    Fun fact, the *code* written specifically for Madaline's movement/player input/state of being is about *5,400 lines* .
    Many indie games don't have that many lines in their entirety.

      Well. Say was this coded by one person? Because I honestly don't see any other way *that* could have been made. Even if it was something I'd written myself I'd probably end up spending more time trying to find what I need than actually writing code.
      Just looking through some of the variables there's code for movement, camera, hitboxes, cutscene animation, environmental changes. It's insane.

    Celeste is a clear example that narrative of a game can greatly enhance the experience of the gameplay. While I love Mario there is no denying that its narrative of "save the princess" is now kind of bare and doesnt add much for what you do in the game as a platformer, while in Celeste the narrative of "overcome and improve your self" fits so well with the player overcoming obstacles through mastery of the mechanics and levels.

    • @pervertpenguinproductions2425

      I've never been a fan of these types of comments. Just because one game is great doesn't mean you have to tear another one down just to make your argument look better. Good games are good on their own, not because its compared to another

    • @JettPistol

      @@pervertpenguinproductions2425 Mario has actually much more immersive music and incredibly catchy tunes, especially in the 3D games

    • @pervertpenguinproductions2425
      @pervertpenguinproductions2425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JettPistol Yeah but in Celeste the music represents something, it's nice to listen to sure but as you progress through the game the music is an integral part. Not only does it make the death heavy gameplay more bearable but it moulds the feelings of the player so that we can empathise with Madeline and her battle with depression, anxiety and her struggle up the mountain. In Mario it's more like " wow this is a sand level so it has funky desert music ." I would probably say that Mario music is overall better as Celeste is just an indie game and Mario is well Mario but I still stick with my original comment.

    I think what I enjoyed most about Celeste was the area of the game where they bring back all of the mechanics but with an additional power in the mix. I won't spoil what it is but that entire sequence feels incredible, putting all your skills to the test by taking the unique elements of previous levels and ramping them up even further. Of course the B and C sides do this as well but that level in the story was really where the game shined for me. I really felt like I had accomplished the goal Madeline set out to do.

    • @NyanMango
      @NyanMango 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Afrohawk It really does. That level is my favourite "final-exam" type level of all time, followed closly by the completely unrelated Rhythm Heaven Fever's final level. Don't know if I'll ever be able to finish the C-side though. I haven't been able to finish the mirror-temple C-side yet.

    I'd strongly recommend N++ if you're into unique 2D platformers. Most people remember N, the freeware flash game, and N+ from Xbox Arcade, but N++ is basically the refined, perfected version of the previous games. Instead of the typical movement you're used to with classic platformers, the game has unique physics to it where you accelerate and use your momentum to platform. People generally label the game as having "floaty" platforming, but it works in the games favour, and learning how to use it to your advantage is what the game is all about.
    Between the minimalist style of the visuals, the music and sound design, and the perfect controls, playing through the game just feels great. The difficulty goes from blatantly simple, to probably the toughest platforming challenges in video game history. But considering how fair the controls are, it's hard to blame the game for your mistakes. It's like pure platforming zen. The game doesn't get nearly enough attention than it deserves.
    (Also on the note of discussing thing Celeste does well, that evil clone tangent applies perfectly to N++ as well. There's an enemy called Evil Ninjas similar the the evil Rayman/Mario cosmic clone thing, but the way they're used in different levels becomes more and more of an obstacle and requires careful planning.)
    tl;dr: is great game. play. :) store.steampowered.com/app/230270/N_NPLUSPLUS/

On the contrary, I'd like you to remain the dude you actually are, don't force yourself to be otherwise. Also, there is a ludicrous amount of videos in American English on the internet, so listening to another accent is overwhelmingly refreshing; that accent is not missed... at all. I work on becoming a game developer and what I want to focus on is programming and the aesthetic. What you described is what I have been saying for years. Take a concept, but build on it and change it or use it in more fun ways. Tf2 did this when Quake had rocket jumping and Tf2 expanded on this by making it much more fun and a core part of the class's ability.
    But then Overwatch did it backwards. Instead of Celeste improving on Rayman's mechanic it's instead was Rayman degrading Celeste's mechanic. They made Pharah launch with a button and just float in the air or shoot down. Tf2 added this later with the parachute but the core is still there to maneuver and Overwatch just dumbed it down for kiddies in a sense.
    I would rather take an element like meelee and improving that for fps.
    Press meelee then either left or right mosue to attack or block, duck to swipe kick or jump while ducking to knock them up in the air.
    The enemy can block with their weapon, if they block they simply gets knocked back a little and take damage but if they don't then they get either knocked down or stunned a little.
    This means that range must keep a distance while meelee isn't about hitting them enough before they start shooting and makes meelee a viable option in a shooter along with more free movement, I actually managed to take the wall jumping from Shane Beck's tutorial and implement it well into my fps script.
    I want to see more variety and creative use of abilities and mechanics to add on to a game. Like when sequels take the old, but add more and improve the old like Red Alert 2 adding new units and upgrading the old by making them unique for each faction

  • @royalninja2823
    @royalninja2823 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Y'know, I think a lot of what you said about the Badeline levels can apply to the evil ninjas in N++. A few levels are typical chase scenes with only one or two, but a lot of them have you go through an endless number of them while trying to hit switches and navigate mines and such.

