    I remember the first time I saw EL Sd45s, had to be 1975/76 along the Montclair line. At the time were probably the largest locos I had ever seen (I was around 12yrs), you could hears them a mile away if they were working upgrade. 40 something years later I'd still occasionally catch NS 1700/1701 lugging grain over the Kittatinny Ridge on the Portland Secondary. Great video, thanks for the memories.

    That was one creepy horn. Sounded like a coyote and a sick goose. That would sound even scarier at night.

    I never knew Cresson had a train bridge that went over, I went on maps and it looks like there's still trackage in use that joins the RJ Corman. Me being born in 2001, and being 20 years old now, I've only seen patched Conrail locos in blue paint. I still miss Conrail to this day.

    Thanks Jack. Dash2 45s, whether tunnel motor or not, just had a certain howl to them.

    Was erie lackawana the only railroad that purchased a shit ton of SD45-2s?

      Total of 136 built. Santa Fe had a ton of them. AT&SF had 90, Clinchfield 18, EL 13, Seaboard 15...

    40 years ago or so these units were on high priority trains rolling across Indiana towards Chicago.. The EL passed not too far from me but i was only 2 when it was folded into Conrail...

    Lotta memories, grew up as a kid along the Pittsburgh line, 1987 - 1993, my earliest train memories were moves of old coal hoppers that still had RDG and PC markings on them. And the old trailer train "front runners" before spline cars came along.

    Wow, such great footage. To think at one point Conrail would have been common... and at one point in the video you had three trains going there! Nice work Jack, always looking forward to your videos in the subscriptions.

    jeez, I used to hike and hunt by those tracks in the first clip. lived by Loretto, PA from 1973 to 1991. In the 70s that line there was busy.

    Thanks for the up-date AmtrakSS. I didn't think CSX was still running them, as I haven't seen one in a loooong time... Thanks for watching...

  • @1jackdk

    I know several guys that work for NS and they see them now and then. My front porch is 23' away from the CSX mainline, and they must have theirs in hidding somewhere. I haven't seen a CSX SD45-2 in years. I do have a few video clips of CSX ones in the collection somewhere on my chanel. Thanks for watching...

    No matter what color of paint they ended up wearing, I will always remember them in Erie Lackawanna colors on the point of high-priority trains like 2nd New York 100!

  • @1jackdk
    @1jackdk  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Michael, I am pretty sure that the NS has 6 SD45-2's in service, but derated to 3000hp. 1700-1705. I don't think CSX has any left on the roster. Not sure about any other roads. There where a lot on the Santa Fe, but pretty sure BNSF has retired all of them...

    Great over & under action there! Did you know that was gonna occur or was it coincidence? I started railfanning Horseshoe Curve in the early 80s but haven't visited Cresson proper yet. I'd like to get up there again when I can. If you're interested-I recently posted a slide show containing some Horseshoe action from the early 80s Conrail days and containing other rarities too. Do you happen to remember the PRR Aero-Train? Photo of it in Altoona in the aforementioned slide show.

  • @AmtrakSilverStar
    @AmtrakSilverStar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are currently no active SD45s on CSX's roster. There is one retired CSX SD45 used as a training tool at the Atlanta REDI center.

    Yes, we know that the coal train add to pass over the mainline, and waited for it. This overpass is now gone, and also MO tower, is long gone. I'll have to check out your Conrail tribute. I was going to do one of my own, as I got 1000's of Conrail slides that I had taken over the years...

    I'm also from Carrolltown and I recognized this as the Syberton crossing of Rt. 53. It's not the Cresson Branch but the Irvona Sub which enters the Main Line at almost the same spot as the Cresson Branch. This line is still active and is used by NS. The Cresson Branch is now owned by RJ Corman although the extension line from Bradley Junction through the Tunnel near Carrolltown was abandoned years ago.

    Excellent video Jack! Just when I thought I've seen all of your Horseshoe Curve area videos. This one turns up on You Tube! I grew up with the Erie Lackawanna. With Denville NJ only being 4 miles from our house in Parsippany. My friend and I would ride our bicycles there before we could drive. And we would see all 3 type's of there SD45s there. Then in 1980 was our first time to the Horseshoe Curve area. And we weren't disappointed. We were thrilled to see Ex EL SD45-2s in helper service! Though they were no longer in EL livery they it was a bit like the old days when these reliable locomotives were used in mainline freight service. And this video most certainly brought back a lot of EL and CONRAIL memories! Thankfully NS still has 5 still in service! And 1700 being repainted in EL livery! And is a Heritage unit!

    Several SD45-2's are still working on both NS and CSX. They were originally Erie-Lackawanna units.

    I have been all over the mapquest maps try to find the exact location with no luck. This was taken 23 years ago, and everything is grown up now, but its a good bet that the tracks are gone. Where ever they loaded at, it appears to have been loaded by a front end loader, and not a tipple. We wheren't to far out of Cresson, as we had no problem getting past him, and shot him again going over the mainline. Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • @1jackdk
    @1jackdk  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think I found the spot on the Google Earth, which means it actually isn't Carrolltown. Let me know what you think. This might have been the crossing of Gallitzin Rd (53) at Syberton as the roads and location looks similar to the video. We shot trains on the main line, so we didn't see this happen, But, maybe the coal train got on the main, passed the helper terminal and then backed around the Y at Gallitzin, then reverse direction again, and passes over the top to head east. What do you think?

      westpoint64 I truly wished you had too! I grew up not far from Denville NJ my friends and I would ride our bicycles there.And Man quite a show of MUs and Push pulls! But most importantly ERIE LACKAWANNA FREIGHTS! ONE COULD SEE 2-3 FRIEGHTS IN AN AFTERNOON! WITH SD45s SDP45s OR SD45-2s WITH EITHER A U33 OR U36C MIXED IN! USUALLY CS-9 WAS THE MOST COMMON TRAIN!
      BUT TODAY ALL YOU SEE THERE IS NS HO2 LOCAL OR THE MORRISTOWN & ERIE C424 #18 OR 19 RETURNING HOME! PLUS A LOT OF NJ TRANSIT ACTIVITY! H
      SIGH.I MISS THE ERIE LACKAWANNA! BUT NS HAS RESTORED #1700 AN SD45-2 INTO ITS EL LIVERY! AND THEY HAVE 4MORE SD45-2S STILL ACTIVE THOUGH IN NS PAINT!
