Coins play a better role in this game than they have in any of the 3D Marios either way. They're more plentiful than past games, but that's offset by the value of items you'll be buying with them. Yes a Moon is 100 coins but until you beat the game there's only one of these available per level and the only other thing you're buying with coins a temporary 3 extra hit points or costumes.
I honestly really think a good 100% reward would be the ability to use any capture anywhere you want. You've already done everything, so nothing can be broken.
Ultragamer FanFic Readings I really wish that they did something like that with sunshine. Imagine getting infinite water or a super nozzle that combines the others nozzle's abilities. Imagine Mario flying in the air at mach speeds with the ability to shoot water blasts.
"Mario is the epitomy of joy, the very definition of fun" James, you nailed it with that description, Mario has been part of my life since always, i can't remember any moment of my youth without Mario being part of it, be it on the snes when i was smol, or on the 3ds in my teenage years, or in the Switch now that i'm 23. Thank you for giving words to what i always felt.
I love how flattered peach looks in the last cutscene when bowser takes out the piranha plant bouquete like "Oh wow this frequent kidnapper of mine wants to marry me how charming." Jokes aside, I love how they show that peach honestly does have some emotion for bowser, even though it's probably out of pity.
The only thing i don't like about Mario Odyssey is how two of the worlds are basically just boss arenas with very few moons sprinkled around. Especially the ruined kingdom, it had so much potential as a medieval/gothic themed world yet it's basically just one area.

You ever die with zero coins? It's this really unsettling feeling, a few seconds in the silent darkness. It almost feels like you're dead longer then if you did have coins.
Spoilers about something on the last kingdom. Press read more if you want to carry on I was so shocked and happy when I heard you talk about the lyrics in the moon kingdom since it turns out that the song is on about a player and the game, it makes me so happy to be apart of this wonderful series. I started playing Mario when I was 5 or 6 on the DS and I have been a Mario fan ever since so hearing it these lyrics just brightened up the day which is the same for all every NitroRad video :D
JaaakMilk i honestly just gushed up at that moment and hearing mario thank us was just about to make me cry cuz I got into gaming because of this series and it reminded me of all the fun times I have ever had with this series which made me understand alot more why I deeply love Mario and gaming in general. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
Anarchy The Cynic Ikr. The series is so magical with the history of it and every game is so fantastic. These lyrics are so clever and I really think that if the series ever had to finish or something, I think that this game would be the end mainly because of the lyrics of the moon kingdom song and the fact about Mario and Bowser realising that they are after the same goal
@@roslynnerentas8939 Aw no way, Banjo Tooie is great, definitely harder than the first one but it’s a different type of platformer to Odyssey, I loved how the worlds would connect and it’s distinctive Banjo/Kazooie charm.
I really liked Mario Odyssey felt like Mario platforming, mixed with Sonic the Heaghog's fantastic music, mixed with Banjo's transformations along with not kicking you out of a level. I love how relaxed and chill this game is too very easy for anyone to pick up and play.
“Never really found the ground pound jump that useful” man dude one of the most satisfying move combos to pull off starts with the ground pound jump. If you use one near a wall you can wall jump and dive to gain huge height. This is best used if there’s not room to triple jump because of how little room it requires to pull off
I never actually thought of the punk song in that way. That actually made me kind of emotional. Brilliant analysis, dude. I think I still prefer the Galaxy games, but Odyssey would probably take the number 3 spot for me. Either that or Sunshine, but in Sunshine's case, that'd be a nostalgia vote. Odyssey is definitely the pinnacle of the collect-a-thon Mario style so far.
jesus fuck you're so stupid. videogames never started nor end in a realistic manner. you might aswell delete your account if you want me to delete my comment.
I love how you never feel like you are straying from the story. You are constantly travelling to areas that bowser plans to take prized items for the wedding, so no kingdom feels like a pointless pit stop.