    I'd agree with you except for the white block.
    I love SMB3 and grew up with it, but nobody today is going to figure that out without a guide or background mario knowledge and the fact that it's required in order to unlock the final B-Side and all the C-sides is absolutely appalling.
    I love Celeste as a game, story and experience but the cryptic blue hearts were retarded. Good easter eggs, great mind-bending out-of-the-box puzzles that play with the mechanics of the game, but locking legit great platform challenges behind cryptic shit is stupid and I don't support it.

    • @Aceedius
      @Aceedius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah I can see that. Since I also grew up with SMB3 this one in particular registered as a cute surprise, I enter this room and it's almost like I'm greeted by an old friend. But since it's a very binary case of either you get the reference or there's nothing to help you, it'd feel kinda shitty to be in the latter category.
      The puzzle-based blue hearts weren't great in general, tbh. Chapter 1 stumped me for 20 minutes before I gave up, and I later came back after talking to a friend who told me one of the things I'd already tried (in fact, the very first thing) was the correct solution. So clearly I had made a mistake in executing that solution, but since the game doesn't respond to anything but the exact correct input, I had no way to identify the mistake or reason to suspect that was any less wrong than all the other ideas I tossed at the wall. Chapter 6 exacerbated this problem by obscuring the symbol representing the last sequence. I stumbled into that one by testing an interpretation of the visible symbols that later turned out to be wrong, which only reinforced an incorrect idea of how the puzzle worked, and the room proceeded to suck all joy out of me until I caved and looked up the answer.
      Yeah, you can look up a walkthrough to skip all of these and get to the good stuff they're hiding, and if you're already indifferent to cryptic puzzles it's not a big deal. But if you're someone who generally likes figuring out this kind of thing, exhausting yourself and giving up because the puzzle is poorly designed feels like a really condescending gut punch (ironic given the game's encouraging attitude). And even disregarding the UX angle, if the response to a game design gripe is "you can just look up how to bypass it", that is sort of admitting the element is bad.
      & just to pre-empt a common form of response (not directed at anyone already in this thread but I see this happen all the time): I LOVE Celeste, it's my fav. game of 2018 so far. Explaining in detail why I didn't like one part does not equal to hating the whole. OK and thanks.

    The platforms that either appear or disappear after jumping/dashing are also borrowed from mario. I'm not sure where they orriginated, but i saw them first in 3d land.

    I recently really wanted to replay Celeste but before I started, I learned Mario is actually a cited inspiration for the devs, so just for fun I decided to play Mario 3 before replaying Celeste and one thing I realized from that experience is that the boss fight with Mr Oshiro is probably inspired by the angry Sun from Mario 3! The Sun in Mario 3’s whole thing was that you had to run in a level constantly worried of getting suddenly attacked and constantly had to decide whether you should keep going or wait for an attack so you could have a few seconds of level uninterrupted, Mr Oshiro’s chase is exactly that pumped up to 11!

    The bubbles you enter that shoot you out in different directions are definitely inspired from Kirby, and absolutely does them better in a platforming sense, whereas in Kirby they just functioned like cannons pretty much and shot you from one place to the next, Celeste has you launch out with the need to make split-second decisions right after, as well as choosing the firing direction

      I like games that are actually fun to play and move around and i doubt that monster hunter world will be an enjoyable experience for me. It looks good but not the kind of game for me :3

    I know this video is a year old, but I wanted to mention that N++ does something very similar with the idea of clones following your movements. Because N++ creates non linear environments like Celeste, the idea of an obstacle course created by you is also present in that game.

    I love how Badeline laughs when she kills you. Speaking of which, I don't think she actually kills you. I think when your fears and anxiety (Badeline) catch up with you, you give up, thus ending the game. That's why you have to keep moving, not dwelling on the same thoughts and ground or you'll give up. Just my little interpretation of it anyway, dunno if anyone agrees.

    That white block in Celeste was a dick. I had never played the original Mario game nor even heard of the secret, and you have to crouch on it for longer than any interaction with anything else. Needless to say, I had no idea how to get that heart until I asked someone else.
