid type).
      Quickly shove the bottle into the hole you 'drilled'. Pull in/out slightly a few times to make sure it doesn't get clogged.
      That should give you more even watering. Of course it isn't a lot of water but it can help keep the roots from drying out.
      It automatically waters for you, until it runs out of water.
      You may still have to water in addition to that but the bottle trick can help save the plant from stress.
      Not much you can do about the heat unless you have an A/C blowing cool air on the plant.
      A grow bag sitting in a 4" deep container can help too.
      Grow bags run cooler for the plant due to evaporation.
      Grow bags do use extra water though.
      A trade-off of sorts.

    I'm in south California too. I dread for when summer rolls out with triple 100 days. I'm buying a large shade cloth to cover my tiny balcony where I grow. My balcony faces the south so it gets lots of sunlight. I barely get into gardening about five months ago. It's a satisfying hobby. :)

    I live in Tasmania, Australia and there are never extreme temperatures. It never gets below 40 degrees, and never higher than 86 unless there is a bush fire nearby. So there's never frost and the season can go for longer than in other places.

    This was a great video last year. You inspired me to grow some extra container tomatoes and experiment. I planted Bradley tomatoes in 4 containers late in August. By November, when the season was ending, they had several green tomatoes close to turning red and being ready. I nearly threw out my back bringing them inside and put them in our sunny sunroom with added grow lights. The tomatoes ripened, and we had fresh ones all through January. And, the plants continued to stay alive thanks to careful attention, heavy feeding, and enough light to match Dodger Stadium at night.
    I made my husband put them out just off our patio in March, and they immediately began blooming. We picked some tomatoes in April, and the plants are starting to look more like bushes instead of vines.

    That is so funny, your old shade cloth. You must have taken my bed sheets to heart. My family and friends think I'm crazy until they realize that my idea really works. It really keeps the hot wind from drying out the plants and soil. I saved my Chinese long beans, green beans, cucumbers, Goji Berry plant, even my sunflowers and Amaranth plants. I already picked my tomatoes. So now I'm just waiting for more flowers to bloom.

    What about pruning? I've heard a few things about trimming leaves up to the fruit so the nutrients goes to the fruit and not to leaves that you don't eat.
    I'm growing an indeterminate cherry tomato in a large container on my balcony, I've had to prune off the suckers so it doesn't get too tall. It seems to be doing well, I just don't know if I am pruning it correctly or if I should be pruning it at all.
    My boyfriend and I have a Tiny Tim tomato grow off going on. I have one Outdoors on my balcony in a container, he has one indoors on some grow lamps and a timer he put together from thrift store finds. So far mine is winning! His is a bit leggy, but mine is bushy and already has some fruit.

    I Love your videos. I just started planting in my 2 Tower Gardens this past June when I got them. The Summer was so hot I barely got tomatoes. So many days it was over 100. I live in southern California. So many of the plants did not grow...like peppers....they turned to leather....The tomatoes finally started growingt in November. How do you shade them? What is that material that you put on your plants? I am replanting them again this week. It was so frustrating last year. I had to keep pushing them under my gazebo where my furniture was and then bring them out to spay and then back in again. Everytime I would put them where they belong everything was wilting.
    Thank You ❤

    I am learning that some determinate tomatoes last much longer than I thought! It is almost August and you can still harvest from a determinate tomato. I thought they died off much earlier. Clearly I shall plant some to see if I can get a small harvest before fall. Very informative video!

    • @CaliKim29

      Hi Angela - very true - some have a very long period of growth. My Tiny Tim has been growing for several months, ripe tomatoes here and there, but most of them ripened in the past few weeks. It is a perfect variety to plant for a fall harvest, seed to harvest in about 60 days, which is why it is in my Late Summer Garden Seed Collection along with cucumbers, squash, beans and the cute Thumbelina Zinnias! Let me know how your second wave of veggies grows - thanks for watching!

    Kim we love watching your shows, we are very similar in weather conditions here in southern utah. I was wondering if the reason my tomatoes have been slow to grow and flower is because they have been "protected" from the towering sunflower leaves that shade them? I have have religiously used worm tea, and used compost mixed with potting soil, and my plants are on a regular watering schedule. Any advice would help I am missing fresh tomatoes this year.

      Hi Chad! It can absolutely have an impact on the tomatoes growth. They need 6-8 hours of full sun. I would just trim the leaves that are shading. and you should see a big difference! Keep me posted- thanks for watching!

    where i live in md we've had 15 inches of rain in the past 7 days. some of my larger tomatoes like the lemon boys are splitting. does this mean their gonna rot before they ripen?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jack! Eeesh, that's lot of rain. They might possibly rot on the vine. If they're at all starting to turn color, you may want to harvest and ripen them indoors. A paper sack works well, as in this video, bit.ly/calikimripentomatoespapersack. Acardboard box in between layers of newspaper does the trick too. Good luck, hope the rain lets up!