You forgot to mention the best part about collecting the purple coins: using them to buy a kingdom's souveniers. I always went for the stickers and collectibles the moment I gathered some. Buying them and decorating your ship with them to then as the game progresses seeing them altogether truly made the game feel like an odyssey around the world.
Remember in 2013 when they were trying to sell 3D World, they called it the "grand culmination of past 3D Mario games" It's 2018 now and I have to laugh.
Albert The Peacock It's a great game, don't get me wrong. But in no way should Nintendo have ever tried to pass it off as being in the same vein as the 3D Mario games before it.
It's basically if 2D Mario was converted to 3D. Very NSMB-ish with a lot of the old Mario tropes. Aside from being a 3D game it has almost nothing in common with the other 3D Mario games. Goes hand in hand with 3D Land.
Thanks for this marathon dude, I really appreciate all the hard work you put in your videos and always excited to see a new video from one of my new favorite creators. Keep rocking.
The one thing that I really like about SMO is how connected the world feels. Most Mario games have their NPCs only exist in their set levels, but in SMO, the characters can be found throughout the Kingdoms! I was amazed at seeing all of the different characters at Bowser's wedding and then seeing different inhabitants in different kingdoms, like the New Donk City guys in the Luncheon Kingdom or the Mermaid on the Moon. It really gives a sense of a believable, connected world that you explore in your playthrough of SMO.
Thanks so much for those spoiler warnings! I was thinking I shouldn't be watching this video but I can't miss your awesome Mario videos so I watched it anyway. But nope you let me not spoil myself. Thanks dude!
I know! I wanna play it so bad but I'm unfortunately waiting for one of those rare nintendo price drops to buy a switch. Unless it turns out to be a good year for tax returns lol
People keep saying that another up-and-coming youtuber I subscribe to is the Jontron of our generation, in that case, you're the Somecallmejohnny. You share his laid-back attitude and manage to be funny while focusing on achually reviewing the game! Love your work man!
Nitro Rad It's true ! I'm flattered by your response. Happy 10th anniversary to John! I only discovered him two years ago, how long had you been watching him?
This is the first time I cry to a review because of how exciting you talked about this game. It's just amazing the way you explain your connection with games and see what your process of thought is within each and one of your reviews. Been watching your videos for a while but this is the first time I watch this one. It really made me connect with what playing videogames is all about for me. The old times and new fun times merging together and bringing you an experience only games can do. Thanks for all the great work!
That's the sad thing about this game. It's pretty easy, honestly. With all the advanced movement and cool tricks Mario can pull off, the game never challenges you and presents obstacles that require those advanced skills.
@@nayuki-rn and that's bad? I honestly think that it's not that big a deal, the main story is completable without knowing advanced techniques, which is in line with Mario in general. The Mario series isn't one made for advanced challenges, but light hearted fun. The challenge comes from trying to use those moves to your advantage. You *could* capture a Pokio here, but what if you don't and instead wall jump and use the Cappy dive to get up there? Or maybe take a shortcut with some well placed jumps and dives. Long jump there and reach the place you're supposed to get to by a pipe. Compare Super Metroid, which I've been playing recently. I've had to shinespark a few times, and that is a more advanced thing. You even have to know that you can "jump" with the bombs, because you need to know that so you can get the Spring Ball ability which allows to you actually jump in the morph ball form. I only recently started playing Metroid at all, Super being what sparked my interest, but from what I've played it seems to be the more challenging Nintendo IP.
Your bit about the emotional connection to the game made me feel better about literally having tears in my eyes as I knocked down those four pillars and completed the game. It's about more than just great games, it's about our childhoods. I grew up in a house with the N64 and Gamecube, and I ended up buying the Wii, Wii U, and Switch. My grandma had some cool toy guns me and my brother would play with, but most of the time, we were playing Super Mario World on her SNES, a game that reminds me of the times spent with my grandfather. I remember playing 2-player with him when my brother couldn't, or battling each other in Tetris Attack. I remember my whole family playing Mario Kart and Mario Party games for hours, me and my older brother figuring out secrets in Mario 64 and Sunshine, and all the good times that wouldn't have happened without Nintendo. The ending of this game somehow encapsulates all those feelings, and I guess the fact that the song is addressing me, the player, only really registered on a subconscious level. I don't cry often, but that ending had a tear rolling down my smiling face. I know It's not a perfect game, but I've nearly 100%'d it, and I don't regret a second I've spent playing it. (Fuck the 100 volley challenge, that's the one moon I'm missing)
Thankyou so much for reviewing all of these. It's funny when you said that you've liked Mario longer than you've liked anything...same. I've been a fan of Mario since as far back as my memory goes. Since before I was allowed to hold a controller, I used to watch the cartoon and watch my parents play the old NES Marios. This series means more to me than any other.
I honestly really like Mario as a character, it upsets me that Everytime a Luigi's Mansion comes out everyone's like "Mario is a big mean jerk" I don't get it
Mario always puts himself in danger helps anyone he meets without asking for credit I don't get why people say he's mean or evil, Mario is a sweetheart and a pure hero at heart
