FCC vs HCP stacking example

- Metals are made up of close-packed structures. Consider a hexagonal close-packed layer. You can add atoms on the next layers up. Where you choose to start these layers determines whether you form FCC face-centered cubic or HCP hexagonal close-packed crystal structures. In this demonstration we show you ABA stacking vs ABC packing and visualize the cubic crystal structure with tennis balls.
this is the greatest explanation of this I've ever gotten
@@BenFowlkes-y6b right? That moment when you finally see it
Man, this channel is gold, no one else has this kind of energy and passion for explaining this stuff in a easy to understand way. Thank you
This is probably the best demonstration of the topic.. I’m a class 12 student and this really helped me understand the topic.. thank you so much!!!
Woohoooo
Thanks for putting so much effort to show us illustration... Greatly appreciated
My pleasure
Iv been searchig for this from last 2hours ,trying to undertand how is CCP same as fcc.
ur explanation was the best.
thanks alot.
Heck ya! So glad to help.
0:02 I've been literally scratching my head trying to understand the similarity between hcp adn fcc although my book didn't suggest so. Finally after coming back home this is a relief and definetly a good night sleep!
Thanks for vid, really grateful
Right? So fun to see it click
literally the best visualitsation ever. thanks
Woohoo! So glad to help.
@@TaylorSparks Thank you so much! Best video of crystals
wow!
nice illustration, Taylor! it sparks!!
Thanks!
Ohhh DANG! You were soo good at that man.... Thanks a lot
Crystal clear now!
Thank you! The diagrmas and animations I have seen didn't explain it nearly as well!
super awesome! best visualization ever!
Right? This never made sense to me until I actually made the model myself
@@TaylorSparks Yes! I am a PhD student and have to regularly work with close packed structures. We have marbles in our lab that we can place on a square or a hexagonal surface. but these tennis balls have a better visualization
i needed exactly this video , thanks mr. taylor
I'm so glad you found it!
the last few seconds comes a aha moment for me, when u switched the green ball to demo both structures. Thank you so much. I wonder why they cut up HCP lattice straight up but cut up FCC lattice sideways...
so that the unit cell becomes predictable,
A unit cell must repeat itself in all directions but if they cut it like the hcp, there will be no regular pattern to the unit cell
you could argue that we can make the unit cell of 6 storeys so that it repeats that would instead make it more cumbersome to study
At last! Someone used those balls! I didn't have that many balls and I was searching on the internet high and low that I should stumble upon some video that would visualise the thing with balls.
Lol. Internet always delivers
Wow that makes so much more sense👍👌
Right!? So simple when you can see a physical model.
Real really well made, thank you, i have a question
Question what happens at 1:40 when you place dark green at truangular voids pointing "down"? Thanks again!
the same cubic close packing comes ,cuz where you place the second layer does not matter.both ccp and hcp depends on the placement of the third layer
Thank u sir u really cleared my confusion...
Amazing! Now it seems obvious after watching this.
Thanks mate,you saved me.
I definitely recommend this for the people confused with the imagination part short but yet concise and clear, for all those searching the visualisation/difference between hexagonal closed packing and cubic close packing, here is ur solution
🤘
thanks for this nice illustration
Wow that was very nice
Thank you so much sir
Wow! For such a passion...
Really thanks a lot....now my all doubt are cleared only bcz of u.....
Woohoooo! Super glad to help
Nobody can explain better best
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks man this was really helpful
wow beautiful!
It's so counter-intuitive that you have two choices for an optimal packing
Very easy visualisation op!,!!!
Amazed 👏 all cleared
....
this is such a great video
thanks a lot
Amazing....
Awesome 👏
Pretty slick right??
Could you do the same thing but showing a dislocation please?
Good idea!
could you kindly go into the past and replace my material science professors? thanks
Hahaha. I will do my best. The time machine is probably going to require some new materials development.
@@TaylorSparks get cracking then
🤣
Wooooh❤
Right?? Fun to see it click
You gotta have the balls to do this
@@harshsoni794 lol
killer
this is a big oooooh moment
Right!? So cool to finally see it.
like this vid
damnnn i can see the fcc now
Right!?! For years people said that it was just a matter of stacking and I could never quite see it and then when I built the model myself and colored in the corners all the sudden I could see it pretty clearly.
woahhhhhh
voice too low
Yeah, I don't know what the deal was with this video. It's usually much better on my other ones