    Excellent tips. My tomato plants recently just started falling over, how can I get them upright without damaging the roots?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Amir - glad you enjoyed the tips! It's best to install a cage or some kind of support for your tomatoes at time of planting, but if you haven't done this, no worries, it can be done. Here's a video to show you how, bit.ly/calikimtomatosupport. If a few roots get damaged in the process, it should be OK. Tomatoes are pretty resilient and it will be much healthier, more productive off the ground. Good luck, keep me posted!

    I have lots of green tomatoes on my first ever tomato plant-i think the worm tea really helped-i am using a 10 gallon smart pot, and an indeterminate plant. I see now you're recommending fish fertilizer?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations on your first tomato!! Fish fertilizer is simply an additional nitrogen source to give tomatoes a boost when they start- but my routine go to’s are compost or organic matter, Vermisterra worm castings and tea. Keep me posted!

    High 90s, low 100s here in Idaho. Fruit that had set is ripening, but very few new flowers on the veggies, and most of the flowers have fried in the heat. :/ I have a tendency to put too many tomato plants in my containers. Must give them more room next year.

    Hi Kim! I’m in the valley here in Cali. Do you think it’s too late to plant any flower seeds? Zone 9. Thank you!!!😘💜

      @nicholeadams5377 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm zone 9 as well and just started sunflowers, zinnias and cosmos from seed about 1-2 weeks ago. Waiting to transition them into their permanent containers. I will plant the sunflowers in the ground. Everything seems to be doing well. They've all grown their second set of leaves so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I water them twice a day because of this heat. I checked the 90 day forecast two days ago and we won't have anything less than 80's during that time so I think we'll be okay.

      @CaliKim29  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Dezidoll we do have time to plant more flowers being zone 9 and since our first frost date usually isn’t until Nov/Dec. Have fun with it!!

    Thank you!!

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Nisha, he is such great garden dog, even if he won't eat veggies! Yes, Good Dirt is more expensive, but it's well worth the money. It lasts for several plantings and stays loose and fluffy in the process, eliminating the need to replace the potting mix each time I plant and saving me $ in the long run. I've have some containers on my 3rd or 4th planting with the same soil. I just add some compost or worm castings, and put in the new plants, good to go. If you are not able to purchase it, just pick up any brand at your local garden center, or if you have time, make your own, bit.ly/calikimDIYpottingmix. Thanks for watching!

    Kim a couple of questions. First do you ever get the larvae of the soldier fly in your compost? I have a tumbler type composter, small yard, and this is the second year I have gotten the larvae in my compost. Hundreds of them. My worms have disappeared and now just larvae. They look disgusting and I am not sure I want it on my food garden. I know they die or escape somehow but eww. Secondly you always say "inexpensive" in doing gardening tips for us. However I have purchased the worm tea and it is quite spendy. I don't know how you can seriously use it thru out your big garden. Any answers?

      Hi Karen, so sorry hear that! I hope it cools off soon so the tomatoes start ripening and growing. When is your first frost date? Maybe you can plant that second wave of veggies I mentioned in the video. The 7 varieties in my Late Summer Garden Seed Collection grow from seed to harvest in 6-8 weeks, perfect timing for fall harvests. Good luck!

    This is first year I planted tomatoes. I had 25 in smart pots size 5 to 10 gal. Hoping to get some tomatoes. Looked at lots of videos used fish emulsion Epsom salt lime worm casting ect. Trimmed suckered and watered well. However we got high 90 so and then no rain for 4 weeks just when plants were going gang buster and setting blossoms. The plants either had end rot or were size of cherries and tasted terrible. Only 2 types had decedent tomatoes, purple Cherokee and black Krim. Starting to compost plants. Will use larger smart pots next year. Two plants I tossed in flower bed and never watered or fertilized are going tall and green and blossoming. Lol. Til mid June I thought I might have green thumb.

    • @diygardener4556
      @diygardener4556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karen Fiori - Hi! Definitely try larger pots 15 to 20 gallon minimum for most tomato varieties, and make sure they have adequate water. In those temps a drip system is almost necessary to keep the soil adequately moist for the tomatoes continuously increasing water needs. If you dont have a drip systerm, see if a gallon size plastic jug will fit on the soil, in the container by the plant. Even a half gallon container will work if thats all that will fit. Use a safty pin to make a hole in the bottom of the jug. Place the drip for best water distribution, and fill with water and or, a safe daily feed ration. Every time you water your plants, just fill up the jug too, and the slow drip will help keep your plants hydrated and moist longer. Hope that helps!