I honestly don't know how it did it, but Odyssey actually was the game that made me finally fall in love with Mario I grew up playing Sonic games and _really_ fell for the Mario/Sonic rivalry as a 10 year old on the internet, and I just ended up always disliking Mario, even when I played a Mario game I'd just pick a different character to avoid him But after I heard that fuckin song, Jump up Super star, and it cheered me up while I was in the middle of moving, somehow I just decided "Fuck it, it comes out on my birthday, let's get a Switch and Odyssey" and god damn, with the controls and how expressive Mario is, _I get it now._ I finally realized that Mario games were about more than powerups and jumping, and compared to stuff like 64, or Super Mario World, or New SMB, I was finally able to see Mario as a person I could sympathize with!
Yeah I feel like Boo Mario didn't fully tap into the potential that playing as a ghost character could have. I'd love to see them return to this idea and expand on it by capturing Boos in the future.
Your analysis of the endgame of Odyssey at 27:00 is sublime. About them being cartoon characters and their relationships/goals. Especially when you talk about the meaning of the lyrics to the Honeylune Ridge song. Brilliant video of one of my favourite Nintendo games my man!
This might be the best and fairest review I have seen of odyssey so far. Really excellent and fair analysis, with a touch of charm that makes watching so much easier and more enjoyable. Great job on this, hope to see more videos like this soon! :)
Thank you so much for making this marathon! The 3D Mario games are genuinely some of my favorite games of all time, and I have a huge amount of nostalgia for 64 and Galaxy, and watching these videos helped me remember a lot of my favorite aspects of some of these games, and I can’t thank you enough for that! Watching this video, I realized how much of a masterpiece this game really is, and I think I can put this above Galaxy 2 now! This really can be regarded as the best Mario game, even one of the best games of all time. Your videos have brought me a ton of entertainment, and I’ve re watched them daily, and I’m going to say again, thank you so freaking much for this marathon!
Although I completely agree with the song theory you said, I always saw Peach turning them both down not as she didn't love Mario; more like she didn't want to be competed over. She was overwhelmed, probably tired, and just wanted to go home. And can you blame her? Going into lore, Mario's objective was to save her because he cared, not necessarily just because he was in love with her. That was Bowser's thing, with less consent. Honestly, the scene reminds me of my favorite line from Aladdin (paraphrasing here): "I am a person, not some prize to be won."
I really wish I could feel this joy that everyone has for this game; I loved the idea of returning to the 64 and Sunshine design philosophy but no idea in Odyssey gets to exist on it's own. By that I mean that there isnt a single moon that isn't gotten 15-30 times in the same exact way across all worlds. I think this has the best movement and game feel but the level design rarely puts your mastery of mario's movement to the test. The marathon on Darker Side made me say "finally, you want to actually challenge me" but by that point all thats left is finding moons just lying around (how on earth are so many of the moon cube moons easier than the "regular" ones?) Or buying hundreds of them from the store. Anyway, sorry about the essay, excellent video as always and I'm glad that you loved this game so much.
Dude, I gotta be honest. When I played Odyssey and got to the ending bit, when that song cued up I was getting teary and I think I even full-on wept in joy during all that. And now, when I'm watching this video, I get to the point where you're explaining that it's a love song from the game to the player and all those emotions came rushing back. You made me cry, James. I probably needed a good cry anyway because I haven't in a while, so thank you for being the push for that. :,)
Dude it's crazy how similar our taste in video games are. Mario is also the thing I've liked the longest in life, and this game and sunshine are my two favorite 3d mario games.
Y'know If Pauline ever does appear for Smash Bros 5 then It truly make my day. If not, then let hope she can still play other major roles then just Odyssey cause I'm curious what else there gonan do with her unlike the Mario Vs. Donkey Series.
I just finished watching all your 3D Mario reviews. I am definitely subscribing; you have a critical eye that balances negativity and positivity perfectly.
I honestly love how you talked about the ending to Odyssey. It never really hit me till you pointed it out. I wanted to bust out in tears of joy. You're a great guy and a great TH-camr! You're content is amazing, and I hope to stick around for more videos in the future!
This is by far, the most entertaining and best review of Mario Odyssey I've seen on TH-cam. Nitro... you're something else! haha you pulled my heart strings talking about those lyrics about the player and game connection. I didn't think of it that way and glad you brought it to light cuz it makes this game that much more special for me :)
I also think that Mario Odyssey is the best Mario game. But Super Mario Sunshine is definitely my favorite Mario game, I don't know if it's nostalgia or something else, but I just love it, and I play it twice every year.
Super Mario Odyssey is easily my favorite in the franchise, and I've been with it since the Super Mario Bros. on the NES. It's just... You stated it very well. It's a love letter from Nintendo to Mario fans - to gamers in general. Now, I do have one, *tiny* criticism of your review. You said that ground-pound jumps aren't useful, and I'd like to introduce you to Super Mario Odyssey speedruns. It is one of the most used techniques in the fastest runs. (That nitpick is literally it.) Regardless, I'm in the same boat as you stated at the end. I've liked Mario longer than anything else - not including family. I've liked Mario longer than my favorite franchise - The Legend of Zelda. I've liked Mario longer than I've liked my favorite genre - RPG. Mario was my introduction to video games with Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt, and, really, to see it expressed in both a culmination of history and a promise of future games is...like the game - breathtaking. (Small Edit...) Also, I thought you were going to cry when describing the relationship between Mario and the player, and I was about to cheer, clap, and go "YES!" because... So true. So good!
37:34 AH I'm so glad you think that as well! i actually had a feeling you would mention how cool it would be to have isle delfino as a level, and it's super satisfying to hear you say that :p
Sonic 2006 had no self-awareness about it, and expected us to simply accept it. Mario Odyssey, on the other hand, I can't help but feel the dissonance was the point, and they're even presented in their own group. Odyssey had at least a bit more self-awareness about the whole thing.
Tbh I dont have a problem with 06 humans either, although I might just be used it by now lol. Eggman still looks super weird in that game tho Anyway, on the topic of Sonic, I wish they would bring back the Unleashed style humans. They worked so well and Sonic didn't look pit of place next to them. I just love Unleashed in general haha
The cherry on the cake for me would be if all enemies you captured had a flashback cutscene like you did the frog and bowser. That would be absolutely amazing
The last area, the one that introduces chargin' chucks, is such an amazing idea. I remember thinking "welp okie time for the challenge gauntlet where you just use all the powers you got throughout-- UM DRY BONES????? UM BANAZI BILL??? UM CHARGIN CHUCKS?????" the fact that they LITERALLY introduced 3 new captures in just that section made it so much more intense than it had any right to be. Its like they knew what people were expecting but didn't want to conform. But i think that summarizes the entire game.
IM ACTUALLY STRAIGHT UP GETTIN EMOTIONAL ABOUT YOUR EXPLANATION OF BOWSER AND MARIO ON THE MOON. I NEVER SAW IT LIKE THAT IM GONNA CRY OVER A FRICKIN MARIO GAME????
I'm not even a huge Mario fan and this video made my cry, your enthusiasm is just so contagious dude. And Odyssey was amazing, definitely brought me back in when the last game I cared about was 64. Also I noticed your Hotel Dusk poster in the background and I love it.
The groundpound jump was my favorite, because it's a high jump, which you can do without needing to move Mario. I use it all the time. When I'm on a small platform or something.
The realization that you've liked Mario games longer than anything else in the world seemed very genuine and was a beautiful thing to watch. Thanks for taking the time to do such an amazing review of such an amazing series :)
Man this has been a journey! I never thought I’d sit down to watch a 40 minute review of Mario Odyssey, but you justify it quite easily. There’s a lot to go through with this game. Great series, dude. You’ve made easily one of my favourite review runs on TH-cam with these, I mean I thought I knew these games in and out, but I’m still learning new stuff thanks to these vids. Truly definitive stuff, well done!
I remember not enjoying Odyssey that much on release, and I've by and large been having more fun with 64 and Sunshine in 3D All Stars over the past few weeks. But the sheer excitement on display in this video makes me wonder if I was too hard on Odyssey. Your enthusiasm here really rubs off!
I definitely agree with your control criticisms. It made playing this game /hell/ due to the fact that I developed arthritis fairly young and the pro-controller equivalent to the motion control moves just isn't as consistent or good. It's something Nintendo fixed in their later games for the console once the gimmick outstayed it's welcome but I haven't gone back to Odyssey since beating it because of that and it's a shame. (BoTW's tilting shrine puzzles were also a special brand of hell on my wrists but at least that game was smart and made the motion controls mostly optional.)
I mean I like Odyssey a lot, but I’ve always preferred the more linear and concise level structure of Galaxy and 3D World/Land when compared to 64 or Sunshine. Mainly because I like a well designed level in which the devs can focus on an idea and only that idea without having to worry about it conflicting with the rest of the world they created. It’s also because it’s nice to just jump in and play a random set of levels to a clear end instead of simply running around in a sand box. I mean I grew up with Sonic Adventure 1&2 so it’s probably because I enjoy that type of 3D level design which has an end and encourages exploration as well as faster speed. I like a good mix, but I can also understand the appeal of the more sandbox style of games. I just never feel the desire to ever go back to them since I don’t know what to do really. For example if I chose a level in 3D World I would just go and complete the level. In 64 on the other hand I would jump into a level and decide for myself what I want to do instead of having a clear end goal. I mean it’s probably because I have a big library of games now that I feel that way, I still enjoy those types of games though don’t get me wrong but it’s just not what I’m after. As a kid I’m sure I would have loved sandbox styled games, I mean I used to play Sunshine a lot and I enjoyed that but when Galaxy came out I never really had the urge to play Sunshine again until years later, can’t say the same for SA1&2 mainly 2B though. Nowadays I can enjoy both of them but I think I’ll always lean towards the more linear styled games over the sandbox style. But Bowser’s Fury has given me hope that Nintendo will find a nice happy medium, that seems to be what they’re looking into based off of Bowser’s Fury, and I am excited to see what they come up with. Stay happy, stay healthy, and most importantly stay safe!
Absolutely loved this Mario Marathon you did here. I see myself coming back to these videos a few years down the line and watching all of these again. Great stuff and personally my favourite videos you have made. Keep it going dude, I'll be here to support ya!
I'm glad I'm not the only one getting happy waterworks over this game. Honestly I feel you there with the nostalgia; even though I wasn't born until the late 90's, I grew up playing the NES and SNES, and I've pretty much been a fan of Mario as long as I've been playing video games. This game is one of three that has actually managed to make me cry, but just frm the pure, unmatched joy and charm this game has. Oh and nostalgia. _Lots and lots of nostalgia._

I was so shocked and happy when I heard you talk about the lyrics in the moon kingdom since it turns out that the song is on about a player and the game, it makes me so happy to be apart of this wonderful series.

Mario Odyssey is the Banjo Threeie we didn't know we had
Mario Odyssey is gorgeous and a wonderful game, a joy to play! Having said that I need a new Banjo game, that would be awesome!
@BurningFlamesofDivineDragon i love sonic the heaghog

I hope bowser gets his own dedicated 3D platformer.

I love how you never feel like you are straying from the story. You are constantly travelling to areas that bowser plans to take prized items for the wedding, so no kingdom feels like a pointless pit stop.
Well, except for when you get shot down, but that's understandable.

Remember in 2013 when they were trying to sell 3D World, they called it the "grand culmination of past 3D Mario games"
It's 2018 now and I have to laugh.
MarioFanatic64 3D World is still good and much more challenging than Odyssey
Albert The Peacock It's a great game, don't get me wrong.
But in no way should Nintendo have ever tried to pass it off as being in the same vein as the 3D Mario games before it.
It's basically if 2D Mario was converted to 3D. Very NSMB-ish with a lot of the old Mario tropes. Aside from being a 3D game it has almost nothing in common with the other 3D Mario games. Goes hand in hand with 3D Land.
3D World is my favorite.
3D world was a great video game but the worst mario game
I NEVER NOTICED THE MARIO 3 RUNNING THING HOLY COWWWW
Thanks for this marathon dude, I really appreciate all the hard work you put in your videos and always excited to see a new video from one of my new favorite creators. Keep rocking.
He's one of a kind!
This game is legitimately a masterpiece.
This is a game where you can immediately tell the devs went all out on almost everything.
Not a Masterpiece.
A piece of Master.

I honestly don't know how it did it, but Odyssey actually was the game that made me finally fall in love with Mario
I grew up playing Sonic games and _really_ fell for the Mario/Sonic rivalry as a 10 year old on the internet, and I just ended up always disliking Mario, even when I played a Mario game I'd just pick a different character to avoid him
But after I heard that fuckin song, Jump up Super star, and it cheered me up while I was in the middle of moving, somehow I just decided "Fuck it, it comes out on my birthday, let's get a Switch and Odyssey" and god damn, with the controls and how expressive Mario is, _I get it now._ I finally realized that Mario games were about more than powerups and jumping, and compared to stuff like 64, or Super Mario World, or New SMB, I was finally able to see Mario as a person I could sympathize with!
Good on you, man! Sincerely hope Forces didn't disappoint. (It didn't for me btw)
They had a boo with a Mario hat and mustache in Galaxy, it would’ve been nice to have a ghost house area
Yeah I feel like Boo Mario didn't fully tap into the potential that playing as a ghost character could have. I'd love to see them return to this idea and expand on it by capturing Boos in the future.
Legendary Llama That wouldn't make sense tho, how can you posses another ghost?
Luigis Mansion level
Yeah. Its important to remember that mario doesn’t just save peach throughout his adventures, he saves anybody who’s in trouble.
27:00 everyone keeps coming back for that part. The way you build up the story in your review is sensational
I wished Nintendo wasn't that expensive in my country 😭😭I totally missed all the series, but I could see all these high quality reviews thanks to you
Dude it's crazy how similar our taste in video games are. Mario is also the thing I've liked the longest in life, and this game and sunshine are my two favorite 3d mario games.
I still don't have a Switch myself, but I still have my eyes on getting one.
And now that the N. Sane Trilogy is coming to Switch, I am beyond sold.
Really?
Both jump up super star and the finale theme made me really emotional too
all those childhood memories just came flowing back
Y'know If Pauline ever does appear for Smash Bros 5 then It truly make my day. If not, then let hope she can still play other major roles then just Odyssey cause I'm curious what else there gonan do with her unlike the Mario Vs. Donkey Series.
Joey Margolian well she makes an appearance but not as a fighter

Word of the day: Malarky
It really annoyed me that your hat changes back to the default Mario hat when you possess something, I know it would've been alot of work but still
Super Mario Odyssey is easily my favorite in the franchise, and I've been with it since the Super Mario Bros.
(That nitpick is literally it.)
Regardless, I'm in the same boat as you stated at the end.
(Small Edit...)
Also, I thought you were going to cry when describing the relationship between Mario and the player, and I was about to cheer, clap, and go "YES!" because... So true. So good!
37:34 AH I'm so glad you think that as well! i actually had a feeling you would mention how cool it would be to have isle delfino as a level, and it's super satisfying to hear you say that :p
07:55 That scream sums up my feelings about that blasted mini race(?) on the scooter segment. It was such a pain!
People complain about human beings looking a bit off for a Mario game?
Sonic 06: Hold my beer!
I think you meant that the other way around...
Eggman still looks super weird in that game tho
Anyway, on the topic of Sonic, I wish they would bring back the Unleashed style humans. They worked so well and Sonic didn't look pit of place next to them. I just love Unleashed in general haha
The cherry on the cake for me would be if all enemies you captured had a flashback cutscene like you did the frog and bowser. That would be absolutely amazing
Personally, I love how the characters from each kingdom visit all the other kingdom's in the postgame.
Balloon world was a genius decision. With the beautiful movement and tightly designed levels, and all the crazy stuff you can do. Awesome

The groundpound jump was my favorite, because it's a high jump, which you can do without needing to move Mario. I use it all the time. When I'm on a small platform or something.

I feel like I went on an emotional journey with this review. After the review was over I just wanted to give you a standing ovation
Was Nitro Rad reviewing all the 3D Mario games in order just for this video

The spin jump is useful, but in an obscure way. You can spin jump, the ground pound during the spin, then roll. This gives you INSANE speeds.
